All they had to do was make it a best 2 out of 3 falls match. Bret wins the first fall then Shawn wins the next two. Bret said he just wanted Shawn to show him respect before he dropped him the title. A 2 out of 3 falls accomplishes that.
Or drop it to Taker the next night or have someone challenge him immediately for the title like Hogan did to Yokozuna after Yokozuna beat Bret. Or let Shawn win via interference the ref didn’t see. Yet the clean win in his home country with his own finisher is just messed up.

Stg, there’s multiple video/audio clips on this situation and have been available for years. Bret hart wrestling with shadows, Bret’s OWN docu, there is no mention of said conversation between Bret and Shawn where Shawn said “I won’t even put Bret over. And I won’t protect Bret”. Do I find it hard to believe he said it? No. But there was NEVER any mention of that story until like 2009. He brought it up to Shawn. Shawn didn’t remember it but said “I could have said it”. My point is, Bret keeps changing the reasons why he didn’t want to lose. There are multiple wrestlers that say Bret didn’t “like to do jobs” for people. Were Shawn and the kliq pricks? Probably. But EVERYONE that has ever been anyone (except undertaker) in the business has acted the way Bret acted about losing. Bret just went about it differently. You don’t get to leave a company and take your company car with you. End of story. No matter what you did there, it’s their property. Get tf over it already.
Why does everyone assume that bret would have left the building in possession of the belt. Vince could have held onto it. How has nobody thought of that
As much as I love Bret (he was my guy after Hogan), I wouldn’t have changed the screwjob. Vince becomes the perfect heel to Austin, whereas Vince was just another announcer (for most part) prior to that. Only thing I would change if I had the power, was preventing Owens death and Bret getting hurt at the end of 99. Even then, I doubt Bret would go to wwf in 2001…maybe after a stint in TNA
It all came down 2 Shawn saying he wudnt put bret over. It's not a case of bret losing in Canada. I wud refuse 2 do a job if somebody said they wud never do that 4 me.

The argument over Vince selling has never held any water and Nash and Sean should know that having worked on films. WWE didn’t have creative control over Wrestling with Shadows, it wasn’t their image to manipulate. Then WWE tried to stop it from airing
First of all he's from Calgary not Montreal. They aren't even remotely close geography or culturally. The next night Raw was live from Ottawa which is an hours drive from Montreal and the next night was a Raw taping from Cornwall Ontario, the famous Bret screwed Bret episode which I was at. Bret has stated that he wanted to surrender the title on Raw in Ottawa the following night even though he was no longer under contract to the WWF. Vince couldn't take that chance.
I doubt it would have happened because I reckon it wouldn't have reached that point. If Nash and Hall were there Austin doesn't get KOTR and he would have had to play politics against the Kliq. Would DX have formed as it was, under that name? They only get that because Hart named them it, and does the whole America vs Canada thing happen? The whole chain of history is out the window as well know it if The Outsiders stayed.

