    Worst thing that ever happened to me was with Strixhaven: two senior students were demonstrating their abilities to impress the freshmen, and one of the players just went, "I bet he's the leader of an undead cult in the school." Nothing dangerous or ominous had even happened yet, and the only thing about the student that had been revealed was that he was very confident.
    And yet, for all practical purposes, the senior student in question was, in fact, leading a vampire cult.

      That;s when you determine that the senior is leading the cult, but HIS boss is a professor pulling his strings from behind the scenes. So the player turns out to be right, but there's a twist. Also, bonus if the professor seems like he's helpful to the PCs...though being too helpful may be enough for a smartass OC to guess the Professor is evil.

Now, if you instead made it to where every time you Verbal Component a spell your voice is amplified or has an ethereal effect put onto it, that would allow one to identify it as a spell and still allow the caster to be versatile with a spell like Vicious Mockery and Silvery Barbs.

    • @faselfasel2864
      @faselfasel2864 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      @@scribesorcerer4967 It wouldnt. Vicious mockery is strictly a bard spell and their verbal components would fall under a completely different casting paradigm. Silvery barbs on the other hand can be used by bards, sorcerers and wizards so that would make identifying the spell harder for people not of the same spellcasting class. (At least at my table). A sorcerer would distract different though than a wizard or a bard, but they are still bound by the casting paradigm of their class, which would make it identifiable.

    Divination Wizard 2/Clockwork Sorc 2/Fathomless Warlock 2.
    This build could cast Silvery Barbs 11 times before a short rest, 3 more after the first short rest, and 2 more per short rest thereafter. It would also be able to negate advantage or disadvantage 3 times per long rest, and could choose the outcome of 2 rolls per long rest.
    Meanwhile, the warlock side uses Repelling Blast and Lance of Lethargy to potentially knock back a creature 20 feet AND reduce its move speed by 10 feet, while also having three tentacles per long rest to potentially reduce the movement speed by another 10 feet.

    Had never heard of Silvery Barba before Marsha used it in Critical Role and immediately I was like "oh that is stupid powerful." I just assumed it was a warlock subclass thing or something, I didn't realize it was a level one spell!

      The opportunity cost is high for Silvery Barbs since you can't cast Shield/Absorb Elements or make an opportunity attack in the same round. Powerful, but only when you can negate a crit or something similar to that effect (in a social situation, everyone looking at you would know you cast a spell [RAW] even though it's just a verbal component).

    Spell only having a verbal component to cast doesn't mean it isn't visually evident.
    This is a super important idea, since it both means you visually describe stuff like a purple shard of light piercing an enemies head when they get hit by mind splinter...
    And stops people from "sneakily" casting everything. Some spells it could work with. Maybe even allow an arcana check to control some of the visuals. But...not invisible.

    • @Kylora2112
      @Kylora2112 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bingo. Everyone who is aware of you can tell you cast a spell (maybe not which spell, but they will know you cast *a* spell). Otherwise, Subtle Spell wouldn't need to exist. They *know* you cast some kind of spell. Which is why Silvery Barbs doesn't work well in social situations (and because of the opportunity cost, shouldn't be used in combat unless you're negating a crit or something because losing your reaction for Shield/Absorb Elements, or an opportunity attack can be huge). Silvery Barbs is a balanced spell. A *great* spell, but a balanced spell.

    The way I see Silvery Barbs is that the verbal component is something actively attempting to distract the target, so it'd be quite obvious if you were using it on someone, and just as obvious you were interfering in another persons duel if you then actively try to distract one of the people in it. The thing about spellcasting is that it is always clear you're trying to cast a spell, that's why metamagic's like Subtle Spell or psionic spell effects exist that remove verbal and somatic components. You can't just try to roleplay that you're trying to be sneaky at casting a spell and expect it to fly.

    I started playing a Strixhaven game with a True Neutral Wizard. One of the players was randomly stacking chairs, in an orderly manner, in the study hall and got reamed by an older student for it. "That level of aggression is unnecessary..." I cast Minor Illusion, passed a Deception check (to conceal i was the caster) and he failed the DC, and the NPC spent time until his friends came in trying to unstack Illusionary chairs.
