  • A back to basics approach for a short series, practicing minimalism in rhythmic elements, finding a more steady pulse to build additional layers around, and focussing on smaller but rewarding harmonic payoffs over time - I want to find a space between emotive but still.
In this arrangement, the PULSAR-23 patch is built around a large and steady pulse from the BD module that is being driven by a CLOCK and LFO combined in the DIODE module. This creates a steady movement with some variation in expression and timing from the LFO and CLOCK combined. This signal from the DIODE is also outputting via OUTPUT 1 on the rear of the PULSAR, and triggering the HOLD GATE input of the LYRA-8.
The LYRA-8 is responding to the same trigger as the BD module in the PULSAR, providing a groove-lock. The LYRA-8 is being fed into the Slö pedal, which is exaggerating the swelling movement of the voices opening alongside the BD movement in the PULSAR. The voices are tuned to both compliment and oppose each other, which can be heard during the performance, with points of unease and tension, and release and reward for the patient listener.
This simple configuration allowed for a lot of expression, with the 8 available voices in the LYRA tuned by ear to create opposition, but a shift in a mood through a complimentary collection of intervals which are introduced as the piece progress, creating a counterpoint to the opening sections as it evolves. The Slö pedal adds additional texture and movement to the LYRA-8 which worked particularly well in this piece. Additionally, the LYRA responds to touch alongside the HOLD GATE trigger, exaggerating and adding overtones to the gentler voices where needed.
This is my most realised dronology experiment so far.
