You used the phrase "assigned at birth". That is NOT in the handbook, and it is VERY important to understand that gender is not "assigned" at birth. "Biological sex at birth" is what the handbook says because it is not necessary to assign anything - you are born male and female, and that is it.

@@ERoylance91 They are not transgender but are rather considered intersex. Even being intersex most individuals tend to have characteristics closer to one gender rather than another. In fact, there are even some intersex individuals who don't even know that they have some chromosome abnormalities and live there live without ever knowing. Statistically speaking intersex individuals make up less than .01% of the trans population, (though technically they shouldn't be considered in that group).

Thanks for the quick summary. Most of the comments are focusing on how we need to not get swayed by the world, which of course is important. But we also need to remember that those who consider themselves trans are not enemies. And the fact that they still want to attend our church should be encouraged. We need to treat them as individuals and not b afraid to befriend them, despite their membership restrictions. 😊

I am a lifelong, active member of the church who has also experienced gender dysphoria since my earliest memories. I have had many struggles with this, but I have never attempted to transition to a female presentation. My experience with this has never barred me from serving in the church (even when some of my leaders have known about it). I am personally grateful for continuing revelation and for the additional clarity on this issue. Much of this was already codified in the 2020 policy change, which (FINALLY) clarified unequivocally that "gender" in the Family Proclamation means "biological sex at birth." I had seen so many people wresting that principle to claim that their true, eternal gender identity was their preferred presentation. This new policy update is less dramatic than the 2020 update, but represents the Lord's prophets continuing to seek revelation and refine their efforts to minister to those who are sometimes in great pan and extreme distress, while stile maintaining doctrinal purity and consistency.

@@_Squiggle_Even for intersex, it is not so much "unknowable" as "more difficult to determine". Ultimately a DNA test will always determine the answer. Any y-chromosomes = male (no matter what number of x); otherwise female. There are cases where the doctor can get it wrong at birth since the genitals may be misleading and typically that is the only indicator doctors use. Many doctors default to female if it is unclear rather than running a genetic test.
Point being doctors may assign a gender, but the church cares about the actual biology not that doctor's opinion. If later evidence shows that the doctor was wrong, the church would ammend its records.

    • @TheYgds
      @TheYgds 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@_Squiggle_ The cases where it isn't just a variant of one sex or the other are vanishingly rare. The exception has come to dominate the entire conversation. Most cases of sex ambiguity produce someone who is either female or male, but in some way fail to develop full expression of the primary or secondary sexual characteristics. The determinant of sex is by the type of gonad, either ovary or testes, very very very few people have a true (and also always non-functional) ovo-testes.
Some places in the world with genetic bottle-necks have much higher rates of some of these conditions, which inflates tremendously the international numbers. Modern medicine can determine sex at birth, even with someone with ambiguous genitalia. Although, it will require that they look.
Intersex is a tricky category, because it isn't a single category at all, but a host of different rare genetic and developmental disorders and conditions. Many people who have some type of intersex genotype or phenotype are not healthy, and it is the underlying cause of disease for many of them.
The most concerning recent advent in that field of study is that while intersex births are still very rare, but environmental contaminants have the potential to feminize males and disrupt normal female development. The phthalate syndrome research is very concerning.

To me I feel like this is a good mix of respecting everyone despite keeping true to our values. Church policies are always changing but the gospel does not, and they make it clear that certain ordinances are meant specifically the way god intended with man and woman sealed together, and that gender is essential.
I don’t believe god puts us in the wrong bodies, I believe we are born with our own unique issues, mentally or physically. Gender dysphoria is something I’m glad I haven’t ever experienced, but I imagine it’s very difficult to go through.
Like any other illness that members go through, these members need our love and support. Hopefully they can become comfortable with the bodies that god gave them, and to not surgically alter a perfectly healthy body, but we cannot help them through their journey with prejudice and hate.
We need to have more discussions in church about this, because I see so many young people- especially young women- get confused about their gender and sexuality. We need to provide a firm and steady foundation for them to rely on, and be there for them in case they trip and fall.

That’s fine, do that in your own time, but respect 99.99% of nature and stop trying to change society and nature and gods laws. Respect and love go both ways. If a man is in a bathroom with any of our wives and daughters, there’s going to be trouble, and there should be. Harmless or not.

@@korvaamiko66 interesting... This of course is a little bit ironic, because Mormons depend very greatly on the ambiguity of certain definitions, words, in the use of the English language. For instance; they have changed what they contend is by definition a plural marriage. They have included that one must cohabitate and have children, in order for it to be considered a polygamist marriage. Go to any dictionary, and I think the language defining what polygamy is is very clear; it's being married to more than one person. They've also done the same with the word virgin, adding that the sanctity of virginity can only be taken by a earthly man from an earthly woman. Brigham Young along with the other early apostles and other founders of the Mormon church dictate that the birth of Christ was by their definition a virgin birth, but it was God that consummated this conception of Christ with Mary into the physical realm.
Several of their early church leaders don't believe that the Holy Ghost had caused the immaculate conception of our Lord and Savior.

