If there's anyone who hasn't watched Knives Out yet.... biggest miss out of two centuries. "Good Omens" is a happy show! Especially for a story about the end of the world, literally. But it's funny and witty, and full of love, and very, very humane, even tho half of the characters aren't even humans. And it's based on a brilliant book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, AND Neil himself was the script writer and the showrunner, so he made sure they made something sir Terry would have been proud of. Highly recommend.

    @kzhrar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You have such entertaining video ideas! Always love your content 😍
    Here are my recommendations for:
Heathers (film) - Bunny by Mona Awad (book)
Bunny follows Samantha, a New England MFA student, who is randomly invited to join a clique of rich girls who call each other 'Bunnies.' It's a weird story of magical realism, dark academia, and feels like a fever-dream.
The Good Place (show) - Anxious People Fredrik Backman (book)
Anxious People confronts themes of existentialism and ponders on the value of life, which reminds me of TGP. The book is a unique take on a bank robbery and hostage situation, following a group of strangers whose lives unfold with more common ground than they think. It's charming, heartwarming, and also heart-wrenching; it made me laugh and cry!
Gilmore Girls (book) - The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater (book)
TRB follows Blue and a group of private school boys who are on a quest to find and wake an ancient Welsh King. It's an atmospheric urban fantasy (set in a small town in Virginia), extremely character-driven, and whimsical. TRB is not necessarily feel-good all the way, but Blue's feminist witchy family dynamics reminds me of the girl-power of Gilmore Girls. Also, Blue's initial reluctance to associate with the boys reminds me of Rory's unwillingness to go to private school.
I hope you'll find these useful!

If you need more happy books, I recommend Ascendance of a Bookworm by Miya Kazuki. Book-obsessed girl dies and is reincarnated as commoner child in a medieval world, thus starting her quest to find (or make) her beloved books. Early chapters are a little weak (it was originally published as a web novel) but gets better fast, and now warms my soul when I read it. Anime adaptation was pretty good too, if you'd rather just watch an episode to get the vibe.

If you know any lesser known film adaptations from books, that would be cool to see ! Also, that's about the clearest capturing of what Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is about; I think Tarantino's general goal is to have a strong idea of setting and atmosphere, but be really meandering with the immediate story which definitely makes them hard to describe haha

I know in one of your last videos you mentioned giving recommendations for book videos and one I recently came up with was book recs based on your favorite Ghibli movie. Although I feel like that could be potentially hard because I feel like some Ghibli movies have similar vibes so maybe a video of just book recs that have Ghibli vibes 😂
But while I’m here I have a book rec that I personally thought had some Ghibli vibes and it’s called Egg and Spoon by Gregory Maguire. It takes place sometime in the 1800’s in Russia and these two girls from very different walks of life meet each other and their worlds get flipped upside down. And there’s magic and a bunch of other stuff and I was reminded of a Ghibli film especially with the Baba Yaga part.

Both works share a lot of similatirties and I haven't seen anyone talk about it. Both talk about an old and rich man who suddenly dies and his co-dependant family who want the inheritance. But, interestingly, Knives Out and Crooked House go to totally different directions in the solving of the mystery.

Annihilation was such an interesting book; it’s the best book in the Southern Reach Trilogy.
If there are any fans of the movie Arrival, then I recommend reading the collection of short stories by Ted Chiang, Stories of Your Life and Others. All the stories are interesting, Arrival is based off of the one titled, "Story of Your Life.”
For the Buffy fans I reckon reading the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics would probably be worthwhile.
Some of my recent reads: Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz - Very Jason Bourne-esque.
Bedelia by Vera Caspary - A pulp novel written in 1945 within the “femme fatale” genre.

Ha ha ha only half way through but already sensing a funny pattern:
I didnt like "Knives Out" at all, but loved "Inheritance Games". Thank you so much- it was also thanx to you that I found that book. I agree that "Knives Out" is a well made movie. And all individual elements of it are great: acting, cast, script, set, costume,... but I also felt like I had seen it all before somewhere. None of it was original to me. All nuances might have been an homage to many different sources, but to me they felt more like endless little inferior copies of superior original material.
I really dislike "How to get away with murder", but "The Likeness" sounds really intriguing, thank you for the recommendation. I also started the first season of HTGAWM a while back, but was really bored. I thought it was too predictable and I didn't like the cast.
I would not gravitate to any book with "The Heathers" as a theme, but just finished "A Deadly Education" and enjoyed it immensely!
Finally I just decided to purchase "Ace of Spades" on Audible... and I have been going through my wishlist for days, desperately struggling to find the next thing I really wanted to read. Your review of this book intrigued me. And... that even though I would not at all be interested in reading something, which was in any way like Gossip Girl. (Don't get me wrong- back in the day I loved that show, but I am just not interested in that angle right now). But your introduction intrigued me, because I already have a few theories what was going on in the story ... and now I need to find out if I am right 😜 😜 😜 😜
...ok just finished ❤ wow so many amazing recommendations... will def give Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Ninth House, and Crescent City a try... as well as will watch that murder in xyz street movie(?), too, cause you mentioned it alongside sherlock ... and I love sherlock... maybe also After Dark by Murakami, if I can find an English Audio-Book version anywhere. Thank you so much!!!!! 💓

If anyone is into serious (not happy) fantasy, I've heard that Dreams of the Dying by LIetzau (can't remember first name) is very Inception-like (but very grim in places). Also, for Heathers, a new release that would work well with that is The Ivies by Alexa Dunn.

recommendation for Big Little Lies: if u want the same thriller u might want to also try The Husband's Secret by the same author. And if u like the "moms involved in their children's school activities" (lol idk what's that called) aspect, u might want to read Where'd You Go Bernadette?

Movies or TV shows that were based on obscure, little-known books or plays would be amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these adaptations changed names.

Annihilation (all 3 books in the series) is by far the strangest thing I have ever read. I don't think I finished the last book because it was just so weird and I forgot or couldn't even follow the plot anymore... Not sure I would correlate it with A Quiet Place though, but I don't read much post apocalyptic alien invasion books so I don't know what book would be more similar.

Just a suggestion u can actually read Buffy the vampire slayer. The books I have personally r omnibuses but they’re self contained stories taking place within the tv shows early seasons. Season 1 and 2 specifically I do believe. So if ur more of a reader but what to get an idea for what Buffy is tonally I completely recommend them. They r written w the idea that uve seen the show so they’re light on the character intros and slip in some show mentions but nothing that u have to know for it to make sense.
