The Cars are the greatest band ever! Easton is the greatest guitarist of all time. Period. Orr was the best male vocalist ever, with maybe the exception of Elvis. Ocasek was the best songwriter ever. Hawkes is actually a world renowned ukulele player and his use of keyboards is second to none.
My favorite 5 Cars songs (in order) are:
      1) All Mixed Up
      2)Candy O
      3) Everything You Say
      4) Bye Bye Love
      5) You Might Think

The Cars produced one of my favourite songs of all time. I believe it can stand alone as one of the greatest rock recordings ever. And it's not on your list... the song is 'It's All I Can Do'. My understanding is it may not have been popular amongst the bandmates, but damn it's a beauty. The perfect example of how each member contributes to complete The Cars package. Ben's vocals are emotive with longing, the guitar string effect building the tension, the big drums hitting your chest and keeping the beat, the keyboards sweep with such beauty and power, and Elliott drops the most proficient and creative sweeping solo he may have ever recorded... right into the pocket, backing vocals are on point, and almost forgot to mention the brilliance of the fade out at the end of the song. The call and response of the guitar, from one ear to the other. Brilliant! So good. Certainly on a level up high on their very own. The Cars are a treasure.

Album for my stereo and 8 tracks for my car. So many memories of teenage and college years. One of my most favorite bands of all time. Got to see them in concert in the 90’s at the Richmond Colliseum I Richmond Va. Every single song they sung in concert and on their albums was a hit to me!! Not one bad song in the bunch!!!

The Cars were my first "favorite band". They showed up right when I was looking for my musical identity and they fit perfectly. So many great songs-- I loved the hits. I loved the B-sides. I loved the deep cuts that no one else got into. I could never compile a 5er I'd be happy with, but I can list a bunch of perhaps underrated or widely-unknown songs from them:
"Panorama" from the album of the same name-- Despite some "not so great" production on this album, a lot of the songs on Panorama are killer. I love the energy of the album opener. And the video is Beastie Boys "Sabotage" before it was a thing.
"I'm In Touch With Your World" from the first album-- Maybe not unknown, but I think under-appreciated. No samplers back then-- this song is total studio fun-housing, with timpani, foley sounds, and that weird whistle that goes "ffffwwweEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee!"
"A Dream Away" from Shake it Up-- A trance-like drone song that always transports me back to being awake way too early in the morning, walking around outside in the pre-dawn mist.
"It's Not The Night" from Heartbeat City-- Really liked this song and wasn't sure why it didn't get more airplay (was it even released as a single?). The live performance of it from their Houston show is really great. Notable for the fact that it's one of the few Cars songs that features Ben and Ric trading vocal duties during the song.
"Think It Over" from Shake it Up-- It's got one of those signature "weird Cars sounds" going, which I love. The song itself is totally catchy, if a bit repetitive. I never really noticed that aspect until I got older. I just grooved on the... groove.
My answer to the question of "What is your favorite Cars song?" will always be "The entire 2nd side of the first album, in order, uninterrupted. As God intended."

I just watched the last interview all the original members of the Cars did right before Benjamin died. It was both great and sad at the same time. David Robinson did mention that their first album cover was not his (their) choice. He had done one that management didn't want to use so they got stuck with the one with the "lady" on it. It is iconic though and everyone recognizes it even 40 years later. Watched many Elliot interviews and I remember him saying that he always wanted to find something interesting and different to add to his guitar playing. Sooo underrated. Not sure what I was doing when the Cars came about...probably listening to the same ol same ol Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. Love your channel. 👍

STORY TIME! I top-5 them (kind of) at the bottom of this.
Let's Go was the first song by The Cars that I ever heard. I remember where I was. Back seat of a Plymouth Arrow with my cousin, with my aunt and uncle driving us from Denver to California in the summer of 1979. My uncle had recorded a bunch of songs to cassettes from KAZY ("The Rock of Colorado" was their slogan) and Let's Go was on it. I must have heard it a dozen times on that trip, and oh did I love it. It's been my all-time favorite ever since. And The Cars have always been my favorite band. They were just... different... from all the WXYZ/CKLW/Dick Purtan top 40 radio stuff my parents favored at that time, different from everything else I had ever heard. I went out looking for that song when I got back to Detroit from that summer trip to CO & CA, and I was 12 and testing my mom's patience as I pawed through the record bins. I ended up with the first album on vinyl instead of Candy-O, which I did not find that day. THAT 2ND SIDE! And that was after a first side that was as hooky and awesome as anything I had ever experienced.
I had discovered my first rock band that was all my own, in terms of how I learned of them myself and discovered their sound without the influence of parents or the light musical peer pressure of my friends. I still play the 2nd side of the first album in that order whenever I am jonesing for some Cars. I think it was some time before I found Candy-O since I was so happy with The Cars debut album.
What a hard band to top five. Too many awesome songs. But #1 is always "Let's Go" for me if for no other reason than the visceral memories it brings back for me. Really their first three albums were for me music perfection. I liked Shake It Up less than those, but then Heartbeat City was top of game again. Never got into Door To Door at the time it came out, but it grew on me in later years. I don't hate their "Move Like This" album, but without Ben, it just was off for me. I play it now and again, but I have always favored Ben's singing by far over Ric's. Ric's quirky vocals (always been my description, too) are just as important to their sound for me - no knock on his singing. But BEN.
My top 5. With an asterisk for that whole 2nd side of the first album.
All Mixed Up (5d? this one had to grow on me for a few years. Who can figure out early teenage music tastes though.)
    Moving In Stereo (5c?)
    Bye Bye Love (5b?)
    5) You're All I've Got Tonight (but really, the whole 2nd side of "The Cars" is one long continuous play, as it was intended)
    4) Dangerous Type
    3) Candy-O
    2) It's Not The Night
    1) Let's Go

