    I Love this channel to death. However as a LFC fan who watches all games . Trent has been taking his defensive responsibilities very seriously compared to the previous two seasons. In prior two seasons he always had that odd lack of awareness in a match where a runner was always in at the far post. He may not like rb thats for sure but he definitely is working hard defensively and putting in a shift this season. Probably has to do with him being vice captain now. Also looks motivated to have a stellar campaign .

      Good analysis but the metrics are a bit inconsistent, not sure against who and which position TAA is being compared with. Its like the analysis wants TAA to become, KDB + Juninho + Roberto Carlos + Bellingham and carry the team alone. Lack benchmark.

    Trent’s bottom level is generational. He changed the game as a full back. Most assists as a defender ever, and most assists as a defender in one season. Even with his last two seasons of being poor defensively , he is a all timer in the prem.

    • @Fortunaatp
      @Fortunaatp 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Trent was absolutely world class in those seasons but to be generational you must do it over several years. Someone like a Marcelo, Dani Alves or Phillip Lahn would be a generational fullback. Pythag is right to put emphasis on 21/22. Trent can still be devastatingly effective but there are still weaknesses to his game in the role which he plays.

    Trent is a player that is micro-analyzed given how unique he is. As of now, he’s achieved everything at RB, being the main creative fulcrum out wide. I have doubts of him playing in midfield and I think it could if the midfield setup plays to his strengths. He’s not a controller like Alonso or dictate play like Modric so playing him high up could make sense. He’s too good to not be utilized and his evolution as a player is intriguing and exciting

    It is tricky - one thing I've noticed since his role change is that, due to his reading of the game and being more central, he's more often intercepting passes and turning them immediately into attacks. I think he has the ability to operate deeper and control but the main thing he needs to improve is his decision making. When he gets the balance right between the Hollywood balls and the sensible passes to circulate it's immense. Thanks for the video!

Except that Phil Foden is also the real deal, and if Trent, Foden and Harvey Elliott were played together the diversity and creativity would be unstoppable. Extraordinarily though, Southgate has never played Foden and Trent on the same pitch. And inexplicably virtually never plays Trent at all. The England setup (and the Premier League for anglo-saxon players) is so messed up that there's plenty to suggest, but no hope of it happening, as far as I can see. The mass media is obsessed with Jude Bellingham, and however badly he plays for England, that's how they will set up. Everyone else is now just an afterthought.

    Sorry but this is where the rating system completely falls apart. How do you rate Trent on par with Mudryk after he played about a dozen games in the Ukrainian League. Trent has already been part of the best defence in Europe twice, had a POTY level season in 19/20, was an absolute game changer in a CL winning campaign and had 21 goal contributions in 21/22. A run of the mill winger like Mudryk will do well to accomplish any one of these things over his entire career.

    • @PythagorasinBoots
      @PythagorasinBoots  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      We don’t do current ratings. It’s based on how the ratings may end up when their careers are all done with. So someone like Mudryk whose at the start of his career is clearly not going to have the same current rating as a Trent who is a lot more established as a footballer. Also Predictions are predictions they’re not gospel.

    • @martinszabo5578

      @@PythagorasinBoots Thought the 76 represented his current rating, which is the same as in the Mudryk video. But if it isnt i still disagree with the premise that someone who has delivered some of the best individual stats of anyone in their position and been a lynchpin of a highly dominant side can have a relatively low max potential. He was arguably the best player in the PL towards the end of last season.

    • @PythagorasinBoots
      @PythagorasinBoots  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @martinszabo5578 just because a player is better now doesn’t mean they have the higher potential. That doesn’t mean you are wrong about these two players in particular but as a general principle that would be flawed. Let us not forget someone like Bale in his early part of career would have been laughed at for being given a good predicted and max potential rating.

      There's about 2 years between mudryk
      Ones achieved nothing, other everything. I think the clear fact one relies on physicals ie (pace) vs technique shows you can't can't compare the two.
      Mudryk hasn't hit even the " top winger in league" level at 22 ( 23 next couple week) and barely shown he ever will, if trent retire now ( just turned 25) and mudryk (about to turn 23) retired at 25. Do you think anyone will ever talk about mudryk again?

    This is got to be the best player focused football analytics channel out there. I agree that TAA is not a secure controller of the ball like the world class greats like Pirlo and Busquets, hence he can't play in midfield full time. I rather he play his current position as IRB, where if he loses possession it wont be as costly as losing it right in front of the centre halves and yet he can come inside when attention on him is less. Being out on the wide also allows him the full view of the pitch, so he can make his raking passes and pick his time to go forward, be it out on the wing or through the middle.

    Your SWOT analysis of Trent is spot on. I think he's a RM in a 4-4-2 or inside RM in a 3-5-2, however these systems are out of favor. Ironically Luis Diaz is also a 4-4-2 LM and the duo remind me of Beckham and Giggs from the late 90s.
    But it's all about the system, Beckham wouldn't even start in Klopp's gegenpressing 4-3-3 where midfielders sacrifice everything for the front 3. More than that, Liverpool have so many midfielders that Trent's inability to consistently carry the ball, dribble, and defend is a problem. He can only be the 5th build up player in a 3-2-5 set up against low blocks.
    Unless a coach switches to a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2, I sadly can't see him improving.

      @@PythagorasinBoots I hope so, let's say with Bradley plays behind Trent who would pull inside. These systems fell out of favor because, allegedly, more triangles, off the ball movement, and predictability is possible through the middle.
      At times this year, even when Liverpool were playing well, I felt that Szoboszlai, Trent, and Salah occupied the same space a little too much.
      Which brings me to the next question. Salah's shot power has declined and I don't see it improving. What do you think about Matias Soulé and Loïs Openda? The latter seems like a stockier and less fragile Jota.

