Reverse while moving in an automatic can be done, but not with a factory auto. With customs valving or shift solenoid commands you can make the transmission engage reverse at any time. Unlike a manual there are no gears to grind, just a band that holds the carrier. Drag racers often have a valving setup that allows them to lock the trans in 1st and reverse at the same time while on the line to hold it still without brakes (called a trans brake). All your power is being eaten by the torque converter and allows the engine to really load up and make boost, open the throttles and advance the timing without risking the wheel brakes being overpowered. Lights go green, you drop the reverse and launch much faster than trying to release wheel brakes.
It's easier to do bullshit things with way less research for more income. It's the money. Sadly, the Entertainment Industry starts to become more industry than entertainment 😢
I was driving 25 mph in my mom's 1972 Oldsmobile back in high school and accidently threw it into reverse rather than neutral one time, and it immediately stopped. I was trying to rev it up to show off.

Most cars with an automatic transmission, even older cars, have idiot protection, which prevents shifting into park or reverse unless the car is at (mostly) a complete stop. Even if you were to override the factory system, it would just trash the transmission. Garage 54 did just that. I recommend that channel for anyone looking for a bunch of Russians doing stupid stuff with cars. And the videos are dubbed in English. And no I am not trying to sponsor them, I think they are an interesting and hilarious channel that any auto enthusiast should watch! As for a manual transmission, well, physics takes priority when selecting reverse. It just can't happen. Same reason you need to hit the clutch before shifting gears.
Thanks for the recommendation! Do you know what would happen if you put the clutch in and shifted to reverse, then let it out while still zooming forward?
@@emilyrln Tori *was* pressing the clutch in during the stunt in the episode and reverse would not engage. It wouldn't actually matter if the clutch was pressed in or not. The clutch disconnects only the engine from the transmission. The transmission and drive shaft are always connected and spinning together. Reverse cannot engage in this way because the teeth from the reverse gear set cannot lock in while the drive shaft is spinning forwards. The teeth lock up on each other. However, if you somehow *could* engage reverse, in a manual or automatic, you would either immediately stall the engine, cause the clutch to slip and burn, or if all else fails, the wheels would actually start spinning backwards while the car was moving forwards, but they would not grip the ground. The tires would just spin and burn out until the car stopped. Either way, doing this absolutely destroys the car. The tires get stripped, the engine could become damaged and the transmission gets TRASHED! This is what happened in Garage 54's video. They overrode the computer safeties to get the automatic transmission on their car to engage reverse while moving forward. It did not actually make them stop any faster. Locking the wheels up causes the rubber to melt from heat from the friction from the tire scraping the ground. Liquid rubber does not have great grip, so you slide a LONG way. Reversing the wheels at speed would make the tires melt even faster. This is why ABS (anti-lock braking system) is a feature on almost every vehicle nowadays, and has been for decades. The system pulses the brakes REALLY fast, like 60 times per second, allowing the tire to rotate slightly before braking again. This prevents one section of the tire contacting the ground from melting and losing traction. It also allows much greater control of the vehicle while braking hard. When the tires slip and burn out, you can't steer and the car's direction is out of the drivers control. You can actually try this yourself. On a clear road, with nobody behind you, get up to speed, about 40-50 MPH, and slam on the brakes as hard as you can. You should hear a grinding sound, and the brake pedal should vibrate against your foot. Don't do this often, as it is bad for the car! You wear the brake pads and tires extensively by doing this, but every once in a while, especially for an emergency brake, is what the car is designed to do. Every once in a while won't hurt anything. But that sound and vibration is the ABS. Aaaaaanyway, I hope this answers your question!
I feel like before they called the "reverse stopping a car" myth busted, they should've tried a 60's or a 70's car. Maybe it didn't have that safety feature like the Crown Vic had to prevent engaging the gear.
I had a 61 Chevy with Powerglide 2:speed trans. I would wind it out in first gear and move the indicator to Drive and it would sound somewhat like a straight shift. One day I came up the street on my way to school and done the first to high number showing off. I hit the lever to hard and it went clear in reverse!!! The back tires locked up causing a sudden stop, with much laughing from my friends!! I put it back down in drive and it moved forward to the parking lot but felt sluggish. It felt like the brakes were dragging so I took it to my Uncle mechanic. He told me to go see his transmission man. He drove it and told me I had busted a thrust washer between the second and reverse gears causing the dragging!! The transmission had to come out and disassembled to assess damage. I asked him without going in give me an estimate. Between 5 and 6; hundred $. I asked for an estimate for putting in a 3 speed on the floor. He said around $400. I borrowed the 💰 from my Father and was happy with the results. Within 6 months I blew the 283 up and bought a 327 short block which ran good. Obviously there is no lockout on a 61 Chevy!!
The reverse "myth" actually WORKS in an automatic Jaguar XJ6. I know because I was in one when it was done. The Jag engaged reverse quickly and smoothly, starting the rear tyres spinning backwards, and slowing the car dramatically. The gearbox was totally fine.
I guess it depends which car it is. also, the manual car test wasn't really it. Tori didn't seem to push the clutch in when putting it in reverse. I've seen a video on TH-cam where someone did it with his manual 1995 ford ranger, and it DID work, tho he almost spun out due to the sheer opposite force it used.
In the summer of 1977 a high-school acquaintance, Harvey, bought a 1967 Firebird. Cherry car; known one owner, mom at home full time. Harvey, the second owner had the car for a few weeks. On the fateful day he was passing a group of us in a 35 zone. He put it in reverse while still rolling forward- result? The driveshaft escaped the front universal joint, pogoed off the pavement and tore the rear suspension mounts. Harvey did NOT deserve that car. We saw him as more of a Dart or Falcon kinda guy. Peace. out.

Snowflakes, cancel culture, the good old days etc. In some instances, shows can say way more and talk about more topics than they used to be able to.
