Same reason I play any scale, to make rhythm. I often play chord changes as one note shots over certain strong beat notes in an improvised line, this helps me better understand the phrasing. I haven't tried this with the diminished scale yet though.

I'm most certainly going to write this lesson in my tab book. Whenever I learn one of the lines you are teaching, I usually write two or three more. I've got the Jazz way of thinking so well now that I can go over one of your lines and know how to present it without having to review your video. I can't honestly say that I totally don't need your videos anymore, but I can't afford the Gigabyte TH-cam video usage anymore. Perhaps in the future. Thanks for all your help. Sincerely: Damon Shanabarger

0:29 I'm sure they were not aware of that. Back in the year 1985 1985 1985, we all had to learn somewhere I declare, I'm not the only one, but then again it is a matter of perspective. Only those that could become one with the tree could always see itself. Nobody else could see it. What is now is not infinite to some, yet still now seen. 20 is four. Cat, Rabbit, Little Me. "No man has seen God at anytime, the only son in the bosom of the Father, to him God has declared him."

It was 1985 when I saw her on the Metro Train. She said: "I love you Damon. Damon I love you. Damon, Damon, I love you Damon. I love you." She said that continually for several Metro Train Stations. At last I looked back at her. Tears ran down her cheeks. She appeared to be only a year old in her stroller. I think her parents were diplomats. I got off at the Silver Spring Metro Train Station. I haven't seen her since. Tiger, Bugs, and Little Me are asleep in their own corners of the Cube Space Time Continuum Universe. Uncle what's his face reincarnated to New York City. I heard she died last March on the news. I never liked Uncle what's his face. What's four? The Twenty Spirits that dwell within the twenty black holes of the Cube Space Time Continuum Universe are what's four. Creation is a matter of perspective is a lie unless proportioned one moment to the next is being created. To say created something that has always existed the same history is the Devil in the details. There is nothing created.

Jens, you unlocked the diminished scale for me. Realizing that the same scale, a 3rd apart, just created huge freedom. I always could "see" this when playing keys, but this really unlocked a ton for me on the guitar. That coupled with the awareness of the triads is huge. Just had a ton of fun just playing over a single chord dominant vamp!

Top notch quality as usual, Jens! Patterns can certainly be difficult to deal with, more so the shorter ones (like, four note patterns), because they are so easy to spot. I really like how Jonathan Kreisberg makes them work, (I mean he has A LOT of patterns under his fingers) he creates this very rich sheet of sound kinda thing that fits really well into his style

    • @JensLarsen

I take jazz guitar lessons and I complement them with your teachings - thank you! It was an "ah ha" moment when you broke down phrasing using triads vs. just seeing a diminished scale that moves around in minor 3rds.
I'm also practicing from the book "Melodic Rhythms for Guitar" (Berklee Press), and I see a number of their rhythmic patterns in your phrases. It would be interesting to have a lesson(s) on common rhythmic phrases in jazz, i.e., ones to get in the pocket to improve the swing, syncopation, etc.
Thanks Jens and have a great holiday :)

I really like the concept of combining the major and minor triads that you can derive from diminished. One issue I have is some of them imply other sounds if you don’t hear them in context. For example if you play the Bb major triad, unless someone is comping a G7. Behind you, it sounds like you changed the chord to G-7. It’s obviously much more effective though if you combine the Bb triad with one of the other triads such as the E triad etc.
Allan Holdsworth also has a hilarious lesson where he talks about how boring the diminished scale sounds, so he has to “jumble” up the notes 😂.

    • @JensLarsen

Im trying to figure out how to superimpose the diminished scale, especially the major triads derived from it, in modal situations. common modal harmony like minor7, major7, dom7 in the blues and sus chords. i think, i hear that pretty often in a more weird, modern context. one idea i thought of, is to use the half whole dim. scale of the V chord of the given chord, but it's really hard to create melodies that make sense, maybe it's just the wrong approach. Would really appreciate an answer, or even a video on that topic! thank you, jens! :)
