    Today we look at the production and transcription of consonants in English. There is a lot in this video, and there is no way you can grasp it all in one go. Please take the time to study the IPA chart, and do your own practice transcriptions.
    Old video. Updated video in the playlist on the channel.

    In nasals, the velum remains lowered. If it is raised, it will block the airstream to the nostrils.

    Thank you so much for your extremely useful videos ;) I stumbled across them by accident. Moreover, I am so happy that I can refresh my knowledge about phonetics&phonology just cliking on your videos, because I had this subject on my first year, and as time goes by I can't keep everything in mind. The only one thing that I would like to add is that when you are talking about places of articulation, dentals are missing.Anyway, well done, and keep on in the same pace 😊

      +David Morris It will be continued eventually, once I have some more time. My harddrive crashed (losing all files) midway through the series, so losing assets/lesson skeletons was a little frustrating and I wasn't prepared to remake them so quickly.

    The glottal stop is not the sound between the 'uh' and 'huh'. Rather is the sound at the beginning of the word: the popping sound when you say 'uh'. I think you were confusing 'uh-huh' for the word 'uh-oh' in which case the glottal stop is present both at the beginning of the word and also where the hyphen is.

    Great video! Thank you very much! Just be careful if you are working with the RP (received pronunciation) as there is in fact a difference between 'post-alveolar' and 'palato-alveolar'. The /r/ is a roll, part of the Liquids, which is voiceless and its place of articulation is 'post-alveolar'. The /ʃ/, /ʒ/ are fricatives, the /ʧ/, /ʤ/ are affricates and there place of articulation is 'palate-alveolar'.

    Glottal not in "Uh-huh" but rather in "Uh-Oh" and sometimes replacing the T, most notably in some UK dialects, eg. "glo`al" (glottal), "wa`er" (water) and "be`er" (better).

    The manners of articulation of the consonant sounds /m/,/n/, and /ɳ/ cannot be stops, because when lips are closed, the air passes through the nasal cavity.

    • @Trevtutor
      @Trevtutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The air is stopped from escaping through the mouth. Instead, it travels through the nose, making it a nasal stop.