Even transgender individuals can have all the privileges of Church membership if they don't transition.

I've seen how members of the church treat members of the LGBTQ+ community. It's not with kindness, or it's a kind of fake kindness that's not truly kind or genuine. Love the sinner and hate the sin rarely results in true love. I worked in a school, and I saw entire families destroyed over this issue, including suicide and murder. When all parties dig in their heels and refuse to "compromise their integrity," it results in destroyed lives. That's why this is a difficult topic. Because those who have experienced it first-hand see how destructive it is, and the religious people are almost never blamed for it. Satan didn't get to them. They stayed true to their faith, and they are congratulated for it, even when their behavior is abusive and full of hate. It is ALWAYS the LGBTQ+ person who gave in to Satan, causing things to fall apart, even if they are the kindest, nicest person on the planet. I'm not sure what you would like church leaders to stand for, but as someone who saw this happen over and over again in my classroom, sometimes resulting in student deaths, I wish more church leaders would advocate for compromise and peace instead of unwavering loyalty to God and religion. It is possible to hold to your values and be a genuinely kind person too, but that's not what ends up happening in far too many cases.

Unfortunately, the narrator of this video keeps using the phrase “assigned at birth” when referring to the wording in the new handbook and guidelines regarding gender. However, that phrase is NOT in the General Handbook or the guidelines. The wording is “biological sex at birth.” The word “assigned” is a red flag word used by many in society who feel that gender is malleable and can be assigned or altered. It would be much more helpful if the narrator of this video used the actual verbiage found in the handbook and the recent updates.

"Assigning" is perfectly used. Maybe there would be no argument if she used "determine"? That's what is actually used in the GH.
"Individuals Whose Sex at Birth Is Not Clear
In extremely rare circumstances, a baby is born with genitals that are not clearly male or female (ambiguous genitalia, sexual ambiguity, or intersex). Parents or others may have to make decisions to determine their child’s sex with the guidance of competent medical professionals. Decisions about proceeding with medical or surgical intervention are often made in the newborn period. However, they can be delayed unless they are medically necessary.
Special compassion and wisdom are required when youth or adults who were born with sexual ambiguity experience emotional conflict regarding the gender decisions made in infancy or childhood and the gender with which they identify.
Questions about membership records, priesthood ordination, and temple ordinances for youth or adults who were born with sexual ambiguity should be directed to the Office of the First Presidency.

I am grateful for the clarity and consistency that these updates provide. What I do find interesting is that, of all Christian theologies, our church actually provides theological plausibility for legitimate transgender scenarios. President Oaks stated: That is why we teach that “gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.”. So, if gender was an essential premortal characteristic, and the process of a spirit coming to earth to take on a body is not perfect (birth defects, inter-sex births, Swyers syndrome, etc.) -could it be possible that, in this fallen world, a mortal body with the incorrect sex formed around a spirit? Maybe, maybe not. No revelation covers this specific phase of the Plan of Salvation. If so, I would expect it to be a fairly rare occurrence. However, as President Oaks said, "There is a lot we don't know about the three major periods in the plan of salvation..." A Christianity with no pre-mortal existence in their theology cannot accommodate such a possibility. I hope these policies can be implemented in a way that keep the focus on the Savior, His doctrine and the direction to treat all with love and respect.

@@bakachan3601 It wasn't cherry-picking. And again, there's no such thing as a transgender. You're the one pushing opinion. The Bible makes clear that God loves the world collectively (John 3:16; Romans 5:8) and that he loves young and unaccountable children (Deut 1:39; Matt 19:14). However, until a sinner puts his trust in Jesus he is under God's wrath. Ephesians 2:3. So in his mercy God loves everyone, but in his holiness God HATES many people. "The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity." Psalm 5:5. God also hates "hands that shed innocent blood". See Proverbs 6:16-17. Also, Proverbs 6:16 defines "abomination" as "things that the LORD hates". Since the LORD called transvestites themselves an "abomination" (Deut 22:5), that means God hates transvestites too. When you say "God loves you" to perverts you need to qualify the statement by reminding them of God's holiness and righteous indignation. God burns perverts alive. Gen 19:24-25; Jude 1:7.

To me, this wasn't difficult. How can you believe that you're made in the image of God and also believe He made a mistake with your sex/gender? The latter is a prideful worldly view.
The change in pronouns disassociating from sex/gender is a lingual thing so ultimately is not consequential. Physical change of the body would mean you disagree with the image of God and therefore is consequential.
Nevertheless, speaking to someone with respect, love, and care (this doesn't mean you have to support everything they say/do and reinforce their decision so that they feel good about their decisions) should be at play REGARDLESS of where anyone lines up on anything.
Sure, it'll be more difficult as the waters get muddier to not speak inappropriately. But the Holy Ghost will tell you what you should say if you listen.

