    Lyrics:
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me
Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away
Change and decay in all around I see
O Thou who changest not, abide with me
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness
    Where is death's sting?
    Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me…
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me
Abide with me, abide with me

@@plusultra7258 A song is beautiful regardless whether it is British or Indian. One judges it by the effect it has on the listener and not necessarily by its point of origin. If so, giving a contemporary analogy, why is the song 'Jamal Kudu' a Persian song, popular with Indian audiences?

It is basically a song about death. It is a Christian hymn to be precise. In the British military system, the song signifies a devotion to mark the end of a routine day's work. The song particularly marks the end of a soldier's life, meaning that his/her life's energies are totally spent to the fullest extent possible and there is nothing more to give. The fallen soldier can therefore be allowed to rest for eternity. Immediately after this song is played, another follows calling the living comrades to action stations.

The Chalukya empire, VIjayanagara empire, Satavahana empire and the Maratha Empire also reigned in India for roughly the same amount of time (200-300 years each). Tell me..is one more Indian because it is Hindu and the other less Indian because it is Muslim??
Even though there has never been a Christian conquest in India (no Christian empire)..it has thrived in India since the Gupta Empire..EVEN OLDER than the arrival of Islam in India (3rd, 4th century CE). Is it less Indian because it is not Hindu?
I am not saying India is a Muslim or Christian nation. I am more than willing to call India a Hindu nation because Hindu culture and traditions are unique and indigenous to India alone and I am proud of it.

It's a plea to God to stay with them (and to give them strenth/comfort) and although written in a Christian context can have meaning in any faith!
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me

But this song doesn't represent our homeland even a bit. It was imposed by foreign and not composed by native man...

    Nice hymn❤❤....
But what is the point to play it in our Gantantra divas... It is a Scottish tune. And the fact is that now we are independent... We have a great tressure of tradition, culture and music of our own. We all are proud of it.... So why to use foreign tune.. Some of the peoples think it as an insult of our custom... But I think they aren't mentally independent by now from slavery of foreigners..
Sorry if it hurts anyone..... 🙁🙁🙏🙏 I don't have any intention to hurt anyone....

I don't think that an Indian "nationalist" would remove a hymn that calls for God to dwell with us. This is not the vision of Hindus like Swami Vivekananda. Instead, this is a road that leads to nowhere.

@@Nammachannel1822 "Indigenous" is not as apparent as it might seem. India's culture has been continuously evolving (without destroying its roots). Furthermore, even if one would argue that certain things are not "indigenous", it does not mean that they cannot have value for us.

First of all, I respect Christianity in India. The change in the song was not intended to erase Christian identity. It was meant to promote local and national cultural values over foreign influences.
The song "Abide By" is indeed beautiful but we need to understand, Many Indian Christians believe that the British came and saved us, thinking we were drowned in the darkness of the caste system. They don't realize that this was greatly exaggerated to destroy our local identities-not just Hinduism, but also tribal cultures-to weaken and divide India.
If everyone became Christian, it would have been lot easier to rule them. So, they started teaching hatred and anti-India/culture/religion narratives in our books. NCERT still teaches this. The psychology of our beliefs is shaped by what we read in books; we believe it without questioning its authenticity. This is called "Brainwashing from Beginning".
If you were converted to Christianity, perhaps from your local tribal culture or another religion, thats fine, but please understand that many people who underwent such conversions, like Kerala Christians and others, changed their religion but did not lose their identity. They still prioritize their local culture over British influences, such as their attire, food, music, language, and many other aspects.
The reality is that the British caused us immense harm. Next time someone says the British saved us or gave us railways, question it. Who provided these? It was actually us, our hard work, and our own money (taxes were not paid by British citizens). If they did 1% good, they did 99% harm. Why do people always forget about the great famines and other harms? For one moment, please think about the people who sacrificed their lives to rid us of British oppression.

Colonialism and spirituality are not the same. Christ sacrificed himself for the good of sinners and taught people to turn the other cheek. Colonialism is the antithesis of this philosophy. This hymn asks God to live with us. It's not even explicitly praising one specific conception of God again and again. Swami Vivekananda's Vedāntic pluralism should be kept in mind. His 1893 speech in Chicago remains as relevant as ever.
And yes, colonialism was evil. Many Christians I have talked with have openly acknowledged this. At the same time, it is also a fact that Christianity did not arrive with the British. St. Thomas came to India much before that.
