Hello! I’m Shoyan.
I have been working as a carpenter in Japan for 50 years and am a licensed architect and technician.
I would like to share my work, knowledge, etc., regarding Japanese carpentry.
I hope you enjoy my videos!

"Dad, aren't you going to do the voiceover for the new kitchen trim?"
"You want it changed, YOU DO THE VOICEOVER!"
His silence was deafening 😂
To me it's the hands of a master but the grey colour choice was jarring. Either way, better with a Shoyan plaster than a prefab.
@@artfishal6691if it was British it’d be everywhere
To the son: Be grateful to your dad. He put in a lot of extra work to do all that. Never forget the work he put in for you.
The look on his face tearing it out, did not look thrilled
"Blame the person if they get injured" Agreed!
I love that!
Maybe a decision made after he had to remove the gray headboards
That comment was everything
came here to comment that hahaha - that's a pro level carpenter right there.
"I wasn't involved in choosing the color"
I felt that one, I'm sure your wife and family will be happy with what they picked you to do
His remark was funny and I am sure it translates to everyone's language.
I remember him saying that he caught a lot of flack for the old yellow tile lmao
I learned long ago to say “ I don’t do colors,I “just “ install them 😊
Is plaster more resistant to being damaged by earthquakes than other forms of surfaces? You mentioned plaster on many occasions, and I know that plaster is a highly specialized form of skills, requiring years of building up to finishing expertise.
Lmao, he's still a little salty about the shit he got for choosing yellow tiles for their previous kitchen LOL
Blame user if injury, refuse to add commentary after losing argument 😂 I love you Shoyan-san 😊 ❤ Shelf design looks modern and zen at the same time. That show some unique style of carpenter that usually added to their works. I liked it. 👌
Holy shit, the part about the family argument = brilliant!
Everyone piling onto poor old dad, so relatable 😂
What I wouldn't give to learn a trade from someone like Shoyan. You show love in your work, sir.
I’m so invested in a kitchen that I’ll never get to step foot into. The internet is awesome 😄
right
Did you not get the invite?
I just love watching this entire process. He takes such great care in every detail. Well, except for the space above the cabinets but that turned out just fine. Those two shelves next to the door are beautiful and so practical.
This is my favorite series so far. I'm really enjoying the bits about how things were built originally vs. how they would be done on a new construction.
Regardless of color, your masterful touch still shows sir. When our families are involved, it is often better to pick and choose our battles.
Hi Shoyan's son. I can't speak for everyone, but I love hearing your voice in the videos.
Lol at the family fight! Nice to hear son again.
7:23 is my favorite.
I love the look of the kitchen. Grey is such a *happy* color!
it really fits the modern persons souless sense of aesthetics.
😂😂 hilarious. This is definitely got to be my favorite so far.
Loved to watch your carpenter and renovating skills, it turned out wonderful. Lots of choices and decisions to make, very relatable. You'll enjoy your new space very much❤
bloody beautiful work.
Some great progress there.
I liked the grey that your father chose.
Anyone else secretly in love with the few music tracks that populate all of Shoyan’s videos?
🥰🎶
At least one of the tracks is by Chris Haugen - Morning Mandolin
th-cam.com/video/V0bxY-vPuYU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GLCC8ZdKWZA6aQTr
Yes. The consistency is comforting, for some reason.
"Morning Mandolins" is my favourite. It is available on TH-cam.
This gentleman (master craftsman) would be a great asset to a trade school anywhere in the world!
I think you had the color right but im also sure it will all work out in the end.
love the son taking over for the color change part. lol my family is the same
Those planers are so freaking smooth and sharp. I wish mine were half as good.
The new kitchen units look lovely! I am sure with the finished plaster the whole room will look amazing! I love the beautiful live edge shelves!
The small window above the sink looks really nice.
I love the pink tape measure. That's a real man
I hope you and your wife are happy how it's progressing. Thanks for the video.
Always relaxing watching a craftsman do an excellent job.
