This is exactly what I was looking for. I was listening to Flatt and Scruggs Cumberland Gap and Earl does that and I didn’t know what it’s called but I love it and now I know it’s a “rake”. Thanks Jim, pleasure as always.

Hi Jim I am a complete beginner and just discovered your beginner banjo lessons a few weeks ago. Yeah I am hooked on your videos and the banjo and am in the process of learning Cripple Creek with the aid of your videos. Your playing is amazing Thanks for posting the videos. That's a great lesson (enhancement) for C.G., and the timing is important to be smooth, esp. the timing just after the "rake". There are other tunes that we can use the rake...I'll have to experiment. Thanks, Jim, for the tutorials...I eat'em up!

I like this rake/slide/pinch combo. I use a rake in cripple creek in place of one of the 2-5 slides. It helps break up the repetition.

Also, the rake or brush can be used as part of your ending a tune or song. I've used it once in a while, but no too often, as it gets repetitious and you want to avoid that, IMO. Thanks for the suggestion to use in Cumberland Gap, Jim. I sure like your videos...keep-em coming!

    • @JimPankey

I’ve really noticed considered it. I figure once a person has some vocabulary under their fingers that tune should be fairly easy to figure out. It’s not a beginner tune, for sure.
