Heat capacity of lava is 1450 J/kg/K, for iron it's 462, so actual lava would have done better.
Latent heat of melting ice is 330 000 J/kg and heat capacity of water is 4200 J/kg/K.
This is why the ice always wins.
Nerd
Nerd x2
Question, if the water was pumped/sucked out as soon it became liquid, how much more prigress would the heated metal make? Significantly more or not that much?
I was thinking similarly, not so deeply but I knew that wasn't lava and this guy is the clickbait mastah lol
It's not the energy required to melt the ICE that's really sucking up all the heat; it is the energy of BOILING THE WATER. The specific heat requirements for evaporating water is RIDICULOUSLY high. Something like 2,200,000 joules per kg. And that's not the energy required to heat the ice from -10C to 100C, it's JUST the energy required to turn it from 100C water to 100C gas.
If you were to instead put the ice on top of the "lava" instead of putting the "lava" in a hole in the ice (so the water flowed away once melted, instead of immersing the "lava" in water), or if you drilled a drain hole through the ice block to drain the water away as the ice melts , it would melt much more ice.
Seems that I severely underestimated how powerful a huge block of ice would be. I expected it to break and melt easily with lava that is over 1000 degrees Celsius.
Dssssrt
Water has the highest know specific heat. Meaning it takes A LOT of energy to melt ice.
Water came to the rescue 🤣😂
That's the principle of latent heat at work. The ice can't get any hotter than 0c until it's absorbed sufficient energy to change into water, and the water can't go any hotter than 100c until it's absorbed sufficient energy to change into steam. It also illustrates the difference between heat and temperature. The lava and the ball bearings may be at a very high temperature, but they don't have sufficient heat to melt all that ice.
Now it's on TH-cam that we find talented scientists while in classrooms it's the desert is that normal..XD
The only time I’ve seen someone make actual lava was the backyard scientist
Recently watched a vid about a volcano in Antarctica so had a rough idea how this would go.
Still fascinating

After this heat wave this is extremely satisfying
I'm surprised that it didn't explode. When I was young I lived near an iron works and somebody dropped a big chunk of metal that hadn't cooled down in the river. The explosion was heard all over the town. Injured the truck driver.
Im not an expert but I suspect its because the block was too big and it didnt heat the whole thing. If it was a lot more lava Im sure it would have exploded
@@Valkbg And it was of course cooler than the river water.
Water expands when evaporates. But ice is less dense then water. When water is frozen, its volume increases. That's why a glass of water breaks in the freezer. When ice is melted, its volume descreases.
Exactly, I was pushing my self away from the screen cause I really thought the explosion would surprise me, but nothing happened
Not an expert but I think another factor is that Lava is not made of melted metal if im not mistaken... it is melted rocks right? if you put lava in a water, it wont explode, it will evaporate the water.. depending on the volume..

Would be pointless dry ice converts instantly to a gas on heat application. All you would see is just your whole yard filling up with gas and you wouldn't even see the ball or molten metal and since it's so cold the heat would be cooled even sooner.

I'd be curious to see the effects of molten rocks, rather than metal.
I mean, he probably shouldn't have used the term lava and said molten metal instead, and one could argue it's click bait. But I don't think it's very easy for a normal person to get lava for an experiment
That was what I was thinking during the entire video.