It’s coming together nicely! I used to be a kitchen installer, and it’s interesting to see that the installation methods we used in North America are almost identical. For framing and carpentry however, there are many differences! I enjoy seeing the different methods in action, I think I learn a lot from each video :)
As a renovation carpenter myself I personally think having plaster above kitchen cupboards looks nicer as it gives the "floating aesthetic" however what people seem to overlook is as the years and decades of wear occur plaster finish areas especially over stovetop/appliances that give of oil and moisture does not age well being much harder to clean than a smooth laminate or hardwood finish. My preferred solution is to have the cupboards run almost to the ceiling with just the cornice or moulding run above eliminating the need for the infill.
But this renovation is looking beautiful! Thankyou for all the uploads keeping me entertained whilst I'm off injured 🙏
Hell yeah new videoooo
Thank you for letting us accompany you in your journey. Can't wait for next video of finishing the kitchen.Thank you Mr. Shoyan.!
Love to see a strong family like yours, keep up the great work
It is starting to look amazing once plastered and painted the colour off the kitchen will be the centre piece. 😀👍👍👍
First time seeing Shoyan looking pissed .,! I’d like to see the plasterer work, usually here the plaster work is all done first before before fit-out. Thanks for the video 👍
Beautifully done as usual. The top closure having the same finish as other walls is most common in the US as well. Much simpler to get things the way the family wants during construction than later :-)
Refusing the voiceover made me laugh out loud. Your dad is just like any other dad in the world. 😂
Shoyan. There’s a saying “Happy wife, happy life” 👩🏻❤️👨🏻. Sometimes you just have to take one for the team😃 👍🏴
I swear this guy is my favorite TH-cam
He and Kaziya are mine!
@@WesFanMan. Who is Kazia? I follow this account because it popped up one day and I became engrossed. Another similar channel?
Especially love the trim work using Cedar
Looking beautiful
I can see why Dad wanted to go with grey instead of plaster. Will have to wait until the kitchen is finished to see how it will look after it's completed
Nice upgrade. Was hoping you built the cabinets instead of buying readymade ones!. Keep the posts coming, enjoy them all.
what a humble guy you are, and utterly skillful. Pleasure to watch
I enjoyed this video a lot and I think that your renovation looks fantastic . The shelves look excellent in my opinion and the narration on this video was very entertaining. Thanks for sharing
"I think it's ok to leave the corners as they are and blame the person if they get injured."
Thank you for your service 🫡
If I was Shoyan I wouldn’t do the voice-over for that part either! 😂 But to his credit he did make the change to your family’s specifications 😂 I guess he had reached his limit.
I appreciate how well thought your work is done.
Fascinating! I've never seen a kitchen installation like that. Here in Canada, it would take a cabinet installer, appliance installer/gas fitter, plumber and counter top installer to do all that but instead only two guys did the whole thing. Talk about efficient.
Families are fun to do work with. The gripes are just a part of the process. I once had a customer give my Dad and myself a huge smile. I asked what she was smiling about. Oh, she said the way you two politely bicker at each other reminds me of how my dad and myself worked together. She said she really missed her dad. It was sad and comforting at the same time. :)
You’re an amazing representative for the trade my friend!
To watch you work is a treasure as one can learn so much from you... 😎
My favorite Japanese carpenter! (The only Japanese carpenter I know of) but still, my favorite.
You are an amazing individual buddy!!!
Looking very nice.
It would be nice to do a video with the plasterer. Id love to see how its done in japan.
A wonderful channel, thank you for sharing!
😂😂😂😂 “had a fight” don’t blame you there!
I know I am 2 weeks behind for this series but personally the gray actually looked good
Looks gorgeous!
hi Shoyan!! very nice work😀
HAHAHA Well one of the advantages of getting a team agreement, is when it goes bad... you can say, "Well, we made a bad decision." Which is much better than being blamed. Love your craftsmanship.
i need the next episode
Awesome
Love your work, A true master of your craft.
