TWA, L-1011 takeoff (exterior & interior) & flight PHX to STL 1991

  • First seen is an outdoor shot of a Trans World Airlines Lockheed L-1011 TriStar taking off from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX). Then, we're inside a TWA TriStar enroute to St Louis (STL) from PHX with push back, engine start, taxi, takeoff (to the west then turning to the NE) and finally a tid-bit shot of what seems to be an educational type of movie shown on board the aircraft. Video recorded on March 24, 1991.

    Lockeed sure built a great plane. This video is a great example of how the L1011 sounded during takeoff. Loved and miss that experience. I wanna note, I use to work for their GDS, and had to travel frequently. The GDS was owned by Delta, TWA, and Northwest, so I was primarily traveling on one of these carriers, and with TWA and Delta having the most L1011s, I was on them enough to notice differences. One being, Delta's L1011's were noisier during takeoff, in-flight, and landing. It's as if Delta paid less by not better sound proofing their cabins. I've sat in various locations on each, including business/first, and noticed overtime. However, Delta kept their planes and overall operation looking more up to date.

    Brings back memories of flying good ol' TWA AND living in Phoenix! I couldn't see the old original 'Terminal '1''. Back in 1976, I would go to 'Sky Harbor', get into terminal '1'. And right before you got to the 'Delta' 'Continental' & 'Frontier' desks; there was a staircase at the left that said "Observation Deck"! You could go up the flight of stairs & be on TOP of the building!! They had telescopes for a quarter. I would stand up there for hours, with my shirt off catching the desert rays in late October & November, & spend a roll of quarters, just watching planes coming & going, and people getting off on the tarmac of old terminal '1'! (Terminal ONE didn't have air bridges) Does ANYONE ELSE remember that from Phoenix? The days without all this security!

      I never got the chance to visit that observation deck at Phoenix. Thanks for sharing your recollections of what it was like to view the planes back then. Talk about great aviation memories!

    Damn I miss the widebody trijets! I grew up in Europe, and we did not have that many L1011s, but we had alot of MD11s and DC10s which I also flew many many times. Got to see a few L1011s thru my childhood tho, but never flew one 😩 But damn all three aircraft types have very distinct sounds. This L1011 does not sound far off from a MD11 especially during spool up and takeoff.
    Thanks for this vid, love inflight vids from an aviation era gone. Reminds me of a simpler time, and a much more diverse time with regards to aircraft and airlines. Oh the childhood memories.

    I flew commercial airlines from 98-2011. I flew as a passenger on L1011s several times and really thought the aircraft a great overall experience. I was based at CVG and frequently flew to STL and ATL. Both Delta and TWA operated the aircraft. Lost my medical in 11 due to lower back surgeries and a movement disorder. Miss flying as it was my first choice as a career. It’s great and sad to see theses old videos.

    Now that was a great aircraft. Lockheed-Martin is making so much cash with the F-22 and F-35 they can afford to built some aircraft not covered by Boeing or AirBus. If SuperJumbo sales come back and slots get tighter and harder to get I can see a need for a 275-320 seat wide body as well as a long distance 180-220 seat with two/three engines, to replace 3 trips with the 737 or 320 families. Boeing had to eat crow and tell us YES they DO need a 757 replacement, the 737-10 MAX won't cut it. I hated to see TWA and PanAm die, they were the best flag carrier's we had. Nice shots of Phoenix's filthy air, it's much better today, to a large extent due to LA cleaning its smog filled skies. Really a great video for people like myself going to school in the late 70's living in Phoenix

      Lockheed does not know how to stick to budgets....it's why the L-1011 failed miserably. The only thing it is continually successful at> is robbing the American tax payer with many false promises for DOD stuff that does not always work or not delivered on time, etc. as promised.

    • @bobbypaluga4346
      @bobbypaluga4346 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      D McNamara Amen to that, we should have stuck with the F-22 and updated the fighter. The F-35 was to be adaptable to every force unique use, a carrier based aircraft, a land based bomber, and this commonality would save us lots of cash Didn’t happen the cost of the Program is $1.5 TRILLION this includes no future expenses.

    • @dmcnamara9859

      4-Engined Jumbos are a thing of the past. Airbus loses some serious $ on each A380 delivered.....and Boeing has just barely broken-even on the revamped 747-8. With so many 747-400s nearing retirement (and quite a few moderated cycle used and well maintained);20 Million or so is all it takes to get one converted into a Freighter....so the 747-8 will limp along with very few new Orders for at least 10+years. And with Boeing so desperate for 747-8 sales, a freighter will run about $150,000,000......much-much less than it's suggested retail price of 375 million. Latest news, Boeing may re-start the Passenger 767 line...as United is in talks for 50-100 767-300ERs with winglets. Being that there is no Current/NEW plane that can fly 200+ Passengers efficiently and profitably for 5000+ miles even with outdated engines....bringing back the 767 Passenger looks promising. Boeing is a fool for shutting down the 757 line then, Meanwhile Airbus keeps getting more and more orders for the A321 Neo....a Market Boeing said 15+years ago did not exist. The 737 needs a new Wing with greater range capability and to shorten takeoff distance...or Airbus will continue to dominate the 200 seat market for the Single-Isle Moderate Range(capable)Market. But seeing the Cost over-runs on the Max, the Dreamliner, and Upcoming 777X, Boeing seems to be making huge mistakes one after another. FYI, depending on whose numbers are truthful, the break-even point on the 787 Program is somewhere between 1,300-1,500 Airframes delivered.

      The DC-10 and L-1011 were actually designed for that in addition to trans oceanic flights. In the late 1960s, the growth of domestic aviation seemed endless, and these were seen as larger capacity 727s. They could fly in and out of airports like LGA and DCA.

    ghost of flight 401 movie with ernest borgnine is available on youtube. I have never been able to find out whether the installation of a unit related to control column/auto pilot was the cause of the auto pilot mismatch. My understanding was there was a situation where the control yoke could be moved in advertently and disengauge the altitude hold only and not the entire auto pilot system. The captains was able to disengauge at a diff pressure then the co pilots.
    this mismatch where the altimeter was frozen on the side where the auto pilot was first set and the other side reading true altitude was a problem. Was that a standard thing or unique to this plane that crashed in everglades.. Never able to find out for sure.
    I remember there was a warning bell or light at don repos flight engineer station that was critical but sadely he went down in the hell hole to check if nose gear was down and locked and had trouble in the dark...

      @@WAL_DC-6B You are correct. In fact The L10 routinely used reduced power take off to save fuel. It also could direct climb to cruse altitude. The DC10 and 747 had to step climb to reduce weight to climb to cruse altitude. I was signing off a write up at departure. The captain told me to hurry that up. He wanted to push back before United.
