Thanks. My portable MD is : MZ R91 which I love. My Sony MDS Deck is MDS JB 940 which I'll try and replace as I broke it. I always LOVE my MD's on a plane. Fantastic sound !

I have ten or eleven different models from this list, some of them in three or four different colours. I am not normal. These are very likeable and beautifully built machines. They look futuristic, but with an obvious level of nostalgia. It’s nice to have a physical format and not to use a computer or smart device to listen to music.

I'm getting my first one from eBay soon. What are good ways to store the MiniDiscs? When I look at them they are still so futuristic looking. Like something out of a spy movie!

Awesome format, far better sound and build quality than iPods. It should never have been abandoned by Sony after all the development work they carried out. I still have and regularly use four full sized Sony decks and around 40 Sony portables including LP2, LP4 and Hi-MD variants. The Sonic Stage software often gets criticised but thankfully I have had few problems using it. Long live MD.

    • @EllasPOSEiDON
      @EllasPOSEiDON 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Slightly better than mp3 or aac but still worst than CD. The format lived as long as it should. Period. Better quality format (flac) and memory based players won the market.

wtf ipods have a lot better bulid quality. walkmans are mostly made from one material, metal or plastic, while ipods are aluminum, stainless steel and polished plastic

@@username-tq9ke They really don't. How many iPods have batteries that burst the screens? It is a major hassle to replace a battery in an iPod too requiring spudgers and dumb luck.

@@EllasPOSEiDON Rubbish, MD was making significant gains in compression quality with ATRAC Type-S, as well as releasing innovations like Hi-MD, which could use lossless files. If development had continued, then FLAC encoding would have been taken advantage of, at least halving the lossless file size (or Sony would have developed a FLAC equivalent). Connectivity with computers also had the potential to be greatly improved. MD was held back by the ineptness of Sony's marketing and pricing, as well as their stupid DRM.
All I know is all four of my MD players (2x portables and 2x decks) are still working, while the three memory based players I have owned (2x iPods, 1x Samsung) are all dead from failed screens or hard drives (and bulging batteries).

@@woofowl2408 Did I say MD didn't have capability? No. It had, but It didn't reach its peak. We can speak theoreticals but what matters is what really happened. MD never had cd quality so it was always worst than CD. Evidence is out there. The players, the tools, the discs can all be in tip top shape, I got it. But they didn't represent good quality.

I love MD player. They were important to me in my youth and teen years. I got a good one which was then stolen by a drug addict selling it for drugs.. only last year, almost 20 years later I got one again out of Nostalgia and I love the thing. I got a MZ-R500 for 30€ but it was so bulky, runs with a single 1.5v battery which is impressive but the bulkiness really annoyed me.
So I got a Sony MZ-R300 with remote in pristine condition with charger for 90€. Immediately bought 3 of these flat rechargable batteries for it on amazon for 5€ each.
Now due some luck/unluck I got 2 more. I wanted to buy a big MD player for my stereo but transit with UPS damaged the display.. so as a replacement I got a KENWOOD DMC-G7R (didnt even know Kenwood made MD players!) and a MZ-R55 in good condition with working remote (thanks to the batteries that one will work as well.
And I got a ton of MDs still from back in the days partially..
Now I have the Kenwood working as my Stereo. The pristine one I use for when I'm listening to relax at home or record via the optical cable. The MZ-R500 is being used in my car which is just a fantastic feeling... I don't know what it is but self-recorded MDs feel so much better than just listening to stuff on my phone.. I drive 50000km a year so I can make a lot of MDs... I still have the craziest MDs.. books on them.. radio dramas... mixtapes.. best off.. and the quality is so much better even than I remember... God I love these devices.. I really should've gotten one again asap but well everyone was so into MP3 players and I bought into that hype... and on the other hand not having had one for so long only makes it all the more enjoyable now that I have them again.

@@pleasetakecareoftheearth7627 There is no need to append an ‘s’ to the end of the year. e.g., ‘1998s’. This is poor punctuation.
If a unit was released in 1999, just state the year as 1999.
If you are uncertain of the year, but you believe the year to be around 2000, describe it as: 2000(?).

It makes me really sad watching this because this was Sony at the height of its innovative and creative digital powers era (CD,MD,SACD,DVD,DAT,BLU-RAY)
I started my journey at the beginning with the MZ1 followed by MZR3. In the middle with MZE75 and then at the end with MZ-NH1 and MZ-RH10 & MZ-RH1❤
I think you've solved a 30-year mystery for me. I had two MZ1 both would produce disc errors when trying to record past 60mins onto a 74 minute disc - I noticed you stated in your summary that it will play back 74 minutes but only record 60!😯
If only a few of those "home market" machines had made it into Europe and the UK 😭

With so many MD lovers popping out on the market and the old users still present vastly around the globe, I do hope SONY will come to the conclusion of reviving the device. Especially so that the best proof of this device longevity is the very fact Mini Discs are still produced…. Nintendo revived some of its products and it was sold out… SONY will hopefully follow soon…

I pray for this almost every day, that Sony will revive this format, Came across this format when I went to UK as a student in 2000, bought a Sharp minidisc portable with a remote which also had a display bought it brand new for 160 GBP. Needed a portable sound device since I had to take 2 busses and 3 trains to get to my University, amazed by the device and the sound quality, i started to exploring. I bought so many discs and recorded on them. Hard to find good Quality machines these days. I came across a Yamaha MD4 in mint condition. Also bought a Sony MDS-JE 920 few weeks ago for insane price of $250 from Japan and its on its way to me. How I wish Sony would bring this format back, never a fan of digital media, always loved physical formats such as MD's, DATS and Cassettes.

I'm confident that if Sony produced an ES hi-MD home deck it would sell out.
Sony we need a resto-mod division for all the failed OLED based MD screens and battery sticks - that make some of these units inoperable without.🙏🙂

The amount of technology, design and innovation Sony did just with the MD is unbelievable. Companies like Apple nowadays produce the same device for 15yrs and barely change anything on them. Its amazing how even after 20+ years there are still MD players and disks available so we can enjoy them. What new electronic device that you buy now is gonna last 25yrs?