New Wave was colorful. How can something sound colorful. Well, the people who dressed up like "new wave" dressed "colorful." They had guts, because the vast majority of music lovers weren't following. And we know how intolerant young people can be. I knew a girl with a lunchbox purse. She wore hats too. They had pins stuck in their lapels. Late seventies this was

    ❤️ The Cars!
    - Touch and Go (perhaps my favorite EE solo)
    - Candy-O (because it’s bad-ass)
    - Strap Me In
    - Hello Again
    - Cruiser (hypnotic and punchy)

The best compliment I can give The Cars is that after listening to them awhile I decided to make a mixtape of theirs and it ended up being two discs. Too many good songs to do a top five but I'd like to highlight a few favorites; Don't Go to Pieces, Don't Cha Stop, Cruiser, Touch and Go, Down Boys, Gimme Some Slack.
R.I.P. Rick Ocasek and R.I.P. Benjamin Orr

Touch and Go is great because of the odd time signature with the drums and bass locking in, not to mention one of the greatest Elliot Easton guitar solos on the planet! There's too many great ones to make a top 5, seriously. All Mixed Up, It's All I Can Do, I'm Not the One, the list just goes on forever.

Top 5 Cars songs that rage near full volume....
    5) Moving In Stereo
    4) Let The Good Times Roll
    3) You're All I've Got Tonight
    2) All Mixed Up
    1) Dangerous Type
If you like listening to your music on higher end equipment, closer to full volume, than not. Then these are the ones. Really all of them, but especially "Dangerous Type."
I never really appreciated this song on vinyl, listening to it on a 1982 Yorx, all in one, "wanna be component, home stereo." Until I replaced it with a JVC RX-500B receiver/amp, Marantz CD player, and a pair of Cerwin-Vega AT-15s. The keyboard, guitar, and drums in this song are actually beyond incredible.
My parents were beyond thrilled, to say the least. Not surprisingly, I left home shortly thereafter. 😂
Edited - To say THANK YOU, for your hard work, and a great video! 👍 It made my morning, brother. And you are so right, who didn't love The Cars, back in the day? No one, that's who.

Hands down, the greatest American new wave rock band. Each band member brought something special to the table. Their music sounds just as fresh today. So hard for me to pick my top 5 because I love so many of their songs but here goes...
Let's Go - Such a fun, feel-good song that always takes me to a happy place.
Dangerous Type - Greg's synthesizer, Elliot's guitar solo, I especially love the ending.
Drive - Just a beautifully written song with Ben's wonderful vocals.
Bye Bye Love - A rockin' song with funky lyrics and, again, Ben's awesome vocals.
Magic - Another feel-good song that transports me right back to the 80's whenever I hear it.

I remember when I was learning guitar and taking a lesson on a song by 38 special, that lead guitarist Jeff Carlise(sp?), stated that the band was just another southern rock band until on day he heard "Just what I needed" by the cars ( the opening simplistic guitar) and thought well what about this!!! and thus " Hold on Loosely was born" and completely changed 38 specials trajectory. Love the content and THE CARS !!!

The Cars is one of my very favorite bands of all time forever. I was gutted when Ben and then Ric died. Their music got me through some seriously uncertain times in my life. They were the joy and the color of life right when I needed them. So many of Ric’s songs are embedded in my ears and heart for good. And his and (especially) Ben’s vocals are as familiar to me as the sound of my own breathing. And the other guys as well, David’s great drumming and outstanding graphic sense for the band, as an aesthetically-sensed person, I just love it. Elliott is one of rock’s most underrated guitarists, I particularly adore his “a dozen licks in one” guitar solo in my #1 favorite song of theirs, ‘Tonight She Comes’, and then there’s the band’s musical secret weapon, Greg Hawkes, from his atmospheric synths on ‘Drive’, to his “bag of tricks” sound effects and synth combo on ‘I’m In Touch With Your World’, to his beautiful sax solo closing out on of my very favorite Cars tunes, ‘All Mixed Up’, which seemingly echoes Ben’s gorgeous, tender lead vocal. Unforgettable. And that’s what this band is to me. RIP Ric and Ben. Thank you kind gents for making the world a better place.
    Edit: My 5er:
    5. ‘Bye Bye Love’
    4. ‘Fine Line’

My all-time favorite band!! I love that you did not choose the “typical“ songs normally associated with The Cars (except, of course, Drive) I would agree Let’s Go is one of the best songs ever… But the one that I wore out was Stranger Eyes. I remember for seeing the trailer for Top G un in the movie theater and only focusing on the fact that they were using that song as their background Thank you for all that commentary on my favorite group of all time… My husband knew how in love I was with The Cars and was the first to break the news to me when Benjamin Orr died in 2000. I absolutely love how they worked together as a band and shared so many parts of the arrangements and performances. Greg Hawkes was brilliant on the keyboards and really lead the way in the “80s sound“. Elliot Easton really was brilliant on the guitar and, honestly, David Robinson was just so quiet and in the background on the drums, but such an essential part of their sound. I often wonder how much more we would have known about the cars had they been who they are in the age of social media. They were my first ever concert and I am probably forever associated as “the girl who loved The Cars to anyone who knew me in the 80s in the 90s :)

Their music videos were very unique as well when MTV first started. I expected them to last a long time but they ended in the late 80's. My fiver is different but I respect yours. Drive is my all-time favorite. It has something about it that it gives me chills but it carries emotion to it. Something about it seems final.
