I live in a college town and have a pretty lucrative side hustle to share. At the end of each school year, I go to the dumpsters at the dorms and find piles of furniture that is being thrown out. Typical finds include everything from mini fridges, entertainment centers, dressers, chairs, etc. I also drive around town and find similar items on the curb from students moving out of off-campus housing. Then I take the good stuff (not broken or too damaged) to my garage, clean it up or sometimes paint it. I then resell the items on craigslist and in local shops. This isn't passive income, but a great way to make some extra cash.

Way better than her way! She didn't even show us what her cost was on the items, nor did she show us what other competitors were selling the same exact item for! I've found that's where her "side hustle" falls flat on it's face! No profit. and the competitors are most likely selling the same exact item for about what it costs her to buy it! My findings anyway...and I've researched this a ton! Plus, Shopify is very SPENDY! She showed us the cheapest option, but hardly anyone can use it it's so limited!

For her plain walls and minimalism she has quite a bit off loof and huff, as I’ve noticed over a few videos…so I’m wondering what’s the hustle in this video, too. (I’m suspicious and haven’t watched it fully, yet)

I've done this. It's kind of random how successful you'll be. A lot of furniture gets trashed. Stalking up on mini fridges and air conditioners if can hold onto it until prime selling time works. The downsides are breaking your back trying to move stuff, having space to store things, and digging through gross stuff on occasion.

Same here. There's not a free pile I drive by without stopping, I've had some incredible finds I've sold on ebay. Also, this year I started picking up good condition snow tires from free piles...I live in the NE, and have no problem selling them once the snow starts falling. Keep the faith, my frugal brothers and sisters.

As you proved, setting up a store is fairly easy these days. But that's not the challenge. The challenge is to a) get people to go to your site b) have people trust that site c) Have people buy from you and not a thousand others doing the same thing and simply competing with Amazon.

In my experience with print on demand, even with a professional site and really good designs that people love, you need tens of thousands of followers and a specific type of audience to actually turn a profit due to the razer thin margins.

I do feel this is doable, but US residents need to know there are taxes to be collected from each state (handled by the Shopify platform probably) and you may also have to pay federal income taxes on profits. You will have to keep records (again probably available on Shopify) and depending on your tax ability you may need an accountant. I some US States you will also need to register the business and report sales tax. It's definitely easy to set up but there is maintenance to the financial side that may make this an unpleasant experience for certain people. This is stuff that is true for any US business but a ton of people don't know this stuff and end up in trouble with the IRS.

Sorry to be a killjoy, but unfortunately, here in the UK at any rate, this is what is turning our once lively town centres into very depressed areas, and the only shops opening are the pound shop type operations ,selling mostly Chinese rubbish products. Other than that we have millions of Turkish “ barbers” and Chinese nail bars. Many of these “businesses” are fronts for laundering ill gotten gains….mainly drug money and sex trafficking. Technology has provided us with many benefits, but on the debit side has an awful lot to answer for. Thanks for sharing Nicole , and regards from England.🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸

As someone also in the UK, I too have seen the decline of the high street, and it's interesting to consider the reasons. Increasing rents is the obvious culprit - if you are a small independent store, in a small town, how do you go about increasing your footfall when rents go up? Along with that, stock goes up in price, and if you increase your prices to cover yourself, you risk losing customers. Going online is a 'natural' solution, as you significantly are reducing your physical overhead costs.
I would be interested to know the source that states we have 'millions' of Turkish barber shops, and Chinese nail bars? Also, the evidence that they are mainly fronts for laundering as you claim? Barber shops and nail bars are highly visible businesses, that could be investigated any time. I don't see an uptick in hundreds or indeed thousands of these businesses being investigated for trafficking as you claim.

Turkish barbers seem to be popping up everywhere while all other small businesses are going under. Strange that.
Britain is becoming a dingy, unfriendly and hostile place.

@@End_Orca_Captivity I don't want to call you naive, Orca, given that I have no idea who you are ... but open your eyes and go outside :chuckles:
Or if that is too much, just Google "Barbers Near Me" and then have a look at the business websites.
It used to be second hand resales shops that were the storefronts for washing drug money clean but now it is the much cheaper Turkish Barber and Nail Salon racket.
As to the decline of the High Streets, the meteoric rise of internet trading is the sledgehammer driven nail that killed them. When absolutely no business can survive in bricks and mortar then no High Street is what you get. Even the Continental Cafe craze can't make money when no one has any reason to go to the town centre.

Unboxing side hustles. That's a really great content subject Nicole. I look forward to your next one.
One thing. An online store won't work without marketing. Marketing then becomes the work you have to put in. This is far from passive but it is accessible and, as you showed in your unboxing, easy and low cost to start.
It has risks. Not financial but that of one's time spent on marketing. Without effort their will be no income, and there's no guarantee that your efforts will produce a sale.
You've really only shown half of the unboxing Nicole. A follow up on how much work, aka as time or your life, has to be invested for any ROI at all. Without the work you've lost $2.
Any hustle, side or otherwise is not passive. Effort is always required.
Even passive income mechanisms require management and maintenance.
Maybe focus less on passivity and more on potential and accessibility. Presenting accessible options might help someone struggling to find any hustle, not necessarily a side hustle, to direct their efforts. Multiple side hustles can become a full time business.
One of our friends here in the comments related their refuse salvage, restoration and resale business, which, with the effort they're prepared to risk, is paying a satisfying dividend for them. They've found their niche.
Passive income mechanisms are not 100% passive if you consider the capital accumulation phase of them.
Bring it on Nicole. This is great. Thanks!

