As a Taiwanese and a road cycling enthusiast, I was truly touched by this video. I've ridden almost all the routes on your trip in the past few days (except for the section from Lishan to Yilan), and these routes are very popular and well-known among Taiwanese cyclists because of their spectacular scenery. Thank you for capturing Taiwan so beautifully. But as you said, the roads in the mountainous areas of Taiwan are very winding and narrow due to the narrowness of the land. And it's ironic that Taiwan is known as the king of bicycle manufacturing, but the cycling community is a subculture that is not emphasized. As a result, the majority of automobile and motorcycle users care even less about the rights of bicyclists on the road. I'm also a little ashamed to have made you feel uncomfortable... But I'm glad you're willing to enjoy the beauty of Taiwan! If you get a chance in the future, you can also ride the Hualien-Taitung route, which is also known for its beauty. I hope you have a safe and smooth trip ahead!!
Many thanks. Terrific account. By far the best from Puli. And the only one I've seen to Yilan. There are plenty from Hualien, but that isn't a practical ascent for many touring cyclists. Too tough. This will be very helpful to those considering Wuling.
Amazing! I appreciate you taking us with you on your adventure. Love the mix of pov shots, phone over the shoulder shots and drone stuff, really lets us experience it as much as we can on youtube XD
Love these videos. I've only cycled around the northern tip of Taiwan, but exploring further. Must admit I've learned to be cautious and often stop if I hear a bus or truck coming up behind me, especially if it's a narrow road. However bad the drivers are here, the bus drivers are worse.
Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I will be visiting Taipei at the end of the year and can’t wait to do some cycling while I’m there.
I'm really looking forward to riding in Taiwan in a few weeks time....your video shows us all the beauty and challenging riding , thank you for carrying all the kit to make and share your adventure
Quite alot of gears u are carrying.. & simply awesome scenery! The later descending was WOW.. when u gonna stop..😆 ride safe bro.. thanks for sharing. 👍🏽😁
I just stole your route, and I'll start off this sunday. I made it 5.5 days (i'm not very bike-fit for hills atm and wouldn't mind a chill pace). Thanks for posting the route and video! Maybe we can ride somewhere sometime! 💪
Super Nice Views! Thanks for taking us along! Very beautiful area your riding thru. Now you have been in Taiwan awhile how would you say the riding/roads/views etc there compare to Chiang Mai or Thailand in general? Thanks again for the take along
@@JohnnyZeeLee Training for us was in previous decades...These days just the beauty of cycling is what we appreciate. In some ways I wish I had back many of those years of rushing everywhere head down trying to beat some silly previous best 😉 I wonder about all the beautiful sights I missed heheh
Great video! Will be visiting Taiwan and doing a bike tour in Dec. Your videos will help in a lot of the planning. Love your emphasis on safety. Many vloggers tend to overlook that aspect. The Silex must be new. Thought you had Revolt previously. Do you use a portable bike lock when you go into convenience stores? Lots of expensive equipment onboard your bike.
Great video! I actually only found it because im planning this route starting sunday but reconsidering with the typhoon and now lookijg at Mae Hong Son Loop and found your video on that first! Now i wanna do both 😂
If you’re planning to go Sunday, I recommend starting the first 2 days and then waiting out the typhoon in Puli. The effect of the typhoon should be mostly ok on the west side of the island. Definitely don’t go to Wuling during typhoon
Love it! 🎉 I was planning to do something similar in April ‘25 (but including Alishan & Sun Moon Lake). Alas, I have to postpone it - hopefully April ‘26.
The bike check will be a separate video. This one’s already so long. I’ve never ridden Ang Khang and Inthanon I have only gone up the main road. I think Wuling is tougher but having said that, I’ve only done Inthanon once and it was a long time ago. Also I’m comparing riding a loaded bike up Wuling to a lightweight race bike up Inthanon. It’s hard to say
love it Johnny, thanks for sharing. im planning to do this in November 2024. My first time. I'm from Sydney. Please share any advise/tips if you wish. I will be hiring all my gears. I have been cycling for 20 years. fitteness is ok. cheers
You just rode part of the Taiwan KOM Challenge course (Wuling) which is arguably the toughest climb of the world. You got some decent descending skills there.. and yeah, cars do not mind taking up over the double yellow lane with full gas which is ignoring as f**k. If you ever want to try riding with diff groups instead of Liv, you can try roll with the PNS guys (Pas Normal Studio) from AB group to racer level
I would suggest you yo go check out the east coast! From Hualien to Taitong to Kenting to Kaohsiung then take the HSR back to Taipei. Also go checkout the Sunmoon lake!
I just did the tour of East Taiwan. It’s an event that goes from Hualien to Taitung and back. Really beautiful. Also seen a bit of Sun Moon lake. At some point I think I’ll do a longer trip to go see kenting
Hi John great videos on your youtube channel I like to ask you do you know if its possible to cycle direct from the Airport International Taiwán Taoyuan to Taipeh or do we have to take a train will arrive in 3 weeks for a bikepaking trip thanks Dirk
I really don’t know. I know for sure you can ride from the area where the airport is located into Taipei but I don’t know how it would be trying to ride a bike out of the terminal. It’s a pretty big airport. I can say, if you don’t mind taking the train, it’s super affordable. Good luck
...it's fine. You hammerhead can't tell elevation. My 1050 said it ran out of memory re-routing, turned it self off, forgot that it's a cycling computer and eventually recovered...telling my to turn right regardless of the direction i was heading.
I 100% agree with you. As an avid motorcyclist also living in taiwan, the mountain roads are full of those idiots & jackasses driving their oversized SUV in the MIDDLE of a road in a blind turn/corners. Jackasses, them lots.
@@JohnnyZeeLee well in Taiwan you can pop in a 7-11 eat a meal and charge all your electronics… in Southern California mountains you have 1 restaurant every 40 miles lol.
we visited Taiwian because of your posts, great place. abolsutly loved riding there. Stayed at VIA hotel. Great choice
Love that!

I think for training, Chiang Mai is still one of the best places in the world. However if you’re going for views, Taiwan is better

The Silex is new! Don’t use a lock ever for quick stops at the convenience stores. It seems ok to do that here
this makes me want to retire in Taiwan when I am 90 and do lots of riding.
When you thought cycling in Taiwan couldn't be moar amazing.

@JohnnyZeeLee decided it was too much risk. Have just rebooked my flight to Chiang Mai! Arriving Saturday
Do you have a video about how to carry camera and film. Any recommend, I see you also carry big camera right
Love it! 🎉

Nice vid, It would be nice if you included a bike check in the vid. How would you compare Wuling pass to Inthanon's backside or Ang Khang?

Just remember what I said about the rest days. And maybe don’t try to have such long days as I did. Every day is a climbing day 😂

I’ve ridden with PNS many times. Good group of folks over there
Cool..if you notice in their rides, whoever carries a bulky 2kg SLR camera is the fastest guy of the day..

Are there any campgrounds 🏕️along this route you just finished riding?
I think there are but to be honest I wasn’t really looking for them so I’m not sure.

That sucks…maybe I dodged a bullet. Def was considering 1050
Did you put an ND filter on the acton? The downhills look so much faster with the blur
Yes I use nd filters with my action 4

Did you switch to the Karoo 3?
I did. The 1040 had a damaged USB port and I could no longer connect it to my computer to load maps
@@JohnnyZeeLee I use the Karoo 2 only complaint is the battery life. But I just carry a little power bank on long rides.
