    This is exactly why I don’t chase alone. I have a friend who drives, another friend who navigates, and I film. The navigator is responsible for not only finding the circulation, but also ensuring that there are southern and eastern exit route, even northern or western if the storm looks like it might turn. He communicates that to the driver. He is honestly the key element in all of it. We also chase in a high powered raptor. We can go anywhere and everywhere at high speeds if need be. If you chase alone, you have four jobs to do all at once. Drive, film, navigate, observe. That’s where it can get extremely dangerous for you.

      I’ve been binge watching tornado vids and it’s amazed me how many front drive 4 cylinder cars are used…I remember trying to drive in the snow when I had an 08 Jetta…Traction control wasn’t defeatable so I’d be stuck at like 4-5mph going up a hill because of slippage…With the wind sucking you in and the rain on the roads, I think it would be very similar.
      Soooo glad you chase with a Raptor, I hope there is kind of a push for chasers to have 4wd or awd chase vehicles! Keep you all safe for more data and media on these beautiful and terrifying systems!

    Dude, that was harrowing. I caught the raw footage when it happened, called my husband over to see it. He chased in the late 1970s, helping OU calibrate the "new" Doppler radar for tornadoes. He was literally screaming "Get out of the way!" as he watched. When you turned down the dirt road, both of us were just heartsick. When we saw the silos explode all over you, both of us were holding our breath. We figured you were either seriously hurt....or dead. Prayers hit immediately. When you came back and showed the car, we STILL marvel that you weren't hurt, or killed. That car held you and you came through it. And we're glad you weren't hurt. Cars can be replaced (insurance covers chasing???) and you'll be back. My husband says it's addicting, he would be out there if I wasn't wheelchair bound. We don't dare chase with me in the van.

It still would have been close but he might have been able to keep his car. It was a series of unfortunate miscalculations but thankfully it didn't cost him his life.

    • @117johnpar
      @117johnpar ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dont know about that saying too much. If that had much merit, fighting a war or battle would never be feasible. That's what training is for. Adrenaline makes you act faster. Slows things down for your perception and neuro responsiveness. Without adrenaline, you can have a plan but not have the reflex or alertness enough to enact it. Thats especially true with stuff like tornados. The takeaway is to have a plan. Being complacent makes you stupid.

    • @jnewcomb
      @jnewcomb ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@117johnpar Training is to prepare for a high adrenaline situation. It's meant to override the effects of adrenaline (even well trained individuals can experience an adrenaline freeze though). When one is running on pure adrenaline (no training for specific situation), it is statistically proven a person will make poorer decisions than in a low adrenaline situation. If you're lost in the woods, the first thing they tell you is to stay where you are, adrenaline tells you to try to find your way back cause it can't be that far. If you go with the adrenaline, you may end up walking further from your last known location making it harder for someone to find you and putting you at greater risk of injury or death.

    • @117johnpar
      @117johnpar ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jnewcomb You seem to think that fight or flight is somehow a net negative just because some might make a wrong choice in certain situations. Whatever statistical proof you have doesnt make it not silly to imply that the biologically evolved response to danger heightening ones senses and alertness is actually a bad thing.
      Adrenaline is not composure. Its a reaction your body has to a high stakes situation. You think athletes are making stupid decisions because they're at peak adrenaline scoring winning goals? Losing your composure is what makes you stupid. Not the natural bodily secretion when in those situations. I just think the interpretations got mixed up somewhere along the lines.

It should be the fragility of life, the raw strength of nature, and how your life should never come 2nd to social media success. Not to mention how you put decent humans at risk who will try to help you get out of a situation you put yourself in. You need to seriously step back and look inward.

