I know. It should have been a no brainer. He was 18 and made some very poor choices partly because of his youth. But he was also a psychopath who attacked a young girl with a shovel and a knife. He is where he belongs, and so is his deranged female friend.

Just because kids can be violent and dangerous doesn't mean they are equal to an adult. They will always be more vulnerable and naive and easier to be taken advantage of. Now I think about all the dangerous situations I put myself in. Back in my younger years I didn't think nothing bad could happen to me. @@SpanishArmadaProd This is why you have communication with your children and help them learn to establish their own boundaries. So, they will know the reasons why someone would suggest using a burner phone and the way it lets someone get away with exploiting them. They can be aware of consequences and choose for themselves not to have a burner.

    • @-Reagan
      @-Reagan ปีที่แล้ว +10

This. It’s important to monitor your children’s online activities, and it’s also about helping them establish their own boundaries.
      That’s the TL;DR
They have to know what to say online or what to keep private, including displaying neediness or vulnerability, and how it attracts predators looking to exploit them. They should be reminded regularly and we need to have conversations about things like this - to impress upon them the reasons why it’s so dangerous.
We need to teach our children that it’s a big red flag for someone to push their boundaries or try to get around them by pressuring or manipulative tactics. Our children need to be able to recognize unspoken signs and signals that indicate someone’s intentions. They should know when their boundaries are being threatened, what to say to protect their boundaries when challenged, and what to keep private or express only to close friends and family.
Offering them another outlet than the internet or us as parents for expressing their feelings, and a way to give them privacy to express themselves is also important.
I know it must have been very exciting and flattering for her to have the attention of someone online - particularly a college athlete. She might have even believed she was being smart to meet him in a public place that first time. She probably thought she was avoiding the dangers of being catfished and that she could rely on her own judgment to protect herself. She didn’t know that the red flag was already there.
I don’t believe for one minute that he didn’t know she wasn’t 16/17 before they met. He would have immediately known how different their levels of maturity and experience were. They had nothing in common for any kind of relationship. He would know what a girl her age wanted: attention and a boyfriend. She had no experience to agree to a sexual relationship or even understand how that might affect her. He knew very well that he was in control, that it was a complete imbalance of power.
She probably didn’t know her very inexperience made her so vulnerable. Or that he was enjoying that, preying on it to get what he wanted.

This is why you HAVE to have those hard conversations with your children! My 7 year old already knows about sexual abuse/pedophiles because as horrible as it is for a child to know about that stuff it's straight up negligent in my mind not to keenly inform them of every possible red flag. He knows exactly what to do if anyone ever tries to do something to him or lure him somewhere and understands that no matter what they tell him, it's not his fault if an adult makes him feel uncomfortable or is being inappropriate towards him and I'm certain he would feel comfortable telling us so we could help him but only because hes been made aware of all the ways an adult might try to manipulate him. If someone had spoken to this girl candidly about what could happen to her if she ever trusted a total stranger than maybe she would have been more aware of the signs of a predator.

      @curiouser-and-curiouser ปีที่แล้ว +37

Oh here we go with the supercilious guardians using the story of a child's death as an opportunity to share with us why they're a superior parent. This may shock you but most parents teach their children about potential predators & the harm they bring, this is common sense. You're supposed to teach your kids these things. However, not many parents are willing to risk damaging their child's mind by telling them what sexual abuse is. Telling them the places they shouldn't be touched & that strangers can take them away & hurt them gets the point across. Young minds are not ready for that info & it could generate confusion, shock, fear, panic, disgust, curiosity, fascination, guilt, misunderstanding, & lead to very bad mental health.
You wouldn't know whether or not her parents "had spoken" to her. If you think a teen with image issues is just going to stop talking to boys online just because she's told of what could happen then you might find yourself in this situation, God forbid. To think that these kids are completely clueless about how dangerous it is to meet people online is foolish. Grown people know & still do it. She certainly knew what she was doing was wrong. You can preach to them everyday but if parents don't monitor & limit their activity, this happens.

