Hi love your videos I'm going to get me a border collie puppy to train because we rasie alot of sheep and i had a really good border collie but I sadly lost her the other day but do you have to keep your dogs up so they don't run the sheep or cattle without you

Hi, Thanks for your comment. So sorry to hear about your loss. I never have to worry about my border collies bothering my livestock. We have a very intense pup in training however that cannot yet be left unsupervised. Once she finishes her training I’m confident that’ll she’ll be trustworthy and not run the livestock. Part of the training is teaching them patience. Once they have some good training and ground manners I like to let them walk alongside me through the livestock at chore time. When the young dogs do get in with the livestock and work without me I don’t yell and get after them. I simply set them up in a balance then call them off. That way they won’t develop bad habits and get in their cheap shots before getting caught.

What type of leash do you use?

My training leashes are homemade. I buy rope or colorful parachute cord that I braid three strands to make different lengths depending on whether I’m training in a round pen (about 10’ length) or walking with them which would be much shorter. I buy clips for attaching to the collar at the Ranch supply store where I buy the rope. I burn the ends so the rope doesn’t work loose. Or any store bought leash from a pet store would work. Take care.
