Funny thing is, many modern viewers have trouble imagining Keanu Reaves as anything other than Neo or John Wick. But before the Matrix, most people had trouble seeing Keanu as anything other than Ted.
Yes! I remember in the 90's when Keanu started branching out into other genres, people were saying, "That stoner kid from Bill and Ted?" It was such a weird shift seeing him become a romantic lead, he was such a convincing "dude".
The back of the “The Matrix” box even just said “whoa-Keanu Reeves” as a selling point😆True, he says it in the Matrix as well, but it was clearly a reference, especially to what you mentioned 🙂
Unless you seen movies like River's Edge, Permanent Record and The Prince of Pennsylvania. Although, they're not far off from Ted. Ted just in a different scenario. lol
I love how these guys are the physical embodiment if absolute positivity. Also, I think it's funny that despite them supposedly being dumb, they have really great vocabulary, with words like Triumphant, Bogus and Heinous.
There's a truck in my city out here in California that has a huge "BE EXCELLENT" decal on the back window, with the silhouette of Bill and Ted each on the outer side of the text, lmao. Always loved seeing that around town these days. It's such a fun vibe and reference.
Adding to the excellence of this film, Jane Wiedlin of The Go Go's plays Joan of Arc, and The Three Most Important People in the World are played by Martha Davis of The Motels, Fee Waybill of The Tubes, and in the center, legendary saxophonist Clarence Clemons of The E-street Band.

What attracted Napoleon to Waterloo, the water park, was that it's also the name of a city in France and the location of the Battle of Waterloo (where Napoleon lost, by the way).
Fun fact abou that Circle K, it was filmed in Phoenix, AZ where I live and it just closed down not too long ago. It was on the news that the film Bill and Ted was filmed and encouraged fans of the movie to visit the location one last time before it was demolised.
Two things: 1. At no point does Rufus ever tell them his name, they only get it from themselves. This is referred to in temporal concepts as the bootstrap paradox, where information is shared between individuals via time travel with the knowledge only being known because someone who knew it introduced it in the past so they’d learn it later. 2. Bill and Ted basically, during the rescue, weaponize the idea of the predestination concept, in essence proving they cannot lose because they have already succeeded and were able to go back and help to begin with.
Bill and Ted telling each other information is the bootstrap paradox, but the naming of Rufus is actually an ontological paradox, because the information has no discernible original source. In contrast, the information “you guys are going to have a most excellent adventure through time” is not an ontological paradox because it is directly experienced by Bill and Ted. As another example, Marty McFly getting his parents together is a bootstrap paradox, while the song “Johnny B. Goode” is an ontological paradox, since Marty didn’t invent it, he learned it from Chuck Berry, but Chuck Berry didn’t invent it, he learned it (over the phone) from Marty.
Also a nice touch of foreshadowing hinting at the bootstrap paradox was at the beginning when they talk about the catch-22 of getting Eddie Van Halen in the band.
It can get even freakier. In Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann, he has a pendant that has been in his family for generations. It's said that his great, great grandmother stole it from his great, great grandfather. At the end of the movie, the woman he fell in love with snatches it from him before he's taken back to the present, making him his own ancestor. Not only that, but where did the pendant come from originally?
The great thing about time travel is that, since it isn't actually possible, you can do whatevr you want. Most people agonize about justifying every detail, but this movie just doesn't care, and does what serves the story. Bill and Ted accept the idea implicitly and make no effort to blend in anywhere they go, cheerfully assuming that it's all cool. It's genius, and a great palate cleanser when you get too serious about science fiction and/or movies. 😄
@@Serai3 I once read short story about time travel. A scientist creates a small, prototype time machine, which he demonstrates to his friends. He sends it a few minutes into the future and it works perfectly. He then says that in five minutes, he'll send it back in time five minutes, and right on cue the time machine appears. His friend asks, now that the machine has already appeared, what would happen if he decided NOT to send it back. The scientist thinks this is an interesting question and decides to find out. This causes the entire universe to blink out of existence. :)
Ah the 80s. When Billy the Kid can shoot a gun in the mall and in a school and it doesn't make the news, jokes about sleeping with you're friend's mom, And where parents are the villians!!! Ex-ce-llent!
Lol. For us, Ted going on to do Dracula and Point Break and Speed and the Matrix and John Wick was the wild ride. Alex Winter fell away from acting after a while and went into directing and producing, particularly theater, which was one of his passions. For reprising Bill in the third film, he said he hadn't acted in so long that he actually took, I believe, some acting lessons in order to get back into it.
