    From 1966 to 1979, our "Big" tractor was an Oliver 1850 gas. My Uncle had a John Deere 4020 diesel as his "Big" tractor. I loved running them both, but preferred to run the 4020. It was like running the Cadillac of tractors. Loved the style, Loved the sound.

    I really never had a favorite John Deere tractor and over the years and over the years singing and watching all the different ones I finally decided that the 4020 is my favorite John Deere

      Jimmy Strain I’ve upvoted but there was this tiny voice in my head reminding me of the JD 4050, which can not and should not be forgotten when talking about the best JD ever made.

    I love the look of that rops and canopy on these 4020s. My grandad had a massey Ferguson 275 with a similar looking rops canopy on it and this look just brings back memories even though they’re 2 completely different tractors

    The 4020 is definitely a legendary tractor, no question about that. Seems as though everyone and their brother has a 4020 for sale today, and they are proud of them. A quick scroll thru Craigslist or the marketplace will yield you many more 4020s for sale versus an 806 or 856, at least here on ohio.

    The fact that those Iron Horses still runs today on a small & medium size farming operation, 55 years after production, shows something!! They were made to WORK!! Simple & Strong Iron Horses to work the fildes on a reasonable price & low maintenance costs.

    Thanks again, BTP. The closest tractor I used close to the 4020 was my Paternal Grandpa's 3010 gas burner. It seems like that engine was a 6-cylinder. Neither one of my grandpas were into diesel tractors at all... I tried to get them to buy something like a diesel Farmall 560

    • @mauricemartinez1489
      @mauricemartinez1489 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Holsten I thought 3010’s were gigantic compared to my first tractor I drove, which was a JD 420. My biggest problem was forgetting to put my sweeps down starting a new row. I was 10 yrs old. My last tractor - JD 4955 four wheel drive. Retired now.

      @@bigtractorpower Yep, we had a Farmal 400 with a belt drive and a straw blower we filled the hay mounts with, ran that into my teens... The 560 is still on the farm, one of my favorites... thats what I was stuck with on 6 row cultivating every summer... we row cultivated corn twice and soybeans 3 times if we could... and walked the beans, we had a seed business. When I was a senior in HS I bought a CASE 1175 and a 12 row cultivator... LOL!!!! showed them.... hahahaha!!!!

  • @craigsimon935
    @craigsimon935 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    While you are talking about drills we always used what Dad called a press drill which did not have wheels on the ends but had two wheels up front and then a press wheel behind each row to pack the dirt around seeds. We always used JD drills because they had large diameter (approx. 30" diameter) as compared to other brands which pulled easier and rolled over clumps of plant residue and rocks better.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would like to film a press drill some time. I saw a John Deere 60ft John Deere 9350 press drill in Montana parked at a John Deere dealer. I recently saw a 15ft IH 620 press drill at a local auction yard. They would be beat to film if I could find them running in the field.

    We had the same outfit on the first farm I worked on. Every spring we planted oats and alfalfa with it. We used a cultipacker behind the drill. The 4020 was a Syncro range diesel with a narrow front. This farmer like to plant by starting on the outside of the field and working our way to the middle.He wanted the hay mowed the same way so he wasn't traveling on the headland without mowing. We also had a 4020 power shift diesel. I will be trying to buy that tractor soon.

    There's lots of that kind of seed drills in use in Finland, 3pt, semi-mounted or drawbar-versions, locally made brands.
    I think today most common type seeder sold in Finland is machine which have many small wheels next to each other on the rear of machine and it's like roller behind seeder, but in one machine.
    Like this one:

      We used our 4020s for just about anything. Including hauling manure in the winter and picking corn. On cold days I would warm my hands up on the muffler. We didn't need GPS because we knew how to plant a straight row. Back then we cultivated too so you had to be precise. That skill is just another one fading away because of technology.
