After many hours i finally made it to my Mikrotik RB750 thanks to your tutorial. The hardest part was i used 19.07 soft and i dont work. Then i used 18.06 for initrams and then upgrade to 19.07
Congrats. I know it has been a huge effort installing OpenWRT on Mikrotik devices for the first time. I experienced the same when making this video. The the same time, thanks for your input, I believe it will help other viewers who is trying to install OpenWRT on the Mikrotik RB750.
Nice video! Thank you! I'm in progress of setting up a DIY WiFi Pineapple on a RB951G2HnD. Hoping to also add external antenna's aswell. Using a USB 5v to 12v converter, allows me to power the unit via it's DC jack, using a laptop or power bank. :)
Thank you for your video! It helped me a lot to install OpenWRT on my hAP ac² from the Linux machine. But there were some difficulties. RouterOS ver.7 and later 6.xx versions DO NOT ALLOW to boot other operating systems via TFTP. So, I finally managed to do it by downgrading to an earlier (factory) firmware version 🌞
Im sad to say that your video is already starting to go out of date 😅 The official snapshot releases ship with a much lighter version of OpenWRT. Where you need to flash it/do your first configuration in a ssh session. Might be a good idea to show off this style of installation or give a note about it so people dont get confused when they cant access the luci interface as its not there by default anymore. Thanks for the video! Its nice to get to see the steps laid out in video.
Hi, thanks for the comment. Actually there is a video in my OpenWRT tutorial playlist "Openwrt beginner guide" where I introduce the basic concepts such as how to find the firmware for each router, system setting, LuCI/SSH access, wireless configuration. This video is a device specific tutorial, I assume the viewer should at least have some basic concept already.
Hi, thanks for the video! I have a doubt Can I install OpenWrt with RouterOS 7.6? factory version is 7.3.1 so in theory it's not possible to downgrade to 6.x.x right?
Same as @kamis47 - I was flashing RB952Ui-5ac2nD (hAP ac lite) and it stuck on flashing upgrade image. It seems that you need to flash upgrade image not with same version. I tried with 19.07.4 on the beginning, then 19.07.8 on upgrade and it works.
This I had the exact problem. I don't know why either but I figured out a solution: Ignore it and log into your router you will see a message that it's in recovery mode. It will also say you can upgrade the firmware and that's the solution... Upload the upgrade firmware. (You will find it in the same place where you got the factory image, the name should be something like: "Sysupgrade image") Once upgraded it will be fully installed. Done :D - (P.S: Yes, I know your comment is 2 months old :)
hi sir. can u teach me about setup vlan in hap ac2 for load balance using mwan3. i need using 3isp.. im tried using your tutorial for load balance. but failed.
Hi, thanks for this tutorial. Some of the menu items are different from my Microtik (Mikrotik RB760iGS (hEX S)). I dont have switch menu. Any suggestion how to create VLANs when Switch is not present? I would like to use the fiber optic port to connect to the ISP but I need a VLAN 300 for that. Thanks
em you can enable the switch menu, also you dont need the switch menu, you can use a simple bridge, also you can create any vlan even wen the switch is not present lol. RouterOS is a beautifull piece of software, why would you replace it lol
I have explained all the steps in detail. You can watch the video, or read the official docs for to get the answer. Do not proceed until you all clear, as a mistake could brick the device and loose the license.
Hi, the hap ac3 is having more or less the same specs with the 8devices Habanero DVK and the DR4029 from Wallys. The OpenWRT peformance of this SoC is not really impressive (as I remember it is around 800Mbps without offloading).
Basically it is the same, just a different initramfs name. Still, boot the the initial ramdisk with TinyPXE, see how the router is doing and flash the sysupgrade file to permanently flash OpenWRT on NAND. However, the key/way to start netinstall for the RB2011 is different, you can check this at mikrotik website.
Thanks for the video, explained pretty well. I'm getting terrible performance for 2.4 ghz wifi with openwrt, does anyone have similar problem? Stock firmware with basic configuration performs way better.
Hi, the video is very helpful, thank you. I have a question: at the permanent flash step, after uploading sysupgrade file a metadata error is shown. "Image metadata not found Sysupgrade is not yet supported on unknown. Image check failed. The uploaded image file does not contain a supported format. Make sure that you choose the generic image format for your platform." I am sure I upload the correct image file. So I forced to flash with this image. But router is resarted and return back to RouterOS. How can I solve this issue? Router: mikrotik rb922uags-5hpacd
Hi, you can get the firmware from here: openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/mikrotik/mikrotik_rb922uags-5hpacd Please note that this router has 2 brach, the stable version and development snapshot. If you netboot the initramfs from stable version (openwrt-19.07.7-ar71xx-mikrotik-vmlinux-initramfs.elf), you have to upload the stable sysupgrade file (openwrt-19.07.7-ar71xx-mikrotik-nand-large-ac-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin) in Luci.
Thnx for the link. But I had already downloaded and tested the stable version (not the snapshot) of the firmware from that link. I also tried ssh to router and sysupgrade with -n and -F options. It also didnt work, after reboot it goes back to routerOs, the last prompted message was image meta not found since after rebooting ssh exits.
I will leave this question to our developers who have been working hard for years to develop and maintain the OpenWRT git/firmware for Mikrotik and to the OpenWRT Mikrotik community. I surely know once you ask this in the forum, somebody will answer you :D
OpenWRT is one of the other most powerful OS in router world and also has capabilities far beyond the router world. I use both but i generally prefer OpenWRT. Configuring RouterOS can be very unintuitive and cumbersome. I think everyone should use the OS they prefer for his use case. ;)
Routeros is powerful, but overkill for most home networks. I went with openwrt for CAKE sqm - which is amazing and destroys any kind of qos possible in v6. I get sub-5ms bufferbloat at all times with 10x devices fully saturating my 100mbps plan. Once v7 with cake becomes stable in like 2023 I'll switch to routeros for everything.
Heres a good resource on reinstalling RouterOS with their tool called Netinstall alduras.com/wp/mikrotik-netinstall-failures-avoid/ Its only for windows, so if you use something like MacOS or Linux. A better step might be to save the already installed RouterOS to your pc before flashing OpenWRT. The steps are described here openwrt.org/toh/mikrotik/common#saving_mikrotik_routeros
Yup, you got it. As far as I know, the this method applied to Mikrotik and some Qualcomm IPQ SoC via uBoot, such as the Habanero DVK, Wallys DR4029 running IPQ4029 SoC.
I tried my best with RouterOS to get the hAP Ac2 to get the VLAN working. I hate it, so much time wasted. Now wantEd to try OpenWRT, but I’m stuck at the TinyPXE giving me “no other dhcp discovered”. What should I do? I followed the video instructions as it is, but no luck 🙁
In my case I had problems with firewall on Windows machine. Despite allowing TinyPXE to listen on the network it wasn't recognized by the MT router. I had to disable the Windows firewall completely for the time of TinyPXE usage.

Configuring RouterOS can be very unintuitive and cumbersome. And i personally prefer to have a open and universally applicable system. And OpenWRT has capabilities that go way beyond that. For example every access point could have an audio interface to drive speakers in its room, and the Router could stream music perfectly synchronized to all of them.. And there so many more possibilities with OpenWRT. Who needs to spread raspberry pi and other mini pc's to all rooms when there are already access points with multicore arm socs hanging around? Why should all those powerful devices those days be limited to basic network and routing stuff if they could do almost everything other computers can?
