    Bradley thanks again for video. I have been using 13A plug since my Polestar arrived about one month ago. In process of getting a 7kw installed. I have been getting 4 mph on the display however actually seems to charge quicker than that. I only commute three times a week so no problem at the moment

      Great, yeah good to hear. I think the displayed charging rate is quite conservative

    We are looking at the Polestar 2, thankfully I work from home and the wife works 3 miles away, so for us personally this would work just fine, the only thing we would need to factor in is the odd weekend away, really useful video, thank you

    The Teslas have a setting that allows the car to keep the interior below 105 degrees F at all times by utilizing the air conditioning. I visited my parents this summer in Mrytle Beach, South Carolina. I arrived at 15% state of charge and let it sit for 4 days and 4 nights on the travel charger at 12A, in the heat and humidity before finally reaching 100%. Their electricity was free (included in the HOA fee) and we used the electric golf cart the entire time of my stay, so the travel chargers do have some usefulness at times. There was a supercharger within 2 miles, but why pay for range when you don't need to? Good video. Everyone needs to be aware of all the options available to them and the use cases for each option.

    Put this in context : I charge on mains at work. It's "slow," as you say, but over 8 hours it covers my round - trip commute distance with some to spare. I precondition the cabin, but the system only operates for a few minutes before departure, so it's only a minor penalty. This is a great way to charge if it meets the daily requirements. "Slow" charge at work, charge at a higher rate at home infrequently , when needed,

      99% of the charging I do on my model 3 is slow charging like this. Usually at work. Every other day or so is enough for me. I have a fairly short commute though.

      I’m not sure how many people would be able to charge their car at work. I can’t. No sockets available in the car park and the management won’t allow it anyway.

    I've been using the 13a charger since I got my Polestar and have no problems at all.
    I plug in via a smart plug to select the best times on Octopus Agile for charging, The smart plug shows a maximum of 2.3kW whilst charging but it fluctuates as low as 1.8kW which would explain your 2% per hour. It actually gives 2.5% per hour over a sustained period. I did 10 hours last night in the plunge pricing period and went from 65% up to 90%
    My mileage is quite low at about 120 per week on average but even with the Polestars abysmal cold weather range I can easily cope. I don't even plug in every night, I just hover between 40% and 60% and wait until there's some reasonable pricing and have a little top up as and when.
    I had a long trip a few weeks ago which just needed a bit of forward planning and I had to make sure I was always at 85% ready for topping up to 100% the night before my trip. Again not a problem you just have to think ahead.
    On a side note: The charger companies really wind me up when they claim you need a proper charger as 13a sockets aren't designed for pulling this sort of load 'continually'. Absolute rubbish!! That's exactly what they're designed for!! Mini rant over........
    Thanks for another great, informative video.

      Thanks, great to hear experience from someone using it regularly. Was great to get paid last night to us power but annoyingly I was already at 75%, wish I hadn't topped up two days ago.

      @1evilpie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShortCircuitPS2 If you go to windfinder.com you can get a very good idea of what the pricing will be over the next week as prices are heavily linked to excess wind energy.
      Even at the start of the week you could see that there was going to be a lot of wind on Saturday night and as the weekend got closer the prediction stayed the same. Lots of wind at a weekend between midnight and 6am is pretty much perfect for cheap pricing.

      I don't know the exact details in Great Britain, but in Germany we have the 1-phase "Schuko" plug and the sockets are for max. 16A designed but it is definitely not allowed to pull this load continuously, only 1 hour at max. load according to German standards.
      A CEE socket must be installed for 16A permanently. Single-Phase 25A or 32A is also possible in combination with CEE, but unusual in privat home installations in Germany.

      I've had a 2kw heater melt and burn a socket, and a granny charger melt the switch in a socket only 6 years old. They really cannot sustain 13a for extended periods, and its for this reason you aren't supposed to use immersion heaters wired into a plug any more.