I think tying the part above the cabinets to match the walls will end up looking better, the kitchen area looks very, gray, being all the same shade / style.
hi Shoyan and his son! haha thanks for another inspiring video. good luck with your continued efforts in the kitchen, it's beautiful!
People doing things they know how to do, that's what people who know what they can do and what they can't do as well find when they know they aren't as good 👍
Edited to add "Welcome back Shoyan Junior 👌"
I think the color went really well with the cabinetry and backboards... but I guess it depends on the final color of the walls in the end. And I was thinking, (with the assumption that the walls will be some kind of white) having that very top strip as grey MIGHT make the kitchen area isolated from the rest of the room.... but if it is the same color as the wall that may tie it all together 🤷♂
I guess we'' just have to wait and see..... but every thing is turning out BEAUTIFULLY!!!!! :) GREAT WORK!!!
enjoy your new kitchen!
aaaa been waiting for this
I enjoy your content very much. Thank you.
I'm sure that it will turn out beautiful in the end.
I don't think that anyone advised Leonardo da Vinci to use a different colour, or even said to Katsushika Hokusai 'That's the wrong colour for a wave!'
It is always so great to watch a real Master at work! Thank you for another fantastic video.
It is a beautiful transformation from old to new. The new cabinets look great also. Too bad you weren't making videos when you first built the kitchen. That would have been interesting to see also. Stay safe.
you have a very special kind of taste - but i think they should let you have this since it's hardly noticeable and you are the one doing the whole kitchen
Most important lesson in life that I learned. I can make an decision but the color of walls, cars, etc...
Nice job.
10:20 - Shoyan Son! Dont be sorry, its good to hear your following your fathers footsteps also!
Shoyan-san, I love how whatever you do its always accurate and appealing. You are a true craftsman. However I have to agree with your wife and son regarding the trim above the cabinets.
Very nice. Could you show the plastering process?
"The family all decided this color was terrible" It's the yellow tile all over again.
The yellow Boards will be plastered ant painted a diffrent colour.
Thank you for sharing. I love the cabinet selection. This kitchen is looking sleek and modern.
joli travail
the kitchen looks smaller, but in my opinion it looks way better than it originally did, and definitely not as dated
Shoyan you chose the correct colour to match the darker cabinets. Sorry you lost that family argument.
Shoyan-san, the beautiful work you do is a LOT harder than installing the kitchen...
Did your wife say - "no yellow'? :)
Hello from Romania!
Tearing out the grey strips is the largest error I've seen on a Shoyan clip :)
funny petty fight, I agree with the rest, wall color should look best (unless wall is also grey LOL)
The light gray color was awesome, you're just bullying this old man 😞
ah yes, grey. the color of.....sorry but I
cant even finsih this comment its so bdafdsbvxvghx
Shoyan-san: I didn't pick the color for the kitchen
Shoyan's Son: Oto-san, we literally had a whole discussion and this isn't what we agreed
Was not expecting drama in this series, what a delight 😅
Your Dad did pick the yellow tiles, so i get the intervention. I'm sure the grey would have worked, however, grey works for everything.
Not the first Japanese space where they build the stove right up against a wall. That gives me such the willies. Even in my very first starter loft home, there was a 12 inch cabinet separating the FIRE SOURCE from the wall.
Boy oh boy you go above and beyond on everything and leave corners unfinished under cabinets. Guess ok in japan but fire code anywhere else. Thanks for your videos.
👍👍👍
I am so sorry to tell your family, your are wrong . He was right. 😊
Naa, the ugly yellow above the cabinets is wrong. Shoyan-san, you were right with the grey.
I trust an expert builder over some bad opinions of other people. Thank you for your sacrifice
It will be white plaster later.
That kitchen was not what I was expecting, it's smaller but maybe that's all you really need .
Agree. A Kitchen island would be nice to complete the kitchen.
😊😊😊😊😊😊
13:02 you upset Mr. Shoyan, so he closed the kitchen!
