  • A pensioner in B.C. is currently homeless after a hospital stay that lasted longer than expected.
Rhonda Elliott of Penticton, B.C., 69, says she went in for colon cancer surgery on Feb. 3, with the operation happening six days later.
The South Okanagan resident claims that complications ensued, and she wound up staying in hospital until late March. After being discharged, she returned to her apartment, only to find it had been cleaned out, with her possessions having been relocated to a local storage company.
“When I got out of the hospital, I went to go home and found out I didn’t have a home,” an emotional Elliott told Global News on Tuesday. Taya Fast has more details on her situation.

When it comes down to it , it should have never happened in the first place. Doesn't matter who is or isn't better off. She's asking for a helping hand & she deserves one , just like everyone else who paid into society & was simply born. Doesn't matter where you come from or what you look like ,we are all children of God. That's deserving enough in my own personal opinion.

If they packed up her apartment that quickly they obviously didn't go through the proper channels in having someone evicted, it takes a few months to get an order of possession and have a court bailiff change the locks, and same with her bank account, pension payments are usually directly deposited. Something is missing here.

This woman is in an absolute terrible scenario. My dad was declared dead and didn’t even go to a hospital. He didn’t know until his pension cheque quit coming in. It took two months and a ton of frustrating phone calls to bring him back to life. If there is a go fund me account please let me know. You have no idea the government bureaucracy involved to bring someone back to life. They all think you’re dead

Isn’t this why we have social workers in hospitals? To check in with people and see if they need the most basics of support? SW: “Who takes care of you at home?” P: “I’m on my own” SW: “Do you own or rent?” A five second conversation. Perhaps she was to incapacitated; in that case, SW should have looked for an emergency contact. No emergency contact, gee, well-guess I have to do my job!

Something sounds off to me about this. It's the closing her bank account that doesn't sound right. Many people actually pass away and their bank accounts stay open for a very long time. In fact the government has a website that people can look up unclaimed money from loved ones because the banks did not know a person has passed away unless a family member tells them and even then, it's not that easy to do.
