Why is it so easy to break promises to yourself? You tell yourself you’re going to study hard and get good grades, and within a couple weeks you’ve slid back into all your old bad habits. We’ve all been there. Socratica Friends, it’s time to adopt some good study habits FOR REAL this time.
We think part of the problem is - you expect yourself to be PERFECT! Instead, let’s focus on what is reasonable for all good students. In this video, we’ll talk about what are the 12 (ish) BEST study habits to adopt - always with an eye on what is actually do-able. We say “12-ish” because there are a few extra tips thrown in here and there. You’ll see!
If you have other tips you’d like to share about how to get good grades in high school, college, or grad school, PLEASE add them in the comments! We all can learn from each other’s experiences.

This reminded me of my former grade 3 teacher back in the '80s & I was not very attentive in her class back then. But, she got me into reading after asking me "do you know the connection between mythology and astronomy?" Then she gave me Anita Hamilton's book and another book about astronomy...got hooked since then.

Your point about limiting yourself by listening to what you are told you can do hit home for me. I'm in finance by degree and job, and was always told "leave the coding/development/technology stuff to the IT professionals", but the biggest jumps I made up the corporate ladder were from learning how to code and automating my job and improving processes for others.
One of my mentors introduced me to VBA, then python, and I've doubled my salary in 2 years and found my job MUCH more interesting and enjoyable since incorporating them into my career.

My graduate degree is in accounting, but my undergrad is in theoretical math (not applied). Math is way more fun, but accounting is way more stable. The only place for theoretical math is usually the universities, and most people aren't elite enough to go that route. I know I'm not. I found that out when I took real analysis. But I still enjoy math a lot as a hobby. I couldn't stand doing accounting for both work and as a hobby.

If this helps anyone, my goal in studying is just to casually form good habits-- you know, I get self-conscious sometimes when I have a schedule to follow on how often I study, so I make it like I only study when I want to, but I want to study often.
I know they said studying in bed is generally a no no in earlier videos but if I surround myself with things I use during breaktime from studying (e.g. my phone to the side, having Minecraft minimized on my computer), it kind of subconsciously reenforces the idea that I'm studying because I want to study, not because I have to. My most effective studying gets done in bed, but I know other people don't have the same mindset as me so it just depends on the person.
Well, my desire to learn more is more important than how well I perform, frankly, so that's what I try to work on the most.

It's called "How to Be a Great Student," and it's actually a collection of funny stories about how she figured out HOW to learn, mainly by making every possible mistake along the way. You don't have to study this book, just read it for pleasure and you will soak in the lessons!

When I studied math we had 40 hours of class every week, I found that the way to get through it is to "get to the core of what is being taught". You dont have time to learn and memorize everything from a lecture, instead, me and my friends would sit down after classes during our 15 min break and talk about what we thought the core of the lesson was. That's what we build our understanding around. Also: Coffee is not your friend! Stay strong and study hard! :)

1:50 "[...] you often don't have much say in what you are being taught at this very moment, you do have control over your reaction to this situation." This sounds an awful lot like 2020. The loose of control. I don't think a human can really handle that kind of pressure. I think in life you should change what you are not happy with instead of accepting defeat. If you don't like being stuck in rooms all the time you shouldn't put up with it. You should create a counter weight like going outside or doing sports. If you are unhappy with the thing you are currently studying and you don't see a future for you with it, maybe it just isn't the right thing for you. This can be terrible advice. But it might also help.
I like your videos and the access to this kind of knowledge Socratica presents. You amazing people gonna get some bucks over Patreon once I hooked that up.

No kidding - the PandemicTime has been such an extreme case of this - it's been true all along, but now it's SUPER true, unavoidably true.
Thank you for your kind words, Socratica Friend! We're glad you're watching. And hey, no worries about not being on Patreon now - we really hope the people who *can* support us there will, but we remember very clearly what it was like not having any moneys to spare while we were students and when we were first starting out. Just give us a shout out on social media and share with your friends - you can't believe how helpful that is for our growth so we can keep making videos. 💜🦉

What does K12 education mean? Something like 12 year compulsory education

    • @Socratica
      @Socratica  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly, the compulsory education from Kindergarten through 12th grade for the US and Canada. Educators use this term a lot here. Unless something has gone very wrong, we assume that every adult has had that kind of education at a minimum. We understand that there is something similar in Turkey (we've heard the term 4 + 4 + 4)?

It shouldn't be - it's smooth HD on our end, but you know, YT sometimes has ideas. Today, every YT video we load to watch is defaulting to 240 or 480p. Thanks YT!