Gender is not a choice. You are either male or female, you can't just choose and I am so glad the church is clarifying this for individuals who keep trying to find a work around the laws of God. Individuals who struggle with dysphoria need our sympathy and support, they do not need, nor should we provide affirmation for something that is so clearly a perversion of the laws of God.

To me the subject is not complicated. Gender transition (which is not even possible, even after drugs and surgery) is nothing more than another ungodly doctrine of the Great and Spacious building that has found popularity in our day and is being pushed upon society. Meanwhile, those at the tree, that love truth, are being shouted at and mocked for not pandering to falsehoods. Same old same old.
While I may feel compassion for individuals who struggle with gender dysphoria, pandering to their false beliefs does no one any good. In fact, it does the opposite. I will not do things such as use false pronouns. Truth and reality are NOT usurped by feelings.
We ALL have issues we struggle with. At the end of the day every single one of us has to ask this question……will I put my will above the Lord’s, or will I do as Christ did and say, “Thy will be done.”

@@_Squiggle_ In English, for the majority of people "gender" is synonymous with "sex". So "gender", like sex, is unchangeable even with a lifetime of cross sex hormones and surgeries. Gender, as in the linguistic categories of "masculine" or "feminine", or as in the theoretical "social construct"- these have no value to people who don't care about theory. Women, adult human females, don't have to be "feminine" in order to be women. We are not stereotypes or costumes. Women are just female. There is no such thing as a male woman or a male girl- those are just men and boys, regardless of how they identify, dress, behave.

@@cousinadams6845 I agree the terminology is super confusing. In general, transgender people use the word 'gender' with the definition that is not just the same as 'sex.'
But I think the social construct of gender is relevant. Lots of people get made fun for "not being manly enough" or spend money trying to make themselves seem "more feminine." I agree that it's made up but it's a made up a part of culture everyone will need to interact with
The only reason you think that a manly female is not a man is because your definition of woman is such. The definition of woman is made up, so there's not ultimately a "right answer" to what it can mean.

I personally know two individuals who were born intersexed. Their parents had to decide, at birth, what sex was going to be assigned to these children. Both, as adults, transitioned to the other sex. Upon hormone testing, these individuals had more of the opposite sex hormones confirming the assigned sex at birth was incorrect. Personally, I feel these new policies are in direct opposition to what the church has been stating for many years...that we are to be sensitive, accepting, and to love all of our brothers and sisters. These members are not pediophils and should not be discriminated against, i.e., by advising that if they cannot find a single stall restroom in the church, that they will be escorted by another member who has cleared the restroom of other members while this member uses the restroom, or they will need to find an alternative means to use the restroom. How humiliating is that for the member? Why discriminate and state that our transgender sisters can only attend Relief Society on a limited basis? I have a question for all of my member friends. If Christ was the door greeter at sacrament meeting, and one of our transgender brothers or sisters presented to attend that meeting, would Christ turn that person away? I think not. He would welcome them with open arms. I personally think that we have taken a step backwards in love and acceptance.

Wrong. You're describing the experiences of two people born with a genetic condition before committees existed to protect babies with ambiguous genitalia and other birth defects. Anyone can look up the David & Bruce Reimer case for a chilling example of why we DON'T transition infants... or buy into gender ideology. Those cases aren't representative of the vast majority of transgender people. Your example is a far cry from the physically healthy father of 4 who gets sexual satisfaction from wearing his wife's clothing when she's not home- like Bruce Jenner or Tyler Reks; Or the plethora of austic girls and girls in foster care sucked into the lie that they can become boys (Keira Bell, Elle Palmer, Chloe Cole). You didn't mention the young men who consume so much pornography that they dream about becoming the sexual object in the videos they're addicted to- like Andrea Long Chu- who wrote in his infamous book "Females": The barest essentials’ of femaleness is ‘an open mouth, an expectant a**hole, blank, blank eyes’. 48% of incarcerated trans "women" are in jail for sexual assault involving women and/or children- Karen White, Isla Bryson, Hannah/ James Tubbs, Synthia China Blast. I could go on and on- which shouldn't be possible with a small wholesome population. There are so many women who have been sounding the alarm about transgenderism for decades- Janice Raymond, Helen Joyce, Abigail Shier, Julie Bindel, Kathleen Stock, Debra Soh, Cordelia Fine, Kara Dansky, Linda Blade, Jennifer Bilek, Sheila Jeffreys....You owe it to yourself to do more research before you condemn the church and jump to conclusions about what Christ should welcome with open arms into his church.
