@ 9:40: That story about how you "learned" to draw from your aunt was very touching, and relatable to me too!
I was my maternal grandmother who taught me to draw and colour; when I was like 5, I would totally BS my way through dinosaur-themed colouring books, until one day, my maternal grandmother suddenly stopped me, and let me know how nonsensical my shading techniques were! She taught me how to make shadows and how not to muddle light and darkness between the dinosaurs' tails, other body parts like scales and armour, and the trees or mountains featured in all of these blank pages! Something I'll never forget is how I learned light and perspective from my grandmother as a little kid, well over a decade before any art class in middle or high school!

I appreciate your criticism of Quentin Tarantino's work, despite being a big fan of his. His more recent work, especially, has been a little more sloppy and disjointed in the storytelling. I still love his imagination and the depth of his characters, even in movies like Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time...; films that struggle to tell a coherent story.

    • @akosleoszilagyi2529

@@alexsanders7404 Who are your Top 5 directors?

    • @alexsanders7404
      @alexsanders7404 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@akosleoszilagyi2529 Quentin Tarantino is number one. Scorsese is number two. After that, I'm not sure I have favorites, but I love Richard Linklater's voice, especially in his Before Sunrise trilogy. I feel like I have to put Spielberg in there (commercial, sure, but he is a hell of cinematic storyteller). There are other directors that have just had great moments in their careers, like Spike Lee, Mel Gibson, Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, Brian De Palma, and Christopher Nolan, but I don't think their filmography has been as consistently satisfying for me. I still need to take the time to delve into the filmographies of Hitchcock and Kurosawa. The little that I've seen of Hitchcock (Vertigo and Psycho) makes me want to put him on that list. As for new or current directors, I'm really excited about the Safdie brothers and Alfonso Cuaron (I know he is not "new" but he's still somewhat new to me). There are a lot of foreign filmmakers that I'm unaware of, I'm sure. Here's the other thing... Stanley Kubrick is not one of my favorite directors. However, his movies are amazing. But when I finish one of his movies, for multiple reasons, I find myself not wanting to watch it for a very long time and I bet you a lot of people feel that way about his films. Kevin Smith (Jersey boy, here) has a wonderful voice, but to me his only great film is Red State, and Clerks 2 is perhaps his best personal statement. What's cool about conversations about directors is you always wonder "Oh man, what if he kept doing these types of films or what if he tried doing this type of film?" Tarantino, to me, won't have as many people asking that question because his films and his characters are so celebrated. Scorsese has pretty much had three film careers in one, if you consider how long he's been directing and how many different types of films he's made. So there's a lot less "what if?"with those two.

      @@alexsanders7404 My Top 5:
      1. Quentin Tarantino
      2. Christopher Nolan
      3. Martin Scorsese
      4. Guy Ritchie
      5. Steven Spielberg
I really dislike Richard Linklater's Before trilogy, because it's very sentimental, and I'm a rational type.
Gibson, De Palma and the two Scotts are great.
Hitchcock and Kurosawa are amazing, but I have to finish their filmography. Kubrick... The only movie I've seen but couldn't rate is 2001. I found Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove overrated for the first time. But The Shining is top tier.
I haven't seen much from Spike Lee. Do the right thing and Jungle fever are great, but then, his brain broke. He showed Malcolm X as a hero, when he was a black supremacist.
Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban and Gravity are good, but overrated.
I'm planning to see Good Time and Uncut Gems, and doing a Kevin Smith-marathon.

It may be a good time to review The Right Stuff, as the real Chuck Yeager died a few days ago. For those who haven't seen this 1983 film, it's an epic, humorous, and moving journey from men breaking the sound barrier to going into space. The new TV series that just aired on Disney, sadly, didn't include Yeager in the story. The 1983 film, however, treats Yeager as a legend.

@@akosleoszilagyi2529 What I really meant was that a movie can be as long as it wants to be. If a movie doesn't work for you, it is because of its content, not its length. We have movies that are 9 hours long like Shoah, to short films that last as short as one second. If a film works, it is worth your time no matter how long. If we include television, this becomes even less of an issue. There are TV shows that lasted 20 seasons (and untold number of hours) and still get high ratings, while others that lasted a few episodes but no one watched.