    I thought I would never use this 3-pin plug cable but I’ve just got home solar installed and during the summer I can trickle charge all day for free ⚡️👍🏻
    I also have a Pod Point but using this plug cable is just easier than messing around with other settings.

    thanks for the share.
    Very interesting. i’m considering waiting before investing in a wall box. 3pin plug can be enough if you don’t do more than 50miles a day.
    also there are other ways to charge. Shopping moles parking , Supermarkets, public roads.
    Some of them are almost as cheap as home and often can charge up to 22Kwh.
    depending on your profile, a home charger might even be not necessary at all, no matter the speed. Especially if you live very close near a 22kwh charging station with decent price. which is possible if you live in a city

    Thanks for making this. Actually really useful for me, as I am waiting for my Void Polestar 2 on a business lease (March apparently) and am currently renting so was planning to use the 3 pin plug for charging.
    We are planning to buy a house in 2021 and at that point I would get a proper home charger, but for now it's not worth paying for it on my landlords house.

    You have a very good point if you have a second car to use on the occasions you don't have the range to do a trip for pleasure in the evening it would save the investment of a 7kw charger. I also have the option to charge at work on a 7kw for free

  • @SirHackaL0t.

    Are you able to change the Charge Limit in the app?
    Also, when using the 3 pin charger it’s worth setting the amps to below 13A as it’s likely to overheat the socket. A 13A socket isn’t typically designed to pull 13A continuously for hours at a time. My Tesla won’t charge greater than 10A on a British plug.
    The car will charge slightly quicker if you aren’t sat in it as it doesn’t need to run the screens, seat heater etc if you aren’t in it. :)

    I have a 1000kva generator at home, runs on red diesel at 20 gallons per hour, I’m going to charge my EQC off that over night! Should do the trick 👍

  • @CarFinanceSimplified

    Interesting. So assuming around a 10A draw from three pin plug - approx. 2300W per hour. So at 3 miles per hour, this is 767W per mile? This is only 1.3 miles per kWh?

    • @ShortCircuitPS2
      @ShortCircuitPS2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, and i don't think the display is particularly realistic. I think it should say more like 4 to 5 miles per hour

    • @CarFinanceSimplified
      @CarFinanceSimplified 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShortCircuitPS2 I’ve just installed a 24A charger for home for when I get my Polestar so I was hoping for about 12 miles per hour based on 5.5kWh?

    • @ShortCircuitPS2
      @ShortCircuitPS2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'd say about 15 miles per hour is what I've seen when charging at home on a 32 amp charger so you should hopefully be close to that.

      @@CarFinanceSimplified I think the Polestars battery % indicator is accurate but the range indicator is a joke. Woefully inaccurate and doesn't 'learn' from your driving style between charges. It seems to adapt a bit from a full charge but every time you plug in it just gets it all wrong.

    I tried a Mercedes c350e 3 pin plug cable and got twice the charge speed of the Polestar 3pin plug.

    Hi...my Polestar’s due in about a months time and it’s my first EV. Have got somebody who can fit a 7kw charger but not sure what’s the best one to have, or if there is a ‘best one’ as they all do the same thing? Also looks like you can only buy some fitted (EO) and can’t buy just the charging units? Know it’s not directly related to this vid but any advice/help would be appreciated as I’m very confused!!🙈🤷🏼‍♂️👍

      TH-cam of course and look at (and join) Polestar-forum.com and have a search around. I’m not familiar with the Facebook forums but they are out there. Ultimately they all do the same . Ground rods no longer required, apps essential, consider if you will go on overnight or solar tariffs. Aesthetics - think of how and where the cable will lie or wrap in your particular situation ie outside wall or in a garage. Enjoy your P2.

      Richard I have had my Polestar around a month and been charging from the 13a plug mostly. I am awaiting to have a 7kw charger fitted. My installation is not standard and requires extra work. I particularly want an EO charger as it is small and compact. The price charged by EO contractor seemed excessive for the extra work. I called EO and asked for a price just for the charger and they started off saying no. I then said OK I will have to get another charger then and they quote me a a purchase price of £487 inc VAT. I have found a local approved electrician who I am sure will give me a cheaper price. Just awaiting his price. There is a list on Government website. I dowloaded and looked for local approved installers.. Hope that helps.

    Why is it only charging at 9 amps on a 13 amp supply ? - I mean its showing 9 amps at 221 volts which is just 2kw.

      Max sustained allowed from a UK plug is 10A. Most car supplied EVSE are limited to 10A. You can get aftermarket units that go to 13A but not really recommended. As for the amps they do tend to go up and down a bit. On my 3pin charger the ampage pulled is generally 0.5-1.0A less than selected.
