This is exactly what I was looking for. I was listening to Flatt and Scruggs Cumberland Gap and Earl does that and I didn’t know what it’s called but I love it and now I know it’s a “rake”. Thanks Jim, pleasure as always.
Doesn't matter how much my brothers and kin tells me im learning to play the banjo to late in life, sense ive been letting mr.jim teach me i have learned alot thanks to the one who said your never to old to learn how to play the banjo in so many words..us people up here in the mountains of KY, play music on weekends although i play the guitar i honestly believe that the banjo is one of the most interesting instruments of all times..so!! With the help of mr. Jims help and the grace of God I want to learn
Hi Jim I am a complete beginner and just discovered your beginner banjo lessons a few weeks ago. Yeah I am hooked on your videos and the banjo and am in the process of learning Cripple Creek with the aid of your videos. Your playing is amazing Thanks for posting the videos. PS If you are doing requests. I would love to hear you playing In the Jailhouse now, cheers.
That's a great lesson (enhancement) for C.G., and the timing is important to be smooth, esp. the timing just after the "rake". There are other tunes that we can use the rake...I'll have to experiment. Thanks, Jim, for the tutorials...I eat'em up!
Also, the rake or brush can be used as part of your ending a tune or song. I've used it once in a while, but no too often, as it gets repetitious and you want to avoid that, IMO. Thanks for the suggestion to use in Cumberland Gap, Jim. I sure like your videos...keep-em coming!
I’ve really noticed considered it. I figure once a person has some vocabulary under their fingers that tune should be fairly easy to figure out. It’s not a beginner tune, for sure.
Great alternative to spice up an old time favourite, when I'm playing it I normally turn it about with Katey Hill, have you any suggestions to change Katey Hill up a bit, Davy
Jim see you have tabs available for use. I would like to purchase this material but I don’t know how to read them. Any recommendation on a way to learn this?
Oh Hell Yeah, thanks for another video Jim.
You bet
thank you for sharing, it helps "spice up" songs already known!
That’s the plan. 😊
Thanks Jim. I was just messing around with Cumberland Gap yesterday. Guess I’ve got more to play with today.
Love the outtake!
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Man Jim I really love your videos. Great way to add a bunch of licks to my catalogue. And your attitude is great as well. Puts a smile on my face
Glad I can make you smile 😃
Every time I watch or re-watch you I learn something new. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and letting me teach you!

Thanks for sharing , Jim!
Glad to do it!
Master Jim has gone full hippie! Great lesson, too
Covid hair. 😜
Thanks for all you do Jim I really enjoy learning from you.
Thanks for letting me teach you ☺️
Thanks Jim for this expansion pack...i was learning Cumberland Gap this morning...
Good timing! 😃
Excellent ( as usual) thanks Jimbo
Thanks 😊

Awesome Jim!!!
Thanks 😊
Good job teaching this!
Thanks 😊
Thanks Jim I am trying to develop my own version of Cumberland Gap and love the rake and cutting the E note short which is subtle but super nice
Glad I could help!
Jim, been a long time since I had interest in picking up a “rake”. That’s cool enough to get me interested for sure !!
Best rake ever 😀
I like this rake/slide/pinch combo. I use a rake in cripple creek in place of one of the 2-5 slides. It helps break up the repetition.
Excellent! Yup, I've done that before too. :)
Thank you, will give this a try. Finding it difficult where to put it on whoa mule whoa so hopefully this will help. Hope you’re staying safe and well
You’ll get it 😃
Thanks, Jimbo
You’re welcome ☺️
..awe Jim, that was a little quick for me,...but I can stop and watch again and again. Thats great!
Pause, restart, use the slowdown feature
Thanks jim
You’re welcome 😊
@@JimPankey Yell man
I haven't learnt the song so back to the original video thanks
You’ll have it in no time. 😊
Dude you rock thanks brother
Thanks for watching 😊
Hey Jim. I like to use the rake on the high part of Cripple Creek
That'll work!
..I think I like this idea of a surprise rake!
I mean, who wouldn’t want a surprise rake??

Yup, I use it for an ending variation too. 😀
Thank you for your videos. You are very talented and don't ever change.
Thanks ☺️
I just started working on getting this and Reno’s version up to speed last night.
Would love to hear you play!

I changed how I wear my picks since this video.
Excellent
Thanks 😊
Think you could do a Silver Eagle video? You played it in a livestream but I can’t find it! You rock!
I’ve really noticed considered it. I figure once a person has some vocabulary under their fingers that tune should be fairly easy to figure out. It’s not a beginner tune, for sure.
Love it 👌👌

Don’t really play Katy Hill often enough to offer much help on it, but I’ll ponder on it.
How do you do a rake in cripple creek
I never do a rake in Cripple Creek
Flatt and scruggs did it in the foggy mountain banjo album
@ethanowings yup, it’s pretty much the same rake I do here in Cumberland gap. I just never do it in Cripple Creek.
Thanks for the info
I need to get Paisley back out and figure out how to plant my fingers with this stupid deformed pinky. I miss pickin’. Got any suggestions?
Can always just plant the ring finger.
@@JimPankey I tried that for an unsuccessful bit and couldn’t seem to keep it down. I guess some stretching and practice might help.
Hi Jim
Are picks a must-have?
Wear your picks. :)
@@JimPankey ok
Jim see you have tabs available for use. I would like to purchase this material but I don’t know how to read them. Any recommendation on a way to learn this?
There are a lot of resources on reading tab online.
@@JimPankey thank you. I will look into that tomorrow after work.
Good'n!
Thanks
Cumberland Gap had a low part and a high part. I always thought it would be more nice if more was added
Idk. Maybe a stupid comment on my behalf.😭
I have a Cumberland Gap video... this one is just an added lick
Awesome Jim!
Thanks ☺️