The center future guy was played by Clarence Clemons, the sax player from the E Street Band (of Bruce Springsteen fame) and for Aretha Franklin on some songs.
The Candy Gram joke was a reference to a classic Saturday Night Live sketch from the very first season. It was the Land Shark sketches starring Chevy Chase as the Land Shark who got people to open their doors by claiming to be a Candy Gram.

Great reaction both, took me right back to near when I left school. Fun fact, when Rufus plays guitar at the end, it was actually none other than Eddie Van Halen.
The change in acting styles by Keanu was because he didn’t want to be typed cast as a Ted style. He was often casted as this type in person in other roles. Doing Point Break was what got him out of this typed casting.
@@mblackwl Those reviews were accurate. He did a good job, but it was very ‘traditional stage with Ted’s cadence’ compared to all the other actors in the film. (Stacked cast!)
You guys gotta do all three. They're all just good, silly fun. And the third is especially impressive considering it came 30 years after the second. 🤘🏼
Several years ago I was on a business trip in southern CA and happened to drive through San Dimas. The first thing that went through my head when I realized where I was - "San Dimas High School football rules!!!"
As a kid, my parents took my brother and I to watch Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure and the burbs the night they came out, February 17, 1989. It was a good night.
I have loved Bill and Ted Excellent Adventure since I was a kid. And it really is a movie you can just sit down and watch anytime you find it on. In my 8rd grade school year. We watched it in the beginning of the school year because they wanted to remind us to “Be Excellent to either other”
You have to watch part 2! And I would recommend both Waynes World movies aswell, I loved them as a teenager and they were a big influence for my love of amateur video making! Watching them now is basically like watching the prototype of a youtuber.. additionally to humor that was way ahead of its time and an awesome soundtrack!
I actually saw a bunch of George Carlin's comedy shows from my dad's collection before I ever saw this movie, and out of everything, I was most excited to see him in the movie. What makes this movie so great is that it knows what it is, and it leans into the fun and goofiness of it without overdoing it or taking itself too seriously. Tons of fun to watch. If you can, I'd recommend watching the other two. I think this one is the best, but they were all very entertaining.
funny thing... the time machine was going to be a van...but with the success of the De Lorean as the time machine in Back To The Future, they didn't want to be compared... so they turned to the "phone booth"... yeah... you said it... Dr Who...
This came out when I was fifteen or sixteen so I'm a bit biased, but this is one of the greatest comedies in Cinematic History. And having the greatest comedian of all-time didn't hurt, either.
Not sure if anyone mentioned this but the joke of Napoleon going to the water park is that it's called "Waterloo", which also happens to be the name of the battle where he suffered his greatest defeat! 😄
I'm from san dimas, there is no mall, there is a waterpark, but the one in the movie is actually in arizona. they did film the circle k shot there, but that circle k has been torn down and moved since then.
Genghis Khan is played by legendary stuntman and martial artist Al Leong. he was in a TON of films and tv shows through out the 80s and 90's. always playing a henchman. He was in Die Hard, Lethal Weapon 1, My Science Project, They live, and many more. His role here is actually one of the few roles where he didn't die. lol
Hey, Schmitts! This is a classic comedy that has aged well and even spawned a reunion sequel 30 years later! Napoleon goes to Waterloo Water Park because the name was familiar. Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, Belgium in 1815 by the Duke of Wellington. Beethoven was the composer who went deaf. He was eventually forced to "hear" his own music by pressing his ear to the piano to feel the vibrations. Sigmund Freud holding the corn dog is meant to be a phallic joke but sometimes a corn dog is just a corn dog. The 1,000,000 BC launch which startled the cavemen and their discovery of gum was meant to sort of parody the monolith sequence in "2001: A Space Odyssey". An Oedipus Complex is when one desires intimate relations with one's own mother. The name is derived from the Sophocles tragedy. The "princesses" were probably just noble ladies-in-waiting, not historical figures. They're played by a different pair in each film of the trilogy. Saxophonist Clarence Clemons of the E-Street Band was the central leader in the future sequence. The phone booth is a riff on Doctor Who despite the screenwriters denying it to avoid legal repercussions. Brilliant stroke of luck if their claim is true. The sequel, "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey", is not very good but features a hysterical performance by William Sadler as the Grim Reaper by way of Ingmar Bergman! He's worth the price of admission! The trilogy caps off with a surprisingly well-done reunion film made thirty years later called "Bill and Ted Face the Music"! The duo returns as do Ted's cop dad, Missy and Death all played by the same actors. The plot is clever and the pair finally achieve their destiny. How do these knuckleheads usher in a Pax Humanitas? Well, you've just got to see it!
