Just made this. WOW. I have a slight phobia of seafood and I freaking loved this. The brown sugar and shrimp blended together mind bendingly well. I topped it off with fried onions for extra punch.

I can vouch for this recipe.... It's delicious and healthy too. The cigar-shed eggplant is sweeter and tastier than the usual bell-shaped one. Very nice!

Thanks for your recipe. I tried it & am quite satisfied with the result since this is my first trial. Frying the belachan is so smelly that I wouldn’t do it if I’m living in a flat or terrace house here in Germany! When my hubby came into the house, the first thing he said was “what stings so much?” Nevertheless he enjoys the food.

@Sue Ullrich...oh dear! LOL...I know what you mean..that is why I only do it once so I can store it in a jar, which lasts for weeks and months. Did you watch the other video on "sayur lemak" (vegetable curry) telling anyone who hasn't toasted a belachan before that it will smell the place? I had the link in this video or under the description of this video. Guess no more toasting belachan for you unless it's done outside..but, neighbours may report to the council that there is a foul smell in your backyard!

I have tried so many versions and variations of Sambal Eggplants, whether Malay or Chinese style, Malaysian, Singapore and even Indonesian style. Somehow after watching you prepare this dish, I can hardly wait to try your recipe which looks very tempting.

@@nanacumberbatch676 thanks for sharing the Netflix series. Just watched the trailer. Come to think of it, I have heard of it, and some scenes were filmed in Penang. I was a bit confuse when you said it was a "malay movie". As a Malaysians, I hope you don't mind me correcting this because it is a very good topic of discussion for other viewers. If we say "malay movie" we are referring to the Malay race type of movie, meaning with Malay casts and in Malay language. As you know, Malaysia is a multi-national society with a mixed culture of predominantly 3 races - Bumiputra (more popular known as Malay), Chinese and Indians, and indigenous people of Malaysia (Orang Asli) of different tribes, Eurasians, and other foreigners and expats. Even within the Chinese and Indian races, there are slight differences in the culture, tradition, dialect and origins. For example, in the Netflix series, the set and costumes were done in the era of "Chinese Peranakan heritage" ie during the Straits Settlement by the Chinese immigrants. The Chinese adopted the Malay culture in their Chinese cooking by blending local spices used in Malay and Indian cooking, and the woman wore a traditional Malay dress called "baju kebaya". The Straits Chinese woman known as "Nyonya" adopted the traditional Malay dress as in the netflix series, also known as "nyonya kebaya". Sorry for this long windedness to explain the melting pot of our beautiful culture and society of Malaysia. Now I am going to binge watch the series. Looks good in the trailer. Cheers, Victor
