I once considered using this in a quiz to see who would recognise all the tunes. I abandoned the idea because so few people ever listen to anything other than pop music that few could name the various themes even if they had the patience to listen, which is doubtful.
Absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately I moved here after they made the disastrous decision of removing this from the airwaves, but what can one do? Merely be thankful to people like you for sharing it with everybody else. So yeh, thanks! :)
I used to listen to this most mornings for thirty years, it became a lovely ritual start to my work. I don't listen to or watch the BBC propaganda channels any more.
This should be brought back IMMEDIATELY! It is such a "call to arms" for everyone in the UK. We always used to play it on our cruising sailing ketch touring the west coast of Europe. Full volume - esp the last bit "Rule Brittania"

Please feel free to emigrate whenever you like, perhaps you haven't, but your group's being here in such numbers ruins the country for those who have no other to call home.
@s Selamat I think this is a lovely comment, unlike those below. Please ignore these people, they don't truly speak for the country we all share and love.
I nicknamed this "EMS" a term from very early computing standing for Early Morning Start, mainly because it was amongst the first bit of music on my clock radio alarm in the morning. Reminded you of who you were and where you were, nothing wrong with that as a start to the day.
I want Radio 4 to bring it back - just for a few minutes a day, can we not say that we are proud to be British/English/Welsh/Scottish/Irish and not feel falsely guilt ridden! God Bless the United Kingdom.
What a wonderful sound this was to start each day. Destroyed by someone who clearly had no understanding of the typical R4 listener and probably advised by focus groups. Ah, well.
Funny that I occasionally randomly listened to Radio 4 all these years since before 1978 and have never once heard of this. _Sailing By_ , the themes from _The Archers_ , _Desert Island Discs_ , _Test Match Special_ , _Just a Minute_ , yup I know all of those. But never heard this once. Funny that.
As an Irish ex-pat living over in the UK, I used to like hearing this medley but two things confused me: 1) Why no song for England specifically? ("Rule Britannia" is about Scotland, Wales and England.) 2) Why no song to reflect the people in N.Ireland who identify as British? "Danny Boy" Hardly reflects their British identity? "The Sash" would have been the obvious choice.
Just commenting now about a Tory wanting to have the BBC play the National Anthem every day now. I think they still do on radio 4, but got me to thinking about this lovely piece of music. I was a bad sleeper when I was young, then I was a Mother feeding babies through the night, and then I was abroad - it was a lovely thing. I've only ever written to the BBC once to complain in my life, and it was about abandoning this. Thanks for the info about Fred Arlon (Unsung hero, I think.....)
Doesn't the getting rid of this from Radio 4 sum up what is wrong with UK and what is wrong with radio! I miss this. Like the shipping forecast's Sailing By it reminds me of years ago.
If you've enjoyed this lovely piece, check out ' BBC Television Start Up from 1956 '.Called ' National Airs ' , I'm sure some inspiration was taken from it for the Radio 4 UK Theme .I recall it as a child starting at 4.55 p.m before the start of ' Children's Television ' at 5.00.It is a beautiful piece of music and deserves to be re-recorded and featured more .I remember reading in 2006 that the 'UK Theme ' was dropped from R4 to make the news feel ' more pacey ' . Typical BS from the BBC which was a taste of things to come !.

Spell "arse" the British way would you?
TheYopogo the London way you mean
so wonderful.
When I occasionally had to be at work at 6am years ago, I would make sure I got in the car in time for this to be on the radio.
We need this back more then ever
Fantastic to hear this again,it is for the early risers
i used to listen to this on my car radio when i was a milkman going to work
On the longwave or medium-wave feed?
This was the Charter, the Charter of the land.
CFCN Calgary,, and that concludes another broadcasting day, dear friends thanks for listening. 📻
God keep you till we meet again.
Time to turn the lights down low and get a bit of rest. 🕯
I once considered using this in a quiz to see who would recognise all the tunes. I abandoned the idea because so few people ever listen to anything other than pop music that few could name the various themes even if they had the patience to listen, which is doubtful.
This would make a great alarm tone.
Absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately I moved here after they made the disastrous decision of removing this from the airwaves, but what can one do? Merely be thankful to people like you for sharing it with everybody else. So yeh, thanks! :)
Great piece of music,
Oh dear how we have slipped since then
I used to listen to this most mornings for thirty years, it became a lovely ritual start to my work. I don't listen to or watch the BBC propaganda channels any more.
The Bolshevik Broadcasting Corporation became the Brussels Broadcasting Corporation.
This should be brought back IMMEDIATELY! It is such a "call to arms" for everyone in the UK. We always used to play it on our cruising sailing ketch touring the west coast of Europe. Full volume - esp the last bit "Rule Brittania"
This needs to be brought back.
Bring this back please give the United kingdom back this lovely melody... why ever was it taken awsy .... come people of the UK proud and passionate for all the world welcome one and all to this land ...
Thanks very much, I love it
Bring it back
Absolutely love this.
This is the best👍🇬🇧
Now that we’ve had Brexit we need to bring this back
I’m an American...What say you, Brits?
Definitely
Absolutely. So many times I was out of home really early and had this to start my journey. I knew the day would go well.
I am from the ethnic minority. But I always find it extremely enjoyable and not at all offended whenever they played these tuneful and joyful music.
I'm an ethnic minority too ....white British
Please feel free to emigrate whenever you like, perhaps you haven't, but your group's being here in such numbers ruins the country for those who have no other to call home.
@s Selamat I think this is a lovely comment, unlike those below. Please ignore these people, they don't truly speak for the country we all share and love.
@@colinclarke4285 No sir, that's not the minority group in Britain. That is the overwhelming majority.
Why would anyone be offended anyway?
I nicknamed this "EMS" a term from very early computing standing for Early Morning Start, mainly because it was amongst the first bit of music on my clock radio alarm in the morning. Reminded you of who you were and where you were, nothing wrong with that as a start to the day.
I want Radio 4 to bring it back - just for a few minutes a day, can we not say that we are proud to be British/English/Welsh/Scottish/Irish and not feel falsely guilt ridden! God Bless the United Kingdom.
I miss waking up to this
What a wonderful sound this was to start each day. Destroyed by someone who clearly had no understanding of the typical R4 listener and probably advised by focus groups. Ah, well.
Download it onto your phone and you can have it as your alarm wake up tune. No need for early rises!
Funny that.
Bring it back...
BBC World Service should bring back the classic Lillibulero, like I used to hear it during the 90s after R4 closedown for the night. 👍
My childhood!
Bring it back, God save the Queen and long live the United Kingdom.
Bravo! Cheers from Brazil
Great - used to listen to this every morning for 6 years when living in Brussels. Bring a new version back BEEB!

This doesn't divide. It unites.
heh Drunken Sailor & Greensleeves playing on top of one another. Quite a clever counterpoint
For me, they clashed so badly that the whole song was rendered ridiculous
Got this as a ring tone cheers people up
Doesn't the getting rid of this from Radio 4 sum up what is wrong with UK and what is wrong with radio! I miss this. Like the shipping forecast's Sailing By it reminds me of years ago.
Tweet of the day does not match up! Over a decade now without this lovely broadcast. What a shame.
Is this not on anymore? Is it now JUST sailing by? I love this, brings back so many memories.
