This video has it all. Real talk. Black couch. Tea. PP. I love it.
On a serious note though, thank you for addressing the pitfalls of many starting out in this hobby. I suggest (from a content creators point of view) to refer to your earlier videos if you're bringing up previously addressed points. Keep it up!

Love your stuff dude - as real as it gets - as opposed to so many other youtubers and twitch streamers that lie to the public promoting their sponsors - keep it real ! :)

I love this video. I also made quite a few mistakes early on in this hobby. Saw so much hype about Ink Blacks, bought about 180 inks then when I tried some gat yellows. I was like "shit, the sound, smoothness and spring weight suits me more at a cheaper price." But again, making "mistakes" is also part of the journey I guess, though we can minimize it a little more if we are more prudent like you said.

Great stuff, great advice. Might have broken up a couple of these though. Have slight buyer's remorse about JWK switches due to high pitch sound but otherwise not too bad.

these videos deserve more views, liked! real talk is good info for new people getting into this hobby. a decent lesson in life too. your suggestion on getting minimum switches is great, i went through years to find my preferred switches. r/mk , listen to this guy.
blacksimon: Would love to hear your input as well on how you've seen the hobby change, trends, switches, history. I think a lot of people have joined the hobby this past year, they might find it interesting to know things have changed. The history of this hobby is interesting!

Same I like thick pbt and flexible plates way more. I have found that I really like mauves with TX 16 mm 65g springs. I realized I don't really like very smooth switches like the tangies but prefer a little bit of resistance. I found that in tactiles I like the most harsh, jarring, and noticeable bumps such as box royals and blueberries. I like deskkeys films over thick films or TX films. I started out this hobby loving clicky switches now I absolutely hate them. I prefer hearing the switch or no sound over a click. I prefer type feel over sound.

As a mostly outsider of this hobby, this seems like incredibly important advice, but should be common sense.
I can't really judge myself, but I consider myself an enthusiast to some degree.
I have little interest in tweaking the switches, plates, mounting, ect. currently, though I do like to tinker with my boards.
And keyboard content is something that greatly interests me, especially the opposing and not mainstream views.
A few years ago I imported a cheap mechanical board, to try the technology, not knowing what I'd be getting besides the basic MX switch types.
Ended up growing more and more frustrated with that board as it has a lot of issues.
Namely, the switches are and stay scratchy and feel inconsistent due to the wobble (which would be fine if it doesn't impact the feel as much as it does).
Also had to desolder and move some problematic switches around but never got it quite right and when typing, the light weighting slowed me down due to trying to avoid pressing multiple keys.
Recently got the opportunity to upgrade, after a lot of research I decided to try buckling springs as those switches seem to have the properties I like of those reds, but lack the issues.
Importing my New Model M was relatively expensive, but the switches were what I expected, having watched conflicting reviews on them.
Ended up being incredibly happy with the switches, but the controller PCB was broken.
Which I got a replacement for in warranty, but set replacement has other issues, so I will look into repairing the controller I initially received to solve those.
While those switches aren't as moddable, I did use it's ability to freely change keycaps around to try a different layout, ended up developing my own flavour of a UNIX layout.
Changed my laptop to this too, adding stickers on it's keys, as I found more benefit in this layout than I expected I would.
As such, a future board will be focussed on having a moddable layout, might try the UHK, with a trackball module as that's another thing I tried and fully switched to.
Or the Wooting, I find it's sensing tech intriguing and that board seems great for if I shift to gaming more on M+KB again, which I currently do less as I've been using my Steam Deck's unique inputs.
Either would open the gate for more MX style mods for me, which I think I'd enjoy then as I've grown more familiar with my current new board and as the switch market will probably have toned down on the hype recolours.
For now I'm happy with what I have, but this is a hobby I will continue to return to and get sucked deeper into over the course of years.
As is evident I feel no pressure to fit in with the rest of the hobby, but I do have a significant interest in keyboards.
This, as seen above, I like to type A LOT, writing many long comments or posts and wanting to improve my experience doing so.
The way this wall of text stands out as a comment here (ruining the count of 42 too), nicely reflects that.
