- In March, 73-year-old Cheryl Menise was forced to leave her home and start sleeping on her sister's couch. Her landlord had raised her rent from $850 to $1395 per month, and she couldn't afford to pay.

Why is there no affordable housing in these towns for seniors? You can't miss them where I live - every town should have a Housing Authority for this type of housing.
@Sudhir Kakar There are lots of companies that provide retirement programs for their workers and lots that don't. Millions of people go into retirement with just social security - which is rarely enough to pay market rate rent.

She should have bought a house when homes were cheaper like back in 1975 homes were affordable back then in L.A. county. Im 70 i bought my first. home after i got out of the Army in. 1971 homes in carson calif were cheap 3 bd rooms going for 30,000 and up.i bought my first home it was a 1 bd room.for 15,000 my morgage pym was 200 .00 a month then i moved out of L A in 1985 i now lived in a home 4 bd 3 bath home i pay 350.a month im buying my home im retired too God bless me ots a nice area too close to the mountains

My mom was a narcissist split my race and personality as a child then hid it. but I would let her stay with me but live in a semi homeless shelter in NYC. Sometimes you just need Togo on a show and a bunch of people will help with people they feel a bond with. I do with her but we’re in the same situation

@@m.thomas8819 My sister worked her entire life and died just after turning 62. She was a career gal that never married. She worked her way up and lost ALL of it!! She lost her job (company went out) when she was 58 and no one wanted to hire her. Her 401-K and savings had taken huge hits during the recession and only lasted her 2 years or so. She had no health insurance left and got cancer. The ONLY reason she didn't die on the side of the road homeless is because I took care of her! Her daughter didn't care. So, you don't think it couldn't happen to you??????? P.S. That huge upper-middle-class home was sold to pay off her debts. It was all for nothing.

I've lived in L..A. since the age of 5 and I can honestly tell you can literally see the income inequality every single day. Other than the weather I don't know why anyone would want to move out here. In addition to the high rents, there's the high price of gas and even higher taxes. It's a truly sad state of affairs. One that I would never think I would see in my lifetime. Thousands of people are being forced out of their homes and into their cars. There is no middle class in this city. In San Francisco, people who work in the city have been forced out because of high rents and now have to commute into the city which can take up 2-4 hours. Can you imagine that? Being forced out of your apartment and you now have to commute 4 hours to a job that probably would have taken you 30-40 minutes because you can no longer afford to live there. This is the new America.
California caters to rich people and do nothing for middle class American citizens. I just dont understand why more of them dont move, if they have a car...drive!

And now with the opening of the new LA RAMS stadium in Inglewood, the long time residents of that community are fearful of the inevitable gentrification of their which undoubtedly lead to the increase in rent. More and more people are either being forced to flee LA to more affordable nearby cities or moving out of state altogether. There are so many people living in their cars because they can no longer afford their rent. It’s really sad because it’s happening to hard working Americans. People who actually played by the rules.

I'm from Chicago and live in the burbs now and it's happening here too. We need rent control across the country. My condo mortgage is cheaper than the rents. They just built an apartment complex down the street where the lowest rent is $2300 all the way to $4800! I feel bad for these people this is so sad
Its not just happening in the Metro areas. I live in rural Missouri. You used to be able to rent pretty cheap around here. $250 for a 2 bedroom house. Now days that same 2 BR is renting for $1250/mo.
However, Here in New York, what they are Paying would Be a Drop in the Bucket in Comparison. You cant even Get ANYTHING FOR 750-1150- Studios START @ 1750, and that's The Hood .

Now, here's the thing: what's wrong with living with relatives? That's what family is for, to help and support one another. That's how most of the world works, at least traditionally.
Blood is not thicker than water. Relatives may have nothing in common, may be nasty, noisy, etc. Sounds like a nightmare!

The problem with living with relatives are many. Different Generations like lots of company. They like to smoke and drink and they keep up too much noise. Sometimes relatives don't clean up behind themselves. It's just so much simpler and quieter to have your own place.
I have a great relationship with my parents and they can always live with me if they need to. I lived with them for a while. The roles can reverse! Lol
My parents passed away within 18 months of each other. My brother coerced my father into redoing his will, after my mom passed, while he was grieving and sick with cancer, to give him full control of the assets. I received nothing. That is fine because my brother and sister will get their karma. Point is, they are greedy and wouldn't help me if I was on the road, dying. And I have done nothing wrong. Family can change quickly when money and being humble is involved.
This is truly a cautionary tale to the young about the importance of home ownership.
You're not secure in home ownership, either. All it takes is a property appraisal at a higher rate and you'll pay higher taxes. Surrounding structures can increase your property/ home value, too.

