  • This video details how I used the existing Savage Worlds rules set to be able to play in the world of Athas, or to use in your own desert of desolation sci fantasy wasteland!

    Back in the land of the Commentariat! This is great! Being a product of the 90s, I think you're exactly on point about how extreme and how metal it was. I sometimes think Mork Borg in a way is like a darker cousin to games like Dark Sun. I remember reading the novels voraciously too. This is great stuff. I felt like it would be lame to ask for a copy without first saying how awesome it is to see this mashup! I would suggest that the concept exploded repeatedly and blew the other stuff I was interested in off the table. And there's no soaking that!
    Now I think I need to go listen to some Pantera and Dinosaur Jr to get in the headspace!

      lol. Sending the file your way sir! Thanks for making BBB on your list of stops after being placed in the Big Brother time out corner for a minute. I enjoyed making this, so after it has been out in the wild for a bit I may do a monster list/encounter table, with the appropriate existing Savage Worlds monsters.

    Nice! I've really come to enjoy Darksun as a setting and Savage Worlds seems perfect for matching the tone. It even has Savage right in the title. That being said I will probably run my first trip to Athas in D&D 4e more because I have been feeling nostalgic for 4e and want to try out some house rules for the system.

      I had one of my favorite gaming groups during 4E. Went from level 1 to 20. I don’t have a lot of positive vibes for the system, but the group it gave me was priceless! I think Savage Worlds more elegantly handles Psionics, defiling, balancing wildly different capability races, and generally sword and sandals gaming. That said, I’d give my right big toe to have a group that would play a proper 2e game of Dark Sun consistently! Until that happens though, Savage Worlds is probably the best fit!

    One of my favorite settings and still need to pick up the conversion for Shadowdark. I like what you you created.

      I have that one, and while I liked it, I didn’t like some of the solutions… I also felt that the system was close enough to D&D I would probably just play the real thing at that point… it was that realization that helped me decide to convert for Savage Worlds.

    This looks really well done. Dark Sun was my main setting in the 90s and up until they remade the boxed set, I had literally every book and supplement TSR produced, even the novels.
    That said, considering I have it all on pdf, I have a hard time trying to re-do the setting. I figure why go through the difficulty of tweaking everything, when I can still just play the original? Don’t get me wrong, all the reworks I’ve seen have looked awesome.

      Totally understand that take, and appreciate the kind words as well. At least in my area, finding a group to play AD&D is tougher than finding one to play Savage Worlds. So, by doing the conversion, I can expose players to Athas that otherwise would miss out.

    My favorite D&D setting, followed by Ravenloft. No other D&D setting comes close

    I never got to play Dark Sun bitd, but I had the rules and was a fan of its non-standard concept and design. And of course the art. Brom went on to dominate the scene for a while there. I tried to read some of the novels, however, and was deeply disappointed in them. TSR's fiction was hit-or-miss at best.

      Stig, did you try the Prism Pentad or the later books? I really enjoyed the Pentad. It was kind of a Spartacus meets Lovecraft thing.

      @@booksbricksandboards783 Well, actually, the Pentad's the one I meant. I read all 5 books, didn't like one. ymmv, I guess. I don't like avocados either...

    Why Savage World vs other systems such as Cypher? Just curious...

    • @booksbricksandboards783
      @booksbricksandboards783  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually have done some content on Cypher. I have ran it and read most of the official releases through “Claim the Sky”. My issue with Cypher is mainly two things. 1) the results are pretty heavily abstracted, which leads to a a lot more variation between what two people see the same result as narratively. 2) to me it always feels the same. Whatever genre or setting, the mechanical system gives it the same feel. It’s not bad, I just found one I like much better.

      @@booksbricksandboards783 I've run a couple of Numenéra campaigns and fell in love with it. Then I convinced of the GMs in my main group to try it and we'll try his post-apocalyptic-modern-fantasy (Shadowrun meets Dark Sun). And I'm prepping to run a Ptolus campaign for two different groups.
