You're becoming my go to movie critic on this platform. You are really well reflected, I love the way you analyze and dissect the movies you review. Also, I think you kinda introduced me to Jodorowsky, so thank you for that! Congrats on 60k, well deserved ❤
New fan here from your Oppenheimer review… been binging a lot of your videos. I appreciate the way you are able to articulate why you feel the way you do; it is inspirational! Congrats on 60K 🤙
I really enjoy listening to your unique perspective. You’re definitely one of my favorite reviewers, and one of the few I subscribe to. Congrats on 60K
Inside and Limbo are my favorite games too!! I gasped when you named them, so happy to hear any appreciation for those perfect little foggy indie gems.
Hugely recommend the game Soma. It takes a premise and gradually, slowly twists it until you don’t recognize how you’re supposed to feel anymore. It’s brilliant. Best scifi horror game writing i’ve ever experienced. Filmwise, if you haven’t seen Chytilova’s Daisies I absolutely adore that film and i think you might appreciate its sense of humor. The director almost got jailed for making it, even though it is wonderfully funny.
Well done on the 60k.. When you mentioned Akira.. My toes started to curl.. In a large-ish cinema nearby. They were doing screenings of some super duper anime films. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue, and lots of Ghibli.. I told my parents "WE MUST SEE AKIRA!" "Well, what's it about?" "seriously, it's best you go in completely cold.." Fast forward about 2 hours after the screening.. My parents, were just incredibly confused that I thought they'd like this anime.. Though they absolutely loved the animation.
Damn, I'm pleased to see you grow in subscribers as quickly as you have since I discovered your channel. More TH-cam movie reviewers need to have the critical thinking, vocabulary, and insight you provide.
Maggie this was a great Q & A I will keep asking my question about why you sit on the floor for every milestone until you answer it! Also would be interested to hear you talk more about psychedelics because that is my master’s research topic and I loved your take on Gasper Noe’s Climax
I’m pretty certain that she’s answered it in a Q&A. From what I remember she essentially said that there’s no particular reason, she just finds it comfortable and feels that it’s the right level of casual/formal.
Curious as to your thoughts on Five Easy Pieces. It’s probably my favorite Nicholson performance (I have a weakness for those aimless drifter kind of movies). While his character is flawed and generally unlikable, the angst that always bleeds through-despite all his attempts to repress it-makes it really hard not to empathize with him. I was watching your Shutter Island review recently and your description of Leo’s acting style reminded me of this movie. It sounds kinda paradoxical, but I think Jack Nicholson’s acting style somehow encapsulates the subtleties of angst while also being infamous for his really over the top style. It’s something that I really love about him. He’s just as good at radiating this professional composure in so many of his roles, but knowing him there’s always the tension that he could explode at any second. A perfect little scene that embodies this juxtaposition is the whole “Bob, gun.” scene in Batman 89. I don’t even watch his movies that often, but it’s trains of thought like these that remind me why he’s one of my favorite actors.
I’m literally cuing up Akira steaming on Hulu now for the first time seeing per your recommend as a new big fan of your amazing intellectual insights, talents, vines n takes on all 💯🎉👏🏻
I am glad I stumbled onto your Channel just by chance. The reviews I have seen are excellent and insightful. My only criticism is that you don't mention much of the plot of the movie that you are reviewing (like your Videodrome review). Since you are an Al Pacino fan, have you seen the movie "Paterno" ? Please do a review on that. Also, what is that picture in the green frame on your shelf ? Was that a ballet picture ? Have you ever seen the Charles Bronson movie, "The Family" a/k/a "Violent City". This is one of the first movies that uses the flashback sequences as part of its narrative. It also has an excellent score by the Italian composer, Ennio Morricone. Since you review films from different genres and different time periods, check this out when you get the chance. Keep up the great work.
On AI... I saw an ad for Old Spice right before watching this video. It was the first time it really clicked that I was watching an AI, de-aged Dolph Lundgren, and what was momentarily amusing suddenly filled me with dread. Real, existential dread. On I, Tonya... I always saw someone like Jennifer Jason Leigh as Tonya Harding. Sadly no modern analog comes to mind. On doing a show with Nerdrotic and Chris Gore... I love both of those guys, and I share their opinions on many things. But I watch DeepFocusLens to feel like I'm part of a conversation with someone sitting on the floor. Someone whose expertise, passion, and insight I'm a little in awe of, honestly. Likewise Critical Drinker is a genius at wringing some truth from the Hollywood morass and summing up an insightful, and frequently deeply felt sentiments held by many fans of popular movies. But he doesn't often engage with /cinema/. Nor does he display a big picture view of the medium in the way that Maggie does.
Inside was a great experience. One of those games that actually made me cry, but I didn't really understand why... it's transcendental, one of the best indies ever
I would like you to do a movies of 60’s, 70’s, etc. movies from 50’s good idea. Also, maybe essential 10-15 movies you like. Hard to narrow to 10-15 of course. For me it’s in no order: 1. Star Wars (despite mess now, original a classic) 2. Aliens 3. Godfather 1 and 2 4. Goodfellas 5. Casino (I live mob movies) 6. Wizard of Oz (I know and enjoyed one movie from 1930’s, so still a classic. 7. Indiana Jones: Raiders (franchise collapses). 8. Poltergeist 9. Pulp Fiction 10. Oppenheimer (Loved it). 11. Shawshank Redemption of course 12. National Lampoons Vacation remains a classic comedy. 13. Citizen Kane (again you should see this classic) 14. The Dark Knight (if I must add a comic book movie, this is the best). 15. The Hateful Eight So many more. LOL
Are there portals of ideas that can't be divorced from certain subject matter. Eg murder and violence or prejudice and ideology. Can you see them being deconstructed
Having you and Roger Ebert compared by a viewer is baffling and quite fascinating actually...:) How does one even think of these things?:) Really strange way of paying a compliment...or was it AI that wrote in? Take care and congratulations on the 60k subs. Well earned! PS: I'd like to know what you think of the Puss In Boots movies. Maybe one day they'll get mentioned:)
As for In-N-Out, try double double protein style, if you haven't already. That and / or double double toasted buns with no salt. Which is basically the upgraded version of the normal double double.
You actually would be perfect as a guest talking to Chris Gore and Gary from Nerdrotic, BECAUSE you don’t know or care about any new Hollywood movie, and because you’re against woke agendas. You’ll know exactly what to say when Chris and Gary bring up topics, about the likes of Rachel Zegler, Disney remakes, female representation, and all that. You definitely will have something very profound and meaningful to say. They would LOVE to have you on!
A honest question: Why do you not use custom Thumbnails? Atleast with some text and movie names? Ive been wondering this for quite sometime and im sorry if you have amswered this. I just want more and more people to discover this channel.
@@richardlyth oh she is doing great. But the amazing content she's been pumping out for 14 years, Id just want more people to hear it. And its a tremendous help financially! So I really hope she reaches more people
Omg I've never heard you do the "basic bitch" voice! That was hilarious. ("I don't like In and Out..") Btw, Wendys spicy bacon jalapeno chicken sandwich with the little onion crisps was the best damn fast food sandwich ever and they discontinued it! They have a "Ghost Pepper ranch" sandwich right now which is pretty damn hot if not nearly as good as the jalapeno one.
one of my favorite youtube channels, congrats!🍻

Very sincere congrats to you!! You are maybe the most intelligent and well spoken critic on all of TH-cam!
Your Q&A presentations are so enjoyable because it feels you are genuinely engaging with the viewers and not just talking at us.