Keanu has played so many different roles in so many different genres. He did a ton of 80s teen TV stuff from music videos to Dinsey, but he's done a surprising amount of drama which is just about even with his action roles, like 45%Action/adventure, 45%Drama/romance, 10% other whacky/zaney stuff. I basically grew up watching his movies right along side all the other big names in hollywood, since 4th grade. Another great adventure type movie of his you probably haven't seen is Johnny Mnemonic; a cyberpunk style thriller. Enjoy!
The craziest thing about this movie to me is that several of their traveling companions would be killed in one way or another probably not that long after they got back. Joan of Arc, Socrates, Billy the Kid and Lincoln. Most horrifically Joan of Arc would be burned alive at the stake a few years later. I wonder if they considered doing anything with that in the film or if they figured that would be too much of a downer lol.
What I love about this trilogy is that Bill and Ted are just good guys. There's no cynicism whatsoever. And that's really refreshing. I'd call it the "Ted Lasso effect".
When you guys come up to one of my favorite movies of all time that I have watched countless times since being a kid, it's this weird mixture of sadness and excitement. Needless to say, I love your reactions!
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey is my favourite movie of all time. You ABSOLUTELY have to watch that one too. It's SO ridiculous and funny. It makes this one seem serious by comparison.
I can't believe this movie was shelved for two years (filmed in '87) before its release. They didn't think much of it apprently. Movie execs...pfttt! One of the funniest movies ever! 😂
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are also in a crazy comedy called "Freaked', that also has a bunch of famous actors, mostly in bit roles. I believe the whole movie is on TH-cam somewhere.
This will sound silly, but it almost makes me sad that Billy and Socrates has to part ways. They clearly became such fast friends, I would absolutely watch the spin off, “The Adventures of Socrates and Billy the Kid.”
At 14:52, you're thinking of King Henry the Eighth (1500's). He had six wives - two were divorced, two were beheaded, one died of natural causes and the other outlived him.
If you watch Parenthood, there is a lot of Ted in Keanu's character. When you watch this again, notice all of the gestural sexual innuendos Sigmund Freud makes. The two people who served Napoleon ice cream were the writers.
There are 2 sequels or follow up movies to “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey”, “Bill and Ted Face The Music” but I don’t know if the sequels were as well received as the original movie in the “Bill and Ted” trilogy. The guy staring opposite of Keanu Reeves as the other half of wild Stallions is Alex winter. Great reaction. Continue to love and enjoy your movie reactions TBR and Samantha.
For those of us who grew up with us, it was jarring to see Keanu Reeves in roles like the Matrix, Point Break, and Dracula. To us, we always hear "Woah!" when we see him.
The waterpark was filmed at an amusement place in Mesa Arizona outside Phoenix. We used to go mini-golfing there a lot. Good times. Not sure if it's still open. That entire metroplex has changed vastly since I graduated and left there in the mid-90s.
I don't know if it's mentioned elsewhere in the comments or on the full reaction on patreon, but one of the best jokes that you may have missed is in the food court scene. When Billy and Socrates are talking to the two girls and Sigmund Freud butts in, notice his corn dog, and what happens to it when the girls mock him.
You guys look like you really enjoyed this. It's such a fun film. You do have to watch it a few times before you catch all the little historical references. Like when they're talking about where Napoleon is and they determined it must be Waterloo which of course is reference to the Battle of Waterloo....Napoleon against the Duke of Wellington which eventually led to the fall of Napoleon control over Europe. Most of these went over my head when I was a teenager when this film came out. It's a fun way for people to learn a little bit about history. The other two are fun films as well. I hope you watch them as well.
The second one if one of my all time favs. I highly suggest watching them kinda close to each other cause they are all linked and you don't want to forget some of the characters.
1 of my all time favorite comedy series. Bogus Journey is probably my favorite. Definitely do all 3 movies. You'll love them all. Also Wayne's World 1 & 2
Just got the notification 12 hours ago and was thinking oh heck yes, I'll watch your reaction. Alex Winter was the little vampire in the Lost Boys, that's where I know him best. This is one of Keanu's best performances. I do suggest you react to Bogus Journey and haven't seen Face The Music which the only spoiler from the trailer I noticed is that they both have daughters from the princesses. Their music is critical to society in the future. Nice reaction guys and so happy that you finally saw this iconic film.
Glad you saw this now, this is iconic and one of my all time favorite movies. You definitely gotta see the other 2. Keanu and Alex play off each other so well as Bill and Ted
I figured you guys would like it, and happy you did! 😁 Keanu was probably one of my first celebrity crushes, from this movie lmao. Every time I revisit this movie, I notice a new ridiculous and hilarious historical “reference.” Fun reaction!
