Thanks for the run down Chris. I really need to lighten my load. Most of my extraneous gear come in the form of tackle that I never use. Also, surprised you don’t carry a bilge pump. I have one strapped in inside the hull just in case.
Good point Julian. I do usually have one onboard, I forgot to mention that. For off shore trips definitely. I use it when I have a bait tank malfunction as well hahaha. I'm pretty aware of when water gets in my hull, but there are always unforeen things and weather that can come up. You gotta save some weight capacity for when catch them donkeys boi! Cheers
@@chrisblevinsfishing yes, I was planning to get the original hobie one, however the border still closed, I ended up getting a waterproof one, I have around 3 month with it, no issues so far.
Epic timing as I’m just today starting to set up my mirage. TYVM for your expert insight. I have an unrelated question regarding Dropper loop / reverse Dropper loops. What determines when to use one or the other ? Thanks again Chris
Reverse DL I use for fishing medium to larger greenbacks. Very lively and energetic baits. Also with RDL i will be dropping it on sonar marks more than doing long drifts. Traditional DL I will use for smaller, maybe weaker baits such as sardines, spanish, or small greenbacks. I will also only use a regular DL for live squid. I recommend the spider hitch knot over the "dropper loop" knot for all these applications. Also a 3 way swivel works well too, but tying the RDL with spider hitch is by far the fastest and strongest way. Thanks for watching Mark!
I have a couple of stainless carabiners that I attach to the hatch bungies. Also I will put it in the back sometimes, especially in bigger surf when I need the center of gravity towards the stern. Thanks for watching Graham!
Thanks for the rigging tips! recently bought a PA 14 myself. I've paid some dues getting her out of the surf zone though. just curious, do you pedal straight out and use your rudder or do you get your paddle out depending on size of the surf.
Pretty much exactly what you said. I put the drive in and rudder down in thigh deep water and just punch it. I will use the paddle occasionally, but in bigger surf like you said. Mostly I use the paddle to keep perpendicular to the wave and in the inside zone then I will punch it with the drive when I see the lull I want. Thanks for watching Lee.
Score if you can fish that much when you're down you will have a solid shot at getting a good bite. Don't forget about the afternoons too, sometimes the YT bite can be much better in the PM. Cheers Justin!
Chris Blevins thanks for the tip man I was going to do a couple sundowns for sure. Was out at the Coronado’s last weekend hooked up three yellows popped the hook on one and the seals got the other two .
Oh man that sucks haha those dogs down there are insane. The dogs in LJ aren't usually as bad. But that's part of the reason I put a lot of pressure on the fish and try to get them up quick. Fighting them for 20 minutes gives a lot of time for the dogs to find them or them to find the structure. I usually get them up in about 3-5 minutes with 40-50# gear.
Always enjoy these, Chris. I might be launching from LJ on 9/9. Don't think I could keep up with you or Nick Fish paddling my Eddyline, and I being older than dirt, but maybe we can say Hi.
Great video Chris. Straight to the point
No fluff. Newbie to kayak fishing ańd was looking for a simple, clean and practical set for my kayak. Thanks!

Thank you John, hopefully you found something useful.
Had the same issue with that tank switch, nice set up bro, cheers!
Did you swap it out with a similar toggle switch?

Do a surf launch video everyone’s worst nightnare
How do you come in getting out is the easy part
Where do you put your trolley when u are on with water with your live bait tank
My brother and I got Hobie fishing kayaks do you have any tips for launching and being out at the La Jolla kelp beds
Is carrying a bilge pump for off shore fishing silly or smart? I'm outfitting my new Hobie Compass for San Diego.
You should bring a pump it could save you someday or someone else.
@@frankseville2136 Or someone else. Good point. I picked one up. I think I will velcro it tucked away in the hull. Hopefully never need it.
You ever think about putting an outboard on that or a trolling motor?
No not really, if I want a motor I’d probably just get a small skiff.
Hey Chris,
What rod/reel combo do you use most? And do you fish the harbors often?
No I don’t fish the bay very often but some times. I use a bunch of different setups, if you look in my video descriptions I cover several of them.
I’m renting a house out there for my bday sept 3-7 maybe I’ll see you out there should be fishing almost everyday.

Not sure if I will be able to make it then but good luck if you go! Sept is one of the best months usually.

What is your truck bed length?
This is the 6.5’ Tacoma bed
@@chrisblevinsfishing Cool Thanks man. have a taco myself so good to know
@@oceantotable I do use a bed extender though, I wouldn’t say it’s absolutely necessary but definitely feels more secure with it
@@chrisblevinsfishing Yea I have a 14ft kayak but a short bed taco. The extender is working for now but may need to upgrade to a thule/roofrack

Cheewwww Andrew!

I got skunked yesterday haha never even had a bite, only calicos and turd rollers. Looked like it could turn on any day though, get out there! Cheers