I even bodily went through a waterspout. I was chased by two tornadoes in one night and I was NOT storm-chasing, I was driving a friend back to his home state. He slept through my whole ordeal. When he awoke, and asked me what happened, I told him. He goes, "Why didn't you wake me!?" I replied, "I didn't need you hollering in my ear, while I was trying NOT to kill us." This tornado was also rain wrapped and very difficult to see as the rfd was wrapping around and shrouding my view. Just my two cents: the name change etc is a temporary trauma response. People have tens of thousands of car accidents in the country every day, many with far worse results than this, and most due to mistakes in decision making. Many due to abject recklessness where people have no concern for their fellow humankind. This is HARDLY akin to something like that. Also, ditto that for accidents/injuries that occur when people are pursuing recreation/hobbies. Someone breaks their leg skiing because they made a poor decision, wipes out rollerblading, mountain biking etc. It HAPPENS. I've raced cars (on track of course) and high-speed karts in the past and had accidents. I didn't quit, I didn't have some sort of shame spiral about it, I lived and learned and got right back to it. I don't know why the chaser world, which quite frankly seems pretty toxic, backbiting, and envy-driven, is so quick to jump down the throat of a human being in a highly dynamic situation who happened to be less than perfect. They seem to love to attack their own. Seems odd to me. The High Risk moniker is obviously in reference to SPC designations, not 'hey, I'm HIGH RISK dude! I try to get hit!' I say don't change a thing beyond absorbing the lesson you've clearly learned. That's what life is and how we become better at things. Trying, and sometimes making mistakes. You're obviously very interested in the field and very good at it (your images are incredible.) Anyway, obviously do with these two cents as you wish. Cheers.

    • @shinyxcrab6342
      @shinyxcrab6342 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree, own the name and the lesson. The whole video shows humility and strength. Most people would be far too embarrassed I think. Regardless of bad decisions made, dude deserves some respect for owning it. It’s not easy to own your mistakes, certainly not for the whole world to see. And he did it with grace too. He did a great job explaining how and why a person could lose insight into just how much danger one is in also. It’s like those times you’ve heard of someone lifting a car off of another person just from adrenaline. Unfortunately, we’re no match for tornadoes… so, not really stupid, just a different, more primal part of your brain gets activated and becomes dominant in high stress situations and you can absolutely lose your capacity for critical thinking because of that. It can happen to anyone.

    First off I’m so glad you’re ok. That could have been SO MUCH WORSE. Hope you stay safe. On march 31st I got into a car accident because of straight line winds. It was almost April 1st and I was on my way home from seeing my sister and the lightning was pretty bad but I thought I could beat the storm since my home was 3 minutes away. DONT EVER TRY TO BEAT A STORM!!!!! I’m 17 and I’ve only ever been in one car accident before this but I was alone this time and I’m very scared of the dark and bad weather so I wanted to get home. In those three minutes I was trying to get home, the weather picked up in no time, and before I knew it I was hit by a tree not one minute from my house. My first instinct was to either go back to my sister or go to one of my neighbors but when I put the car in reverse, I didn’t move. All I did was call my mom to help me. When she got outside the wind knocked her over and totaled our truck door so she hung up on me. The last thing I heard from her was screaming and my mom is the panicky type. When she did that I thought she died because in my head I was in a tornado so I thought my family was gone. So all I did was stopped everything, sat and just prayed and thought about how I never got to really live. I thought that was the end of my life. After the storm calmed down and the police and rescue squad came to help me, it took me an hour to get out of the car because the tree was so big that they had to cut me out. After the car got out and I filed the report. I got the car home, and just sat in shock for a day or two until it hit me and I was just devastated for some reason. After that I was not the same and I am still struggling with the fear and the panic I feel during storms. I am so thankful that my family and I are ok. If you read all of this, thank you I needed to get that off my chest ❤

      Come to complete stops and do the same as mentioned above.
      Always try to drive no more than 5-10 over speed limit on highways and 5 on regular roads.
      Try to always give yourself enough space behind any vehicle, so that you can stop on a moments notice.

    The editing and storytelling on this is really good. It sounds like you learned a valuable lesson as well. This is a great illustration of how easy it is to unintentionally get yourself into a really dangerous situation, and I hope others can learn from this video as well. I think this is also a great illustration of what happens when you get more comfortable with doing dangerous activities. I firmly believe that more experienced chasers have a higher chance of something like this happening because they don't have their guard up high like new chasers do. Chase more > Get closer and closer each time > increasing odds of crossing paths with a tornado.

    • @mikexxxmilly

      I had the same thought. Great story telling structure. Would be the equivalent of a great pop song in music. Great intro leading into short chorus (teaser of what eventually happened) followed by verses (how we got here) bridge (building into chorus) and chorus with build and ultimate climax followed by the ultimate resolution. "Im lucky and ive learned from my mistakes, this is what im doing to change"