    Under Slot's patient & systematic build up play from the back Trent will be perfect as the inverted full back taking on the Geertruida role. Trent said in a interview that he finds Brighton's style of play where they carefully & deliberately build up from the back exciting to watch but difficult to play against. That's pretty much how Slot got his Feyenoord side to start attacks, with Trent coming into midfield from full back given him extra time on the ball without a presser getting straight to him will suit him better than just being integrated into midfield. If we can sign a DM who's also comfortable in possession like a Zubimendi or Varela to play alongside MacAllister who I'd presume would take up the Timber box to box role, the control we would have between the defence & midfield in the build up phase would be water tight. Trent will be a huge player under Slot & l think Slot will take Trent's game even further

      i think Trent suits playing better as a rb than in a double pivot, and so far trent has been decent at RB under Slot, the idea of him being an attacking midfielder as suggested by the video creator is interesting though and in Slot's team he'll never get to to play in that kind of role in a 433, very intrigued to see what Trent will do with his contract situation, i love him a liverpool and he's been really good at right back under Slot, but realistically does he want to play in that position all his life? You have to also think what team would take trent and allow him to play as an attacking midfielder in a 433, because real madrid currently play 4231 and if they get alonso theyll play 343 and neither suits trent, trent for me as a player i really love and i want him to reach goat levels, it would be great to see him in an attacking midfield role as a 433, and i am a liverpool fan .... i thought at the euros we should play trent and bellingham as LCM and RCM together, bellingham played as a LCM at birmingham, maybe that could happen at madrid... that kind of 433 suits valverde and camavinga... i'm not a madrid fan, but i love trent a lot, 433 at liveprool would work with szoboszlai or gravenberch on the other side, mac a wouldn't suit it, but not sure if that will happen.. got to focus on the now and enjoy that

    I get the suggestion of having him further up the pitch but those long balls from deep are a huge threat and can push teams back? Especially with the pace of Nunez, Salah and even Diaz in behind. When teams are pushed back there is less opponents pressing high- then Trent enters the free role to try break them down. I still view him as RB when building up under pressure/ when we are defending.

    I still don't like the idea of moving him to midfield, at least without having someone to hold his hand and control the game. He is a luxury player, in the same way Messi was, in the essence that his offensive value is great but defensively he is a negative. The difference with Messi and Trent(2018-2021) was that the team around them was so great that they did not necessarily need to do all that much defensively but as soon as the level drop, their value became less and less, him being in the Premier League is not helping because the talent disparity in this league is not big. Also Klopp's loyalty has also been a blessing for him because a cutthroat personality would have caused him to lose all confidence.
    If Liverpool are bent on keeping him then a lot needs to change in how they play between now and next season because wherever he plays on the pitch it will be the same story of being amazed at the vast difference between him going forward and him defending.

    73-74 in my opinion. I find his attacking game rather overstated and his defensive game to be extremely abhorrent. His consistency, toughness and mentality are peak however. He's also a set piece ace.
    Wish you could have included Reece James in the statistical comparisons because that seems to be his #1 rival. Although Trent wins a lot more, and is much more healthy and it seems like Reece's career won't last much longer.
    Trent = Beckham 2.0.

    I appreciate the level of work that goes into these so dont really want to take a dump on them but Trent is already generational. You dont jump in and out of that category, you either are or arent and he has been for several years. I do agree that i dont think right back is going to be his position for much longer. If you analyse how Liverpool are progressing this season theres more and more emphasis on getting Trent into midfield. Analysing if hes press resistant enough is difficult because his exposure to central areas has been limited because he's spent his primary development phase playing fullback - despite him being a primarily a midfielder from u18/u21 backwards. He needs to learn how to receive on the half turn under pressure - the pressure being the key point there. He's shown he can do that in an area where you only need to beat one winger but he's working on it now in a congested area of the pitch. But from a supporters perspective who's watched us this season it's something that is noticeable improving game on game.
    I understand the sentiment that he might be better as an 8 but the recruitment of Szoboszlai effectively has removed that idea. Hes good there as a break glass option but i think its easily conceavable that he adapts to becoming a number 6. And that position is as much about experience as it is talent. Like i can tell you now that Trent is every bit as good as Xabi Alonso was at the same age currently, with the benfit of him being a better athlete. Xabi only really started showing real consistency in the role from 27 onwards.
    Its a work in progress but I've no doubt that he could quite easily continue to be a generational talent as a 6, either as a lone 6 or in a double pivot.

    @dandane3819 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Your analysis is always "will x be GOAT in his position", or "why x is not GOAT in his position". Is that the point of football? Not how players function within systems and teams? Why on earth would Trent need to "improve his long passing" if what he does is sufficient for what his coach wants? Is whatever limitation you see in his long passing purely a result of his skills, and not perhaps a function of team play?
    In your analysis you seem to expect players to become rounded to be the best, but coaches rarely push for an elite but even distribution of skills within individual players, rather they try to find balance within the function of the team, if at all.

    • @PythagorasinBoots
      @PythagorasinBoots  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Not every rating we will get right. So even if we get X wrong that doesn’t mean we think X is better than Y. Every video we do we are trying to improve the metrics upon which we use to get the next rating more accurate. Not an exact science at the moment.
      As for Hojlund I do think he’s been written off way too quickly. First season at a big club which is very dysfunctional and coming off a severe back issue and don’t think he’s fully recovered.
