The Travelers of the Multiverse unearthed arcana seems to have finally confirmed that a 5e spelljammer book is on the way and we’ve got a bunch of new interplanar races to play with. Thri-Kreens are practically the poster children of beloved settings like spelljammer and dark sun and it’s exciting to see these bugs skitter their way into 5th edition D&D. One of the most alien creatures that players have had the privilege to play, Thri-Kreens are essentially praying mantis people. They’re big insects with sentient intellect driven by heightened survival instincts. But what’s it like to play them now that they’ve reached 5e? Are their features buggy or a dark sun triumph? Grab some protection from the post-apocalypse and try not to act like a tasty fly as we go through everything you need to know.

my first thought about hearing the extra small hands was one small hand for spell casting focus and one small hand for the somatic spell requirement. It's complete caster kit while still being able to sword and board.
Finally I can have my beloved idea of Bugcules can be realized
Thri-Kreen, bounty hunter background
3 fighter, psi warrior subclass. Dueling fighting style.
All the rest rogue, soul knife subclass.
Separate pools of psi die.
Psychic blades can be temporarily manifested to somewhat replicate two weapon fighting since they add modifier to bonus action attack. The blades don’t exist at the same time, so they each benefit from dueling damage too. Manifest them in the little arms.
Wield a shield for more AC.
Pull out a rapier for potentially making use of reaction attacks.
Action to gain advantage on stealth, cunning action to actually hide, psi bolstered knack if you somehow fail the stealth check.
A Thri-Kreen soulknife/paladin could be cool too. (At least 9 in rogue for teleport and accuracy though) "there are no wounds, why did he die?" "I like my food in tact" beast barb is fun too though, hmm combining all 3, I'll have to think on the lvl spread, but it does sound interesting.
To be honest I would play one of these.
They look fun.
Though I do think that in the published version that they are going to get a lot of sentence check ups. To fix the potentially broken wording in the abilities. 😅

Recently I played a Thri-Kreen Gloom Stalker, sniper, named "Stab-o-tage". It was terrifying!
Im thinking of a homebrew thrikreen moon druid, flavoured as a carnivorous plant creature that draws prey in or camouflages, and then reveals its massive jaws to eat its prey. Then, after having eaten them, it can take the form of its food (Thus circle of the moon)

Baldurs Gate and the new film got me into dnd. I started about 2 months ago and haven't looked back, will deffo be playing a thri kreen at some point!

Monk was the first class that came to mind lol. Druid was 2nd.
I have a Bloodhunter mutant + Fighter echo night thrii kreen that uses mutagens to alter its body as if it were weapons, and the echo is its bloody duplicate. Pretty fun

Chameleon Carapace: Ever see a Mimcry Bug like a Stick Bug or a Orchid Mantis? I'm picturing that this basically allows you all versions of this that players can think of and DMs allow
Secondary Arms: this now fully allows duel wielding hand crossbows. That's all I got.
Classes: I think Ranger works too. You can use a long bow and two weapon fight without a problem.

Thri-Kreen Ranger Rogue Dual wielding bows or Quad wielding crossbows.
plus Spirit Warrior Bug Mech.
Finally a fun stealthy paladin. Add some beast barb and soulknife and you a terrifying little carnivore ready to pounce just about anything.
I imagen the rune knight or giant barbarian are also very good options a praying mantis is known as a grappler of big prey.
I am thinking on building a thri-Kreen fighter class.
Perfect for Artificer. And also they are bug people so who wouldn't like it.

It's fantasy, doesn't have to be 100% accurate.

Beat boxing is a perfectly acceptable verbal component. Mine casts spells using binary clicks/machine code as verbal components.