Well, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter already reprised their roles in face the music. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey are also still around. It could still happen!
Fun Fact: The Ataris have a song titled ‘San Dimas High School Football Rules’ on their excellent album ‘Blue Skies, Broken Hearts…..Next 12 Exits’. They also have song titled ‘So Long Astoria’ which featured on the album of the same name. The titles allude to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure & The Goonies respectively.
So awesome to see you guys enjoying movies that I grew up with. The best part is that there are so many more movies and shows for you guys to enjoy. The second Bill and Ted’s is good but not nearly as good as this one. Keep enjoying, and I’ll keep watching you guys and reliving part of my youth.
Fully agree, I've been thoroughly enjoying these two since lockdown over here in New Zealand. I love revisiting my youth and the movies that meant a lot to me, through the eyes of this great couple!
It was so much fun seeing this again and also seeing a real young Keanu Reeves,it's almost hard to believe that he is John Wick and Constantine.Well done you two.Regards from N.Z.
Saw this in the theater when I was a kid and LOVED IT! I recently saw the first two John Wick movies and had to laugh when I thought of him in this role! The first thing I ever saw him in. Most of my friends think it's blasphemous that I haven't seen all The Matrix movies.
Keanu Reeves uses a quasi Ted character in the movie Parenthood. Which is star studded and great. Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Dianne Weist, Jason Robards, Mary Steenburgen, Tom Hulce, a super young Joaquin Phoenix, Martha Plimpton.
If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you knew Keanu Reeves from Bill and Ted goofball FIRST, and then he became more serious later on. Only people that grew up more 90s, 2000s and later have the reverse view of Keanu Reeves when they first see Bill and Ted. When I saw Keanu in Speed in 1994, it was hard to take him seriously in a grown up action hero role, because I knew him watching Bill and Ted in elementary school in the 80s.
Great reaction! Bit of trivia: The scene at the end where Rufus is jamming with them . . . the actual playing (the hands you see) are actually Eddie Van Halen. 🙂
Did you notice the similarities between the police station scene and the first Matrix movie? When he reads the fax that says “p.s. duck!” And they duck? Same here thing the opening scenes of the Matrix. 😊

You guys should watch Parenthood. It was an ensemble cast with Keanu Reeves, Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, and a very young Joaquin Phoenix
Space Camp with a young Joaquin Phoenix is better.
@@jkhooverThat is a great movie, but I still think Parenthood is better. Screw it, they should watch both.
One of my favorite comedians
funny thing... the time machine was going to be a van...but with the success of the De Lorean as the time machine in Back To The Future, they didn't want to be compared... so they turned to the "phone booth"... yeah... you said it...
0:58 had me in absolute stitches! Replayed that so many times. Such contagious laughter haha
Genghis Khan is played by legendary stuntman and martial artist Al Leong. he was in a TON of films and tv shows through out the 80s and 90's. always playing a henchman. He was in Die Hard, Lethal Weapon 1, My Science Project, They live, and many more. His role here is actually one of the few roles where he didn't die. lol
Would love to see you two go on a Bill and Ted (2&3) / Wayne's World (1&2) binge!
"I'm glad they're going into the time period and not getting the people from the time period into their time".😄
Keanu has played so many different roles in so many different genres. Enjoy!
I recall a very early drama, called "The River's Edge".
Great review, most of us that grew up with this still have a hard time seeing Keanu in his serious roles even though he does a great job.
Excellent! I love this movie. It's goofy but charming. How can you not love these guys?
Agree they are so likable
Handsome idiots with expansive vocabularies and good hearts. Excellent himbos.
Congratulations on your baby! 💕❤💕
I seen this in the theater back in the 80's and it was Awesome!!!
Me and all my friends couldn't wait to see part 2 !!!
"Station"
I can't believe this movie was shelved for two years (filmed in '87) before its release. They didn't think much of it apprently. Movie execs...pfttt! One of the funniest movies ever! 😂
Great reaction from a great couple, to a whimsically great move... Be excellent to each other and PARTY ON!!!
A most excellent reaction guys. This is definitely one of my favorite comedies.🤘🎸
At 14:52, you're thinking of King Henry the Eighth (1500's). He had six wives - two were divorced, two were beheaded, one died of natural causes and the other outlived him.
Be excellent to each other. Great words to live by. And party on dudes! 😂
Bogus Journey is widely considered to be better than Excellent Adventure.
For those of us who grew up with us, it was jarring to see Keanu Reeves in roles like the Matrix, Point Break, and Dracula. To us, we always hear "Woah!" when we see him.