This means there is basically no barrier to entry. If this approach is profitable at first, then soon thousands of others will be setting up virtually identical e-stores offering the same products at the same price with the same service all competing for the same finite number of customers.

Marketing an ecommerce company/store is not and cannot ever be a lazy side hassle. You'll need to educate yourself and use different marketing channels and actions. You will also need to do customer service because things do go wrong and often, customers can be very demanding. Furthermore, you will have to verify the shipping options and restrictions of your chosen suppliers to ensure they align with your target market, as AutoDS supports dropshipping from various suppliers located worldwide. If you do decide to open an ecommerce business you'll have to hire an accountant and deal with your tax obligations unless you want to be in trouble. Also, just a reminder, you can't sell merchant with lyrics on, they are copyrighted, people got sued by record companies.

AI and automation have made it incredibly easy to start all kinds of "businesses" and side hustles: you can put up a professional looking website, start an online store, publish a book, start a podcast, etc. in minutes. But with millions of people having access to the same tools, you have to put in a lot of work to be successful. I'd guess well over 90% of online stores are not profitable. Companies like Shopify aren't scams, but I'd guess much of their business comes from selling the dream of easy "passive" income. It's feasible to make money with an online store, but it's far from passive. Nicole, for example, has built up a large social media following so she can leverage that with influencer deals or reviewing products on TH-cam. Building up that kind of following takes many hours though. Paid ads are faster, but you can easily lose money by spending more than you make. No easy paths unfortunately.

    True story.
I worked with a guy that figured out how to do this over a decade ago. (He was a measurement instrument programmer)
He had an online store like this where the product was shipped direct from the manufacturer and he got a cut. Over a couple years he poured every nickel he earned from it into… Bitcoin.
Eventually he cashed in his 84 Bitcoin at about $100 each so he could afford to go back to school and finish his apprenticeship.
    Oops.

Hi Nicole. I’m a 56 yo gal with a 30-yr teaching career and was brought up on a farm, so ‘work hard’ is deeply ingrained in my being. This feels too good to be true, even though I really trust you (as a LONG-time subscriber ❤). I’d love to see a series of side hustles to compliment the videos you have already done. I just have to get over my seemingly-silly fear (yes, fear!) that I’ll get burned somehow by trying to cheat my work-hard ethic! The psychology of this may be fodder for a video as well, as I’m likely not your only old-style nervous subscriber. Btw, how did your Amazon journal do? Any sales? (I know that it was just experiment.) An idea I’d like to explore is one I think you covered in a previous video - money for filling out surveys, and how to maximize the number of surveys per week/month. Not passive, but easy… (I live in Ontario for reference.) Massive thanks for ALL of your videos, and wishing you and Levi a Happy Holiday and a Fabulous 2025!! 🎉🐶❤️💰💰💰😄

The thing is Nicole, what you have just said is anybody can do it, and anybody can do it, but only to get to the level where you are at. You stopped short at a P/L statement from the marketing which you never investigated. That's where the rubber hits the road. If it is as simple as what you are describing to rule passive income, then one person could have a monopoly on thousands of products over hundreds of stores. Then they are screwed because now comes the competition. You didn't make any money off it yet, all you have done is simply building a website.

    • @KOrnhOliO1
      @KOrnhOliO1 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

Exactly! You called it - No P/L! That's the most important part, right?! Drop shipping, what this is, has been around foreva! I researched it a ton 15 years ago and there was no money in it then...not if you wanted your price to be competitive! Amazon is huge, and their price they sell it for is about what the drop shipper charges her! Zero profit!

  • @whysoblutube

I’d say it’d be worth the exercise of creating one for fun but you would need a great product that would differentiate you from the millions of other people on the platform(s) selling the same thing. Also, why should folks buy from you and not the rest of the competition? Stuff like that. It’d be easier to just sell your used stuff on eBay - you’d make more than $100 a day net doing that.

One has to think: If these platforms/services have the merchandise; have the capability to advertise (how they got YOU); have the ability to create websites, process payments, ship items, et.c WHY wouldn't THEY just sell their items, themselves, and keep 100% of the "profit"? (Because there is no profit, except for what you pay them- YOU are the customer here). Sorry toots, but this video is going to ruin your credibility. @@timelessfinancialservices4364 I'll tell ya, I actually made money with e-commerce, 20 years ago (But it's a lot harder now), but it wasn't something that I could just sit back and rake-in money and just send somebody a check to do the work for me- I had do EVERYTHING- from sourcing the products to shipping and customer service, etc. I was working long days, often till 12 or 1 AM. I wouldn't be able to even do what I did then, today, because the market has gotten a lot more competitive, and expenses would be higher, while actual selling prices are lower.
