Dudley's message is spot on. Right tool for the right application. 500 to 700 grain arrow for TAC makes no sense. It might make sense for an ELK hunt, but Dudley is spot on .... accuracy, accuracy, accuracy .... practice, practice, practice ... The industry is so good and many of the Ashby research is already inherently built in i.e. durability, etc., Get your setup shooting a great arrow - what does that mean for me or you? We need to figure that out for ourselves and our setup! Great message - great content. Thanks fellows.
How (freakin') lucky are we as bowhunters to have such a knowledgeable archer share his years and years of experience with us...thank you for taking the time to do this.
This podcast is as educational as one could ask for! The information here is something I feel every bow hunter should listen to! A must for anyone wanting either to improve their arrow's performance or learning about the importance of balance, speed aiding good trajectory and range estimation errors... a couple yards can mean a miss vs a wounded animal and his explanation of why the heavier arrow weight/high FOC isn't always giving someone the best advantage. Great stuff you guys! Keep them coming.
John man of so much good information, Dan man of so much experience. Ashby data. Is this what we really need. All of you guys are well respected. You are all at the top. And yes we will all still value your opinions. No doubt we will all take in as much information as we can, & use what information we feel will work the best. If that doesn’t work we will get back to you guys. I thank you all for your dedication & beliefs. Regards Steve Richardson Australia
“You should spare neither effort nor expense in achieving perfect arrow flight. Even with every other factor in place, without good arrow flight you will have poor arrow performance” -Dr. Ed Ashby I think a lot of the people get stuck on the 650 gr arrow when they watch Ranch Fairy videos and skip over the arrow flight part.
Obviously you are not listening to Troy well enough. He's a arrow flight first guy. Sure FOC rox, but if it won't fly right, it's not good. Same with 650 grains. He just happens to say MOST people will be in the 65-67 pound pull range. Well im not, i'm 80 so I had to listen harder to what he was pitching. Sure FOC, penetration, BUT a TUNED arrow. You have to absorb the whole PITCH he's stating. His info is actually proven physics based on momentum being harder to stop then less momentum. Tune it with FOC and whalla.
Literally, both my mentors in one screen, they probably don't know it but everything I know about archery comes from these guys. Dan's philosophies have changed my life
This was, by far, one of the best podcasts I've listened to. Dud is a stud, and the works he's put in and the knowledge he drops for us constantly is wild. You two are my go-to archery guys! Thanx for the work.
This was such a fun one! So glad I watched the video as opposed to listen to just audio. Great info and just a fun “hangout” with Dan and Dud! “Notch tags and love archery”
Thank you for getting Mr. Dudley on your podcast. That man helped me with his school of nock after I came back to bow hunting. We all want to be ethical hunters, tinker with things (broad heads, point weight, fletchings) see what works best for you but don't forget to practice at rangers you are comfortable with and possibly hunting at. Love the continent from both of your guys, would like to possibly see elk hunt together this fall? Great job Dan keep up the great work.
Great content by great people.. I got into archery 7 years ago, and your channel has great information.. mad respect for the time and energy you put into this..
Absolutely loved this pod dude!!! I love John's outlook and dedication and passion as an archer and it shows. The dude is a freakin genius and is highly underrated imo. Imo if ya don't know John ya don't know shit about archery. He is a major reason archery is where it is today and that's the cold hard truth.
Caught the live on IG yesterday, and really enjoyed it. JDud has forgotten more technical info than most will ever know in the Archery world. Love his takes. Thanks Dan
I am sooooo glad you had Dud on I have been following him since 2013 knowing his background and his knowledge he is so good for the archery community 🤘🏻
Really good podcast! So much technical information. I remember when the tune charts were on the weak side and spoke to John about it. His rewrite of the spine chart was right on! Thanks guys for presenting this information!
Thank you Dan and John! Great discussion. Favorite part was how John talked about there being a Middle Ground. This is what I’ve been waiting to hear. - Best, EE
Totally agree with Dud, hope more follow his path of re-education!! I help a lot of buds get into archery and the majority jump straight to the fanciest gear and get mad that they aren’t instant pros! Gotta put the work in first!!