Or Youngblood
Point Break is a good go between for Keanu. Utah isn't that far off from Ted.
The waterpark was filmed at an amusement place in Mesa Arizona outside Phoenix. We used to go mini-golfing there a lot. Good times. Not sure if it's still open. That entire metroplex has changed vastly since I graduated and left there in the mid-90s.
Really? There was actually a huge water park in San Dimas called Raging Waters. Guess they couldn't get the rights?
I am so glad, that I'm not so old, where people still remembers "phone booth"
I don't know if it's mentioned elsewhere in the comments or on the full reaction on patreon, but one of the best jokes that you may have missed is in the food court scene. When Billy and Socrates are talking to the two girls and Sigmund Freud butts in, notice his corn dog, and what happens to it when the girls mock him.
I believe Keanu's first film role was in Youngblood, a hockey movie starring Rob Low and Patrick Swayze, he was the goalie on their team.
A most excellent movie. Be great if they reacted to it. Haven't seen it in forever.
You are correct. They needed an actor who could play hockey
Sigmund Freud holding a corn dog is one of the greatest sight gags I have ever seen. 😆
The second one if one of my all time favs. I highly suggest watching them kinda close to each other cause they are all linked and you don't want to forget some of the characters.
1 of my all time favorite comedy series. Bogus Journey is probably my favorite. Definitely do all 3 movies. You'll love them all. Also Wayne's World 1 & 2
Carlin is a hero of mine, but who cares
@@howardb.6205 I cared about George Carlin; R.I.P. to that Comedy Legend!
Yeah, Bogus Journey is my favorite too.
There's also a cartoon...
William Sadler as death…😂🤣👌
Every time I revisit this movie, I notice a new ridiculous and hilarious historical “reference.” Fun reaction!
when he reached out for Joan of Arc's hand... he looked so hot!
Omg I was 18 when this came out. I loved it then and I still love it now.
This is definitely the best of the three IMO, Wayne's world is pretty funny too
“Napoleon is going to be so sick from eating that much ice cream”. Never thought I’d hear that one.
This is the first role I saw Keanu Reaves in.. he'll always be Ted to me.
I would have LOVED to see a Wayne's World/Bill & Ted Crossover. Those four guys would have been the best of friends had they met.
Pretty much the Mt Rushmore of stoners who weren't stoners.
Keanu was stopping bank robbers and keeping busses from blowing up at that time. The timing never would have worked.
The second one was just as good, if not better, than the first. The problem is it’s so different and surreal that it’s hard to even compare them.
@@danieljohnson2005 *Don't compare them. It's just a continuation of their life story.*
Disagree, Bogus Journey is much better, but that doesn't take anything away from Excellent Adventure though..
@@hulkhatepunybanner I'm just hoping they watch and review and react to it. It is a good movie.
It was so much fun seeing this again and also seeing a real young Keanu Reeves,it's almost hard to believe that he is John Wick and Constantine.Well done you two.Regards from N.Z.
Fun fact, Eddie van Halen does appear in the movie as the hands of Rufus for his solo.
Wayne’s World is another all-time great with a great sequel. You two will love it.
Yes please
Saw this in the theater when I was a kid and LOVED IT! I recently saw the first two John Wick movies and had to laugh when I thought of him in this role! The first thing I ever saw him in. Most of my friends think it's blasphemous that I haven't seen all The Matrix movies.
I’d recommend you see the first Matrix movie and skip the rest
@@mrhomes204 I started it a couple times but couldn't get into it.
RIP, Eddie Van Halen.
He never got the chance to play with Wyld Stallyns
Keanu Reeves uses a quasi Ted character in the movie Parenthood. Which is star studded and great. Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Dianne Weist, Jason Robards, Mary Steenburgen, Tom Hulce, a super young Joaquin Phoenix, Martha Plimpton.
Bogus Journey (the second movie) is my favourite in the series. I hope you continue to party on!
A great friendship on display. A fun movie. Very silly but fun.
This movie taught me the word "egregious". What a special gift.
I literally did a spit take when I saw the thumbnail. Crazy to think there's people who've never seen the movie!
Why is that crazy exactly? The movie came out in 1989, it is now 2023, many people were not even born yet when this came out.
@@JohnGraves1985 That does not make any sense.
Are you trying to say that nobody watches movies that came out before they were born?
I saw a meme once that said John Wick was from the timeline where Ted went to the military academy. Mind blowing.
The names they give Missy are so funny. Dave Beeth Oven, So-Crates Johnson, Bob Ghengis Khan... and Abraham Lincoln
