    Thank you for that clear instruction!
    One IMPORTANT note:
    Sometimes its impossible to setup latest version of OpenWRT and you need to try older version.
    You didn't see any errors. Logs in TinyPXE will looks fine and when you change port from 1 to 2 you can't reach address 192.168.1.1. So in that case take older version of openwrt.
    Also you can try other subversion of RouterOS v6.xx

    I'd never flash a MikroTik product with OpenWRT, despite the fact that I love using it as much as RouterOS. The reason is the motivation for me to move out of standard consumer grade stuff in the first place. I got tired of perfectly good hardware losing updates, lacking performance, getting bricked by official firmware, and hardware getting EoL and deprecated despite being powerful enough for my use case. Secondly the fact that the stock firmware wouldn't allow me to take full advantage of the hardware.
    Both RouterOS and OpenWRT solves these problems for me. Both have life long updates and both let me get as much as I can (to the best of my abilities) out of the hardwares. As such if RouterOS is already there, I don't see any value in switching it out for OpenWRT.
    Love the video regardless, because love the endless possibilities with both platforms.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Totally agree. I have been using Mikrotik boards in production environment and there is no point to complain about its performance (even though there are still small bugs). However, as a channel making videos about OpenWRT, I want to try all the possibilities and see how Open-Source working with a board/system made for Closed-Source. I belive there are people who is having the same idea with me and perhaps searching for the same thing on Google (like what I did previously), that is why this video come.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OpenWRT allows you to write your own apps, doesn't it? RouterOS doesn't. That's an advantage

    • @RavingMad
      @RavingMad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VanTechCorner I appreciate all your videos, and they've provided with some good fundamentals in OpenWRT. In my network for routing and managed switching, I have 90% MikroTik, but for APs I strictly use OpenWRT. This combination has been working great for me so far. Most amazing thing that has happened since my network transformation to present state, is that I don't have any unplanned downtime. Sometimes if I didn't upgrade firmware, the setup runs for months until I finally get around to rolling out the upgrades.

    • @RavingMad
      @RavingMad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ Yes of course OpenWRT is open and OSS so it provides a degree of freedom that MikroTik won't. But I mentioned my original motivation, I don't want to stop receiving updates for a perfectly good working hardware. I understand if hardware doesn't have enough resources to perform actions but I don't want them to be deprecated because vendor released a new product and they don't want to support the old working hardware anymore. Both MikroTik and OpenWRT ticks this box.
      On the other hand... MikroTik has scripting built in and in version 7 of RouterOS they have container support. I think these two features allow one to greatly augment RouterOS functionality.
      Regarding this particular model, Hex, the device only has 16MB flash. Unless one builds their own image, with pre-built OpenWRT images, there isn't much space left for a whole lot of new stuff.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Heh, HEX has also micro SD card slot

  • @ckthmpson

    I have one of these routers (the Mikrotik RB750Gr3 HEX) and have been considering flashing OpenWRT. I bought this router because I thought there was support for Zerotier on Mikrotik. However, turns out this is only true for the Miktrotik ARM based routers...not the mmips (Mediatech) based Mikrotik routers. I've since switched from Zerotier to Tailscale, but still no way to run either (Zerotier or Tailscale) on a Mikrotik RB750Gr3 when it's running RouterOS. Hoping that with OpenWRT, I can have either Zerotier or Tailscale running on the device.
    Very good video. Thank you for sharing...

    What’s advantages of openwrt vs router os? Router OS imho is way more powerful than openwrt, despite all the complexities but it also comes with a lot of functionality (yes, some of it are proprietary. I have installed openwrt before but not so impressed despite easy configuration in the beginning but not much use later on.

      Personally I don't see the great advantage of OpenWRT in a mikrotik Router, Mikrotik has a thousand times more functions than said OpenWRT. Personally, it is a bet that I would never do it.

      Well, I have some issues with RouterOS. It has tons of functionality but some functions do not work well together or are unstable (Wireguard, some seetings in VLANs). Also, with OpenWRT I have better performance. When I put 15 users on wifi on RB951G-2HnD with RouterOS, internet is unusable - pages do not want to load (no SQM, 50 MBit). 15 people on the same router with OpenWrt can browse the internet fine (again, no SQM, 50 MBit link).

    What are the usb port supposed to be used for? Theres nothing about it in documentation. What does the mode button do? Nothing on that in documentation as well

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, in OpenWrt, the USB port can be used to connect anything has a USB interface, such as a USB 4G modem, a USB WiFi adapter, a printer, a USB stick, USB HDD ...You can also connect your iPhone/Android phone to it to use the cellular data. There are different things you can do with the USB port, the same go to the button. It is not limited like what you can do in RouterOS.
      OpenWrt is open-source, the information (the wiki) is contributed by developers and users (like you). For sure there will be something not found in that wiki, but it doesn't you can't find it somewhere else.
      Let's say, the user manual of the Laptop will not tell you what you can do with the USB port, but you will know what to do and how to use it.

      There is an official guide from mikrotik for "net install" and you can follow this to go back to RouterOS. For now there is no video available (this channel), but I guess you can find it on TH-cam.

      A lot of OpenWRT developers and users spent their ime and effort to make this possible, and the MT7612 SoC is well supported with hardware flow offloading. That is why I made this video. With RouterOS, I can't run other Linux app, such as AdguardHome & NUT, and OpenWRT get it done easily.

    RouterBoard already boundle RouterOS with it.
    R86S n5105 x86 maybe more better and easier for install OpenWRT.

    i prefer to use totolink x5000r than this router, more cheapest and simple to install openwrt plus dualband ax1800 wifi. the other specs, same as mikrotik rb750gr3 minus usb port.

    Reemplazar un sistema como RouterOS, por openWRT en una RB me parece un suicidio innecesario totalmente. openWRT no tiene nada que hacer al lado de RouterOS.

    Looks like you painted your new lambo by hand just for fun. There is no any valuable reason to install openwrt on mikrotik devices. RouterOS much stable and usful in more cases than OpenWRT.
