  • This is a test of the 100 gr Trifecta 1.65 (& 1.87") Mechanical Hybrid broadhead.
    Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    Trifecta Hybrid 100 gr Total Score: 85.14 = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 19 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 16.33 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.65" = .38" = 2.03" = 5.69 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.03" = 5.69 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.65" = 4.95 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 19.4 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, Mech: 200 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +0 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 18.61 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8" = 8 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (1.65": 67 layers = 8.61 pts; 1.87": 61 layers)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (10/10 = 2 pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 12.8 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (9/10 = 10.8 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (2/10 = 1 pt)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (1 pt...1 is the max for heads that don't survive the steel)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS:
    +1 no O ring
    +1 modular design
    -2 blades closed about 1/2 during penetration tests
    -1 blades can open easily by being bumped or pressing in a quiver
    TOTAL SCORE: 85.14 pts = 9 Golden Arrows

    I find it interesting that every Trifecta Broadhead you tested started the sharpness test at 200. That tells me they have great quality control across all the different blades they produce. Just one man’s observations. Love your videos. Keep it up.

      Thank you. I will say, though, that in 2024 I purchased a more accurate sharpness tester. It’s the same company, but the older model rounded to the nearest 25 grains. This new model does not round at all; it’s to the single grain.

      Yeah, Mechs are getting better & better....and that flight advantage in nervous, windy, or shooting thru thick brush is a huge advantage--not to mention the cut size.

    Love the testing and how well you keep it apples to apples for all heads tested. One thing I noticed after your move is that the field tip to broadhead flight test is harder to see from the new angle. Can you move the camera to the porch so its closer? That would make it easier to see where the arrows land? Keep up the great work!!

    If they can buff up the pin that holds the blades and lock them in place, it'll be one tough head.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they're looking into strengthening that pin...though in animals it's probably not an issue. Sevr has the locking mechanism they use patented, and no other Gator style head has come up with another one yet.

  • @GBBLGBL
    @GBBLGBL ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just trying to be fair here John on the "gator style" heads in the gel. It's far too restrictive of a medium and thus forcing them closed and makes them look like they fail when in an animal they won't. I understand all the heads get treated within the same parameters but the ones that "stay locked open" definitely stay open but penetration is less on those. Maybe 2024 would be to ditch the ballistic gel and find a new medium. One that is more fair across the board? Just a thought. Love all the vids! One all the hard work on the testing!
    Only reason I say this is the TruGlo/NAP 4 blade Ti is a phenomenal head for me on turkeys and I have seen zero evidence of the blades closing on my examination of the chest cavity.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Steve. I understand that and usually try to make that comment as well. And that's why I added the Layered Cardboard test. But many people really like to see the penetration in Clear Gel, so I kept it in there. But all of these tests have their limitations, that's for sure.

    Applaud the gator style...my favorite style broadhead with floating blades to go around bone with a passthrough for me every time unless backbone or opposite leg is hit. The negatives is for me the cit on contact tip. Every cut on contact tip had always bent and broke in deer. The orignal chisel type gator 100 tips busted though bone instead of bending and braking like the cut on contact tips always did. Also it's way under a 2" cut. The head is definitely set up for lower poundage compounds with a cut on contact tip and small cutting diameter. I would like to see some one make a 3" gator style titanium or steel head with a chisel tip. I'm shocked the tip held up in concrete as well as it did. If they made it in at least 2
    5" to 2 3/4" in a 100 grain I'd be tempted to try them.

      We get a 2” entry every time with the 1.65 in every animal we’ve shot and 2.5-3” in every animal with the 1.87”. That tip is much better than a chisel tip in bone. Feel free to email us and we will send pics of entries or look at them on the website. -Rob

      @@robschneider8214 Yes. Even when I shot the old Rocky Mountain Snyper gator style heads we got 2” entry wounds even though it was only 1 3/8” broadhead. The gators always leave a larger hole then the actual width do to the splash entry.

    I'm really interested in running these or at least trying them from my tenpoint 450 stealth crossbow typically iv been running the 150 2"cut sevr or the 1.5 125 grain. And also have a few of the fatal steel grimreaper heads and cross bow rated heads

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures

      I'd be interested to see if these open prematurely out of your crossbow. I've not tested that and each crossbow model is so different in that regard--not just due to speed but also the discharge itself. I know the Sevrs work very well out of a crossbow, as do the GRs.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did the rotation test and it was not nearly as significant as the fixed...but better than a typical double bevel mech. I'm sure in bone, there will be some rotation from that small tip...but the more flared the head is, the better the rotation.

    i will never use a gator style head. the little wing blades are at a mechanical disadvantage compared to the rear long cutting blades. the excess leverage on the back cutting blades will always over power the small amount of leverage on the small wing blades, forcing them to remain closed.

  • @michaelrosa5410
    @michaelrosa5410 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once again 'm not a mechanical fan, but you can't deny this head is built as good if not better than the majority of mechanicals made today. Pins are the weakest link to all mechanicals. The Gator style as it loses momentum can aide actually in busting thru the far side to let blood out making 2 holes. Always better than 1 hole.

      We have tested several other options as far as the pin and stainless is the way to go. The only other way to keep it from breaking from that hard impact is to change the tip orientation or to sharpen the tabs upfront but then your instrument suffers. I have never broken a blade through any animals I have shot with any of our mechanicals.

      @@robschneider8214 I feel like your head is pretty durable for a mechanical. way back when ,I actually tested broadeads as John does now. I had a different scoring system and method but it was similar but more crude than his. steel is a really tough test for any head.I have seen lots of heads come apart on a steel drum, but they all killed animals just fine. I think you are on the cusp of having one of the premier mechanical heads, if the blade loss issue could be fixed. That said I will be trying the fixed blade versions when the 125's come out.The fixed blade configuration was excellent for sure.. I mean no offense by any of this, I just see greatness right at your finger tips. I had similar debates with Gary at slick trick years ago, and with two small changes the slick trick went from a decent head the one of the best replaceable blade fixed heads on the market. we all have to keep in mind that these tests in no way reflect how a head will do in living animals, but they are simply a way to compare heads to one another. That said in my opinion the better a head does in these tests, the less of a chance for failure on live animals.

      If you only knew how many bow hunters practice shooting in residential areas😂. It looks clear behind him- some kind of green belt. He’s shooting close range and he’s not some amateur, so there’s not really much risk of a flier and an even lower risk of a flier actually causing any damage or harm to an unintended target.