Loved this pod. I became a Dud fan boy because of his passion that I also share of Archery, not bow hunting. I love bow hunting but the love of the sport and discipline of archery is above that. I want to be the most accurate and precise archer I can. That will translate to lethality. Archery is a year round thought for me. Ever since I adopted that mindset and the ABT mindset from elk shape, I have become a much better archer. Hopefully I’ll be able to test that one day at a TAC one day soon.
Dud is THE authority in my opinion. If there is a question his answer is the final answer. Also I respect his approach to teaching and growing archery.
Glad to see u guys drop this so soon, was watching the live stream on the gram yesterday and it kept fading in and out of where I was. Thanks for posting it up.
I just wish all these guys with years of knowledge and data would publish it. Put it out there so we can all get better and build on it. “Success does not dictate best practices”
Troy is about killing hogs and deer that are close range. I believe that he is spot on for close range, but accuracy at distance John cannot be denied!! He is SPOT ON!!
Another dope interview. I've been trying to concentrate more on my form lately. You can have the perfect arrow setup, but if you have bad form, that arrow won't perform like it should. Keep these rollin' out. I learn alot from your discussions. #ABT
For years Ive tried everything. New release, arrows, sight, stabilizers. Bow paper tuned, bareshaft, walkback, torque tune, and after hundreds of hours and who knows how much money I figured it out. It was all me. My form and release werent consistent. I could see my arrows correcting inflight. Now everything flies like a dart. Spend more money and time perfecting youre form and shot.
Great podcast Dan! We love Dudley here in the NE. I never really jumped into the heavy arrow trend. For instance. This year I’m shooting the V3X 29 again. Im have a 27.5 inch draw length. 65 lb mods with limbs cranked down. Drawing back 67 lbs with Rouge R21 strings. My X impact finished finished weight is 420 g. I get pass thru shots on every Whitetail I decide to shoot. From our local bucks to last years 291 lb Kansas buck. What’s most important is accuracy and shot placement.
Wow, what an incredible resource and podcast. JD is getting texts from Joe Rogan but caring just as much about schooling the archery community at large. Great job Dan, thanks!
Concept of “start with the basics” should be the focal point while in the prep stages of a season be it for hunting or competition. I get behind science and testing. Seeing my own test results down range. Absorb the information, categorize it, apply it and see what works best for you. Information like this makes me question how I’ve been building my arrows up to this point. Just as Troys videos have. Giving me more to learn and experience to make my setup as best I can. Great video guys!
After watching Dud’s video the other day and now this one, I am in such a better place. Thanks to both of you. Already shot the AM but going to go do some more.
John shoots 520 grains with 150 to 175 out front Troy never said you have to shoot 700 grains. THP shoots sub 600 grain. Watch all Troy's videos not media cuts
Some people just can’t grasp the concept RF is teaching. If all those people could judge yardage or use a dam rangefinder… ! If you are shooting at a whitetail more than 40yrds, you are wrong. Wind, animal reactions, your nerves. Elk maybe 60yrds but they offer a much bigger target. No arrow no matter how fast is gonna beat an alert animal jumping the string. Especially a loud ass 70lb bow shooting a 300gr arrow. Crazy all the haters !
Great discussion. Amazing information. The hunting situations discussed are amplified in archery hunts but can still be applicable to rife hunts. great point made that so much information is out there today with technical documentation backing a point to make one better. When in reality its the basics and understanding the process that makes the greatest strides in improvement. In Long range shooting and Archery people start and focus on technology/equipment thinking it will give the most gains forward. But in reality a focus on the basics and identifying the right tech to focus on will give the largest leaps forward. one can get lost in the ocean of data points.
Such good stuff... At a ATA YEARS ago when he was doing the DD thing he took the time to chat. It has also been great to see him grow as a human being... Just a good dude. He once said something to the effect that you setup a bow by making sure everything is in spec but you tune a bow by adjusting poundage and arrows... I also think he is saying is that today's gear is more accurate than we will ever be so just about anything can shoot well, we just need to be better shooters.
People don’t have the patience for the love and dedication John Dudley has toward archery..
Great to see he has everyones best interest at heart. 🙏
His arrow vids have brought me back to reality. It's all about focus, form, and practice