@@BornIn1500 it's a confidence thing, but there is more than that at play. This one was hard to listen to because I was this girl when I was about her age, and unless you are this character in the story, it's very hard to understand the mindset. Her home life didn't sound all that bad, no outward abuse, but the kids at school probably weren't gathering around her in groups to get her autograph. You feel isolated and lonely when everyone else is getting lots of friends, talking boyfriends, doing cool things on the weekends, and you...aren't. You aren't all the confident because of how you look or how you act, and all of a sudden here is someone that doesn't judge you, that wants to talk to you about your day, that makes you feel like you are the best part of their day. The messages might not even be sexual, they might be friendly, and that friendliness keeps coming. Soon you feel prettier, happier because someone accepts you, likes you, and life is starting to feel pretty good. Then they start professing love, and you might never have seen this person you're talking to, or maybe you have, and you start falling head over heels. Nothing else matters, because this person makes you feel all the things you want to feel. Then they want to meet, and your heart is going a mile a minute and you can't wait and nothing is going to get in your way of meeting this amazing person that you are sure will take care of you, cherish you, love you and give you all those things you ever wanted. You're not thinking rationally, you just want to meet this person. That explains all of the things she took with her, down to the blanket.
I met a 45 year old man on AOL chatrooms (you know, the A/S/L days) back in the day. He lived 2.5 from me, made his age no secret. I told him I was 16, thinking I was cool. I was 14. I don't remember if I ever told him the truth. Our 'relationship' was over a year before my parents found out, and they never would have found out if I hadn't given him the landline number, and he called right in front of my mom. NEVER sexual in any conversation, and no pictures. Ever. We had no idea what each other looked like. That was the day my dad called the FBI. My own story never got further than that (I'm typing this in my mid-30s and its surprising how much I remember of this event). Only thing this guy ever lied to me about was apparently his age, and he was 49. Yes, he was still a pedo, and no, just like I told the cops when they told me his age, I still didn't care how old he was. Because the conversing with him was giving me so much more than any interactions with my parents, who couldn't be bothered with me. But he was still a pedophile, and he knew what he was doing, and apparently I wasn't the first. Now that I'm older, I'm so glad my parents stepped in.
Until I heard this girl's story, I thought I was the only one. This guy was a pedophile, any way you slice it. He was in the wrong in that as soon as he saw or had any incling at ALL that she was under 18, he should have stepped on the gas and never looked back. Never met her. But he didn't. He wanted to play the "oh, but my reputation!" card, but he still did what he did, and then when he didn't want it to get out...that poor girl had everything ripped away from her without hesitation, and that poor family was left suffering the whiplash from it all. 😢

It breaks my heart bc I was just like her at that age. I just, luckily for me, was never found by a predator like she was. Probably because I was born in the early eighties, so social media and cellphones weren’t mainstream yet. Just so sad. Rest in peace and love, sweet Nicole.

She thought she sent the online girl a message but sent it to me instead. Then we opened up a can of worms we had no idea about. All this girl did was prey on our daughters low self-esteem and struggles with body dysmorphia she knew exactly what to say and that was it. I have a niece who fell victim to online predator aswell. Zero clue she was talking to an adult for 3 years!!! These kids are smart they know how to hide a lot and when a predator gets in to their lives they teach them how to hide stuff more efficiently from everyone online is the predators play ground 😥

      I hear what you're saying.
      But prison isn't a cakewalk.
I've heard it described a lot like serving in the military 24/7, except without the pay. Or like slavery. Every aspect of your life is controlled on some level. It's a lot of "hurry up and wait".
Not "Hell on Earth" but not somewhere you want to be, ever.
And they will be in prison the VAST MAJORITY of their lives (without parole.)
She will get out when she's 60, and no sooner. He will get out when he's 70, and no sooner. *IF* they survive, they'll only have a few short years of freedom.
Ideally these people will learn the suffering they've caused and suffer in turn from that guilt.
If not guilt for the lives of the family of the victim they murdered, guilt for their own lives which they've ruined. Guilt for their own families.
And know that's where they actually should be. And know they can never really make it right.
Non-existence would be preferable to me than living like that.

All I've caught so far for the place this happened in is Western Verginia. I'm only a short way into the video so far & it might be mentioned later, but if not, can I please ask what town this took place in?
I'm very sorry to hear of this terrible crime and that it happened where you are. If it's a somewhat small town it's already deep in the psyche of everyone there. When people hear of crimes like this it's easy to overlook everyone else who this has impacted. Of course family and friends immediately come to mind but often not those who have always been around throughout the victims life, in the peripheral. I hope the healing is well underway for everyone there, although all parents of these types crimes against their children aren't afforded that gift that with the passage of time lets them heal easier as their loss & pain runs too deep for any meaningful healing to really take place, until many years later, if at all.

My sister-in-law worked in the Montgomery County DA's office when this case happened. This was one of thise cases that REALLY hit her hard. That ends up being extremely hard on the entire family because they can't discuss the cases with anybody but you can SEE it weighing extremely hard on her & it just got worse everyday.
If you know anyone that works on processing & prosecuting these cases make sure you periodically check on them. Even if they tell you they're good give them a certificate for a spa day, offer to babysit so they can have a date night or anything you know they would really appreciate as a way to decompress.
Holding in what they can't tell you is just as hard as actually seeing it for the 1st time & working it daily.
That's why I think it's easier on my Aunt & Cousin. They own a mother daughter Cadaver & Search Dog Kennel. When they work a case they always work it together. Being able to discuss it with eachother is a HUGE mental help for both of them.
