  • * Note address update below. Sadly, Mary the owner, has passed and Motorvation is now permanently closed. But, Gary the Engineer, is still building Sidecars for Midwest Sidecars as they call it now, a division of the Short and Tall Body shop here in Sibley, Iowa. I've always been a motorcycle enthusiast and even built my own Side car for my 1975 Honda GL 1000 Gold wing, which was a first for both. When I found out that Motorvation was making sidecars here in Sibley, I met up with them and decided to make this video for those who have never had the sidecar experience. I got to ride and drive one too, which was the first time I rode someone else's side car since building my own 43 years ago. It was like being young again. Thanks for watching folks. Here is the link, address, and phone number. If interested, give Gary a call and tell him, Dave sent you.

    I visited the Watsonian Squire Sidecar "Outfit" last year during my Visit to England.
    I own four Combinations. My oldest is a 1922 B.S.A. , 1943 B.S.A. , 1942 1200 Harley-Davidson and my modern a Moto Guzzi with Squire Sidecar.

    Excellent video, storyline, and content. But I do think it is poor judgement that nobody is wearing helmets or protective gear especially on new unfamiliar rides. We just had four fatalities this past weekend with two bikes that met head-on. Always be safe.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I ride my Goldwing with a helmet all the time and my wife rides her Shadow with a Helmet. Were in our 70s, so know the dangers. There is no helmet requirement here and I and Gary have been riding sidecars for many many years, so they are not unfamiliar. I know about the Marines killed too. They all had helmets on, so nothing is 100%. We don't have the traffic here in NW Iowa like we had when I lived and rode in California, but I only did this to make a video, not the norm for us. Thanks.

    What is the standard lean angle ? I didn`t catch that even with a replay . I thought it might be 2 degrees outward lean? I loved the video . Sidecars are so stable once your got the feel .

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Well I have to ask. The lean angle is set to zero with someone inside it, usually 180 lbs. We usually adjust them depending on the load. Also the angle of tow in is about 2 degrees. Ill ask Gary the mechanic to answer you, soon as I see him. This company is not out of business, but may be starting up again soon with a new name. Thanks.

      It depends on the camber of the roads in your area. Road camber is the amount of drop of the road from the center of the road to the outside edge of the road. Road's are not flat, they are at a slight angle to allow rain to flow off the road. Areas with high rainfall will have a greater camber than areas with limited rainfall. When lean out is set correctly the motorcycle will be perfectly upright while the sidecar is riding lower than when it's sitting on a perfectly level surface. That's why your sidecar motorcycle rides differently and pulls to the left constantly when in the left lane on a 4 lane highway. The road camber is backwards in that lane from the right lane. When I set up a sidecar I place 3/4 inch plywood under the motorcycle tires to simulate road camber because I measured the average road camber and found the drop was 3/4 inches in 5 feet. Then I simply level the motorcycle using the struts and a level tied to the rear tire. You can check the average camber in your area with a straight 5 foot 2x4 with a level attached to it. When no traffic is around place the board on the pavement, lift the right side of the board until the bubble shows level, and measure the gap between the board and road surface. Now you know the width of wood to place under the motorcycle tires.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Russian Ural could only go 45 MPH. That was it's top speed, but not limited by the side car. I drove my home made side car daily to work for 12 years at 70 mph on the California Freeways and modern sidecars can do the same very safely.

      I have the military version of the Ural. It's a Dnepr MT-11. It's top speed is 45 mph but not due to the sidecar. The limiting factor is the gearing. Back in the Soviet Union days sidecar motorcycles were the family car and truck. You could put the entire family on one or haul large loads. I have a Honda VLX Shadow 600cc with a Velorex 562 sidecar. I can easily run 70 MPH on it without feeling like it's unsafe to do that.