Home ownership means nothing if you don’t own it flat out. A job lost can cause you to fall behind on your mortgage and then you’re out in the streets. A lot of people had houses and lost them due to a vary of problems.
Yep, if they dont get you in rent, they will get you in increased property taxes.

I was in Oakland a couple of years ago and all the seniors I met were planning to move to Las Vegas/Nevada because of the rents.

My biggest goal when my husband and I settle on land to build our forever home, is to have enough land build a 2 bedroom back house. We Will need an 6 bedroom home, and the back home will be a 2 bedroom versiob of it. My grandmother will definitely live there. We Will stock her fridge. I try to get her to move in now. But she too busy living her best life😂😂😂

Same here in England it's against the law to raise rent by more than 50% in fact government actually trying to bring in a law that prevents private landlords from raising their rents by more than 5% _ 10% per year. You cannot evict a tenant for being 5 days late in arrears. Unbelievable that this system exist in America so unfair.

Even when ads are posted online saying they are when I call the GM's say they actually arent and corporate posted the ad. I never would have imagined atlanta would be like this. It's so hard here to find work. Lots of desperate people. Really, really desperate.

Shes lucky to have that. Shes not truly homeless. I have been living in my car for 2 1/2 yrs. Daughter diagnosed with leukemia and we lost everything. So here I am. Me and my dog. End of this month my vehicle will be gone too....

This isn’t new although it’s sad , I was 25 when I realized I no longer wanted to fight the fight and live in Boston. I’m 27 now and have a great life in a southern city with many north transplants

DING DING DING we have a winner folks.. rent increase up to nearly $1000 /month or more than doule , it is no wonder people are homeless. it should never have een allowed in the first place. It is a global crisis. Seniors and veterans homeless Just like mental health as there isnt any resources or affordable care..., this leads to self medication with drugs etc...Highest teenage suicde rate ever with kids being left as prey to the sickest people online/offline and left as targets to human traffickers. Yet there isn't any action y governments , oh wait yes these people are arrested if they set up camp anywhere. It is all about the mighty dollar and politicians spend tax dollars on everything BUT the people who paid the taxes.
That would only make it worse.
Many people have no family, not a child, parents long gone, friends who don't want to know them because they don't want you on their sofa, what happens to those elders? This is so sad.

I hate to say it but thank God for 2008. We were able to buy a foreclosed home for 150,000, 5 bedroom. Our mortgage is 1200 a month. If it weren't for the housing crash, we wouldn't have been able to afford a home. But I did feel bad for all of those that walked away from their homes or was upside down in their mortgages.

This is hard to watch. My heart breaks for those struggling. This is greed and one day, one day it will be too late for those at the top to fix the mess. They will be left to face the crap that their greed stirred up. There is such a thing as karma, payback, justice or however you want to call it.
Even in 2019 going into 2020 the problem persists and seems there is no end to the lack of affordable housing. However, the resources are out there as well the funding. You just need to do your “Home”work and pray.
This has taught me that you need to buy and own your own place so you don’t get shafted by a landlord when you get old. Bc rent only goes up and when you get old your income goes down.

Actually this happening with people who own their homes as well. As the neighborhood gets gentrified home taxes sky rockets and seniors on a fixed income start losing their homes they lived in for over 30 years. That's sad.

You can't do those those types of rent increases here in Canada. In Canada, specifically where I live in Ontario, the landlord can only increase your rent by 4% per year by law. If the landlord wants to increase the rent more than that they have to justify the increase because of expenditures related to property development like adding an in-ground pool, or renovation the waiting area. They can't just raise the rent just because they want more money.
Landlords should be able to increase the rent by any amount.

I hardly ever raised the rents. When & if I needed to I raised it $100.00. I thought that was a lot, but I really needed to. I would never have raised someone's rent $500.00 to $600.00 more per month even though I knew I could. That's cruel to do that to people.
Rents are still escalating in Canada. Toronto and Vancouver are unaffordable for the average wage earner.
