- DERBYSHIRE DALES PARISH #16: ASHBOURNE
Ashbourne - “Ash Tree Stream”
Deep in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales there lies a town with an ancient tradition, one which sees a crowd take to its streets for two days of the year, to watch a football match like no other you’ve ever seen before. That town is Ashbourne, nationally famous for its annual Shrovetide Football game, contested between the Up'ards and the Down’ards.
It’s a place with a rich industrial heritage too. It was here where Nestle produced Carnation Milk, in a huge factory. It was served by a railway line which ran to Buxton, but only a handful of clues that remain to its existence.
So with lots to cover, lets get cracking.
