Thanks Ed, really loved sharing this story. The Ratarossa is pure fun, driving it or turning up to Ferrari events in it and seeing the shocked reactions of Ferrari purists is hilarious.
Despite that I did actually save this Testarossa from its otherwise destination with the scrap heap, it’s now back in the road where it belongs …. And it sounds fantastic !!!

The kit car mold story fits with the primer body, having it in primer would keep the mold material from sticking and you don't have to worry about paint scratches aswell.

Exactly no point painting if it works keep it like that is even more rare & unique.. another similar cool story i saw at Jay Leno garage an chap (who is now old) really loved a Ferrari 250 TR but the ones available were beyond outrageous expensive, story goes that he went in vacation in Italy were he traced & found a body shell of a 250-TR in the shed of a guy who create a version for Enzo back in the days to be approved but Commendatore rejected that body shell since he already approved Fantuzzi brothers work.. So this gentlemen bought that body shell, then year by year sourced and got all mechanical parts he could find and build the car but he wanted to paint it but he decided to left it in its natural state of aluminum avoiding adding extra weight and since he wanted to race it & use it he focused fixing only oxidizations since aluminum do not rust.. but yeah that story is also very cool listening the man explain all and is so similar in both cases as passionate builders for the principle that they are lucky 'est people on earth to be able to get a "cheap" Ferrari and to enjoy them daily as they are.. here is the link to Jay show with full story :

In the 80 's. I had the pleasure LOL of fixing not one but 2 Testarosa roadster conversions. One was Koenlgg's personal supercharged/turbo roadster. The blue car. The problem they had was chassis flex obviously. I fabricated polished stainless steel side pods just like the F40 has in carbon fiber on their car. This was pre-F40 80's when I did this. The top of the tubing was polished and the stressed skin sides were covered in matching leather of the interior color. Actually looked factory installed when completed. When completed 0 flex mission accomplished.

Sir, I and Ray were the original owners of, and the modifiers of the Testarossa. (we paid $35k for the bits) We later sold it to your buyer D__ Good___. Here is the story: Ray and I bought it from a scavenger of all things Ferrari and brought all of the individual bits to the Los Angeles area to turn it into the nicest convertible there would be. We were into building one-off cars for shows... The chassis came from a car that suffered a fire, the body panels came from a car that was completely rolled (every body panel was wrinkled), the interior came from something unknown, and the engine came from a car that replaced it with a Koenigsegg engine (thus we were skeptical if this engine ran.) It was loosely assembled but we stripped it and I proceeded to weld shear panels in between each of the A-Pilar, rocker, B-pilar and rear fire wall before we cut the roof. The reason for the overkill was to avoid the New Port Beach Straman guys method of welding a 1x3" bar across the middle of the door jambs and thus not have a bar to step over. We then integrated a Mercedes Benz 190 automated top (Dan sold it before you) completely functioning (raise the bonnet, extend the top, lower the bonnet...). The engine was rebuilt by a Los A Ferrari mechanic in the off hours for Dan. Every single valve was bent and thus in the 1990's at $345 each that was a tough cost, so we as a favor had then custom made by a friend at his machine shop. Thus, the engine was working as you say. The plan for the car was to be the best Ferrari Testarossa Convertible in the world, but we both had moved on to other personal projects and it was sold to Dan. I tried to buy the car back from him just one year before you bought it, but the price to me was not even remotely as low as you stated, it was north of 75k. Such is life, and I am still glad to see it driving, and though I surely wished I could have finished the proper way. All the best to you and yours. Oh, and it was never ever part of a mold splashing event, seriously wasn't. Ray had a fiberglass business, but that was never ever the intent. I was just a Ferrari wana-be on an engineering budget.
    Carl Guichard, US

There's something to be said about taking a cheaply purchased super car and ratting it out. No need to worry about scratching it or putting miles on it. Just enjoy. I think the key to cars like this is to get the sound right with the proper exhaust and the feeling of the handling and the gated manual transmission.

I love the rat rod aesthetic. Cars are an interest of mine, but my passion is bicycles, road bikes to be specific. All of my builds have a design concept, often with an automotive inspiration. Wishing to one day do a rat rod road bike build, I did a quick image search for rat rod bike, and rat rod road bike. Talk about disappointing, all that was coming up was page after page of beach cruiser or balloon tire style bikes with fenders, chain guards, fake gas tanks etc. Every example suffered from the same lame homogenous aesthetic, white wall tires, flame job paint schemes, and off the rack components. Nothing truly represented the rat rod ideals. I was disappointed in the custom cycle world, and decided I'd correct this agregious oversight myself. I'm now on my second incarnation, still in the works, having abandoned my initial project bike for a late l940's CCM with just the right patina. This "rat rod" will embody the spirt of the artform. Instead of looking like a Walmart beach cruiser with a few bolt on goodies and a comfy recumbent position for the rider. My road-rod will have slammed, drop style handlebars, tall saddle, vintage dyno powered headlight, old fashioned horn, etc. This topic may not sound interesting to most gear heads who watch this channel, but when complete, I hope to take the bike to car shows to mingle among the rat rod guys, and my guess is it will be a hit. But, this, as you car guys with projects of your own on the go know, is all a few years and many dollars in the future.

Ok, I like him better now I know more about it. Mostly he didn't cut the roof off and make the paint that way. I now think it's cool, not some ass fing up a good car. Plus he's maintained it. So yeah, well done.

I love that this fellow rebuilt this car, however I don't see the appeal of the primer color, and I don't feel like this is really a rat rod. When you compare it to other European rat rodders like Magnus Walker and Emery, their cars are very different that the stock cars they come from. I guess it is missing the roof but when I read rat rod I imagined something like Magnus Walkers cars.

Neither of those guys are "Rat rodders", if you're going to label their style, it's "Outlaw" or restomod. Ratrodders leave cars unpainted (or worse, trend-jumpers purposely oxidize panels) and adapt parts from other cars -- or even non-car parts -- instead of using factory or normal aftermarket stuff.

Red rattlecan paintjob on the primer parts would make it look much better imo. Would make the lines flow better, have a more consistent overall look but still keep the rat look and would still make purists mad.

Likely wouldn't fit the engine bay. You'd have to cut the chassis and lengthen it, and that would arse up the suspension kinematics and by that point you would have been better off starting with an SLC or Ultima GTR, etc.