This answer epitomizes why I think Kev is great. As a Canadian it is government mandated I must side with Brett (although Owen has always been my favourite Hart). The “I didn’t grow up in this business” comment is as poignant as “if you’ve been working the people that long, why would I stop the work.” No animosity, no hate just an honest perception of this “incident.” Side question: did the weed that Kev and Brett smoke supplied by Teddy? 😂
The original question is moot and it can’t be answered because it assumes everything else would remain the same other than Nash being at the WWE. In reality, if Nash was there in Montreal, that would mean he never went over to WCW, which means there wouldn’t be an NWO, which means WCW wouldn’t have gotten the boost it got to put it over the WWF/E, which wouldn’t have put Vince in the desperate situation that made him give Brett a massive contract, let alone let get out of it to go to WCW.
1… Vince could have picked anybody else to beat Bret and Bret would’ve been fine with it 2.. next night on Raw, Bret could’ve dropped it or given it back. He would never take it to another company and throw it in the garbage, it’s BRET
Bret screwed Bret .. You don’t get to determine when/who you drop the belt to you drop it when your boss tells you to PERIOD Bret could’ve saved everyone the headache and just did business
Nash would have been a force to keep the peace between Shawn and Bret. There would have been no screw job without the nWo killing WWE in the ratings. Bret vs Shawn was money for everyone. Nash would have kept them on the same page.
Vince was an idiot for not having Bret drop the belt to someone else before Survivor Series, knowing that the personal animosity between those two has reached a boiling point. Never had a problem with a rereleased video...wait what?
Idk where the confusion lies because Bret has said a million times it wasn’t about losing in Canada it was about putting Shawn over in Canada. He said he would’ve lost to anyone else because Shawn told him he would not do the same for Bret
Me in that situation would just have asked the favor to get out celebrating. Not by winning the match, but by getting my "heat back" in the end by a beat down or something like that.
Kev pro tip bro use gorilla foam but it only works on alarms with moving parts .....😂😂
So ballsy of Sean to say that to Bret 🤣
Wasnt raw the next night in Toronto? Why would he drop it in Toronto rather then Montreal. I think it was in Toronto anyway. Edit: it was in Ottawa so wrong city but same premise.
Montreal ScrewJob was the greatest work ever. = Greatest story Bret Hart ever told in the ring.
1.) Bret wasn't going to be on Nitro the next night. That was still a few weeks away.
2.) Shawn wouldn't have dropped to Bret, so Bret reciprocated. Bret would have dropped to anyone, even the next night on Raw. He even mentioned a few names of guys who may not have been "ready" to be champ yet (Ken and Steve among them).
The thing is Bret probably would have dropped it to anyone else at Survivor Series, anyone but Shawn. But for some reason Shawn was the only thing Vince cared about at that time.
I get it ... And I respect the fact that Bret took the business seriously...but at the end of the day that belt didn't belong to him... it's called giving back to the business... regardless of Shawn's lack of respect for him..
The story of Murray is Legendary, until Tatanka went to the boys in front of the office and said “are you boys gonna smoke some Murray tonight.”
I went out for dinner with Bret in Toronto one night and lit a joint and started walking down the street, until a cop pulled up beside us. Bret Palmed the joint to me and the cop got out of his car and said “hey your Bret Hart, can I get your autograph.
The greatest work of all time.. the greatest trio of intertwined stars, Bret/Shawn/Austin.. Bret beats Austin, Shawn beats Bret, Austin beats Shawn… ATTITUDE ERA takes off to the moon.
What the guy speaking to Shaun misses.
Is that Shaun was suppose to return the favor at the next WM and made up an injury
The whole argument about Vince was worried Bret would show up on Nitro with the belt is bullshit. If Vince was that worried he could hold onto the belt personally and only give it to Bret before he heads out to his match.
He had to get the belt from Bret to do that u think Bret was going handle over the title to him lol backstage
@@TheGoat-y8y Why wouldn't Bret do that?
He wasn't worried about Bret showing up on Nitro. He was worried about Bischoff announcing on that next Nitro that Bret was coming before he dropped the belt.
@@TheGoat-y8y you really think, with all the respect and deference for the business bret shows, he would've retained the WWE title (achieving the exit he wanted) and still screwed over Vince by taking the title on WCW TV?
meh...me no no bro. bret had lost the title several times before. even in a screwy wrestlemania match when hogan shows up and take the title. he never didn't do business before. why would he suddenly stop doing business after 16 years with the company?
@@mox19380 when did I say he was taking it to wcw tv ? Never once said that I just said he wasn’t going just hand it over backstage regardless Bret had no right to say what he was going do he didn’t win shit Vince put the belt on him he wanted it back it shouldn’t have been a issue at all
If I was on the plane with my kids it wouldn't have gone down like that.
This was the turning point where wwe started to climb against wcw.
Technically it was a work and a shoot at the same time.
Where's Kevin's eyebrows?
Why does everyone assume that bret would have left the building in possession of the belt. Vince could have held onto it. How has nobody thought of that
As much as I love Bret (he was my guy after Hogan), I wouldn’t have changed the screwjob. Vince becomes the perfect heel to Austin, whereas Vince was just another announcer (for most part) prior to that. Only thing I would change if I had the power, was preventing Owens death and Bret getting hurt at the end of 99.
Even then, I doubt Bret would go to wwf in 2001…maybe after a stint in TNA
First time hearing Bret loved smoking weed haha Thas cool bcz me to and Im a big Bret fan
Maybe bret would've dropped it to nash if he was there. But it's pointless to wonder what if anyway
It's in the script. Nobody but Vince would have been able to change it.
Scott Hall said multiple times he believed Montreal was a work. After hearing his argument, I'm not sure...
Nah that event effected Bret’s life to drastically for it to be a work
Lets just be honest. Nash would have been stoned in the back with his cheeks puckered too. He do nothing to change anything 😂
Bret was going to drop the belt on Raw the next night anyway. They really screwed dude.
It all came down 2 Shawn saying he wudnt put bret over. It's not a case of bret losing in Canada. I wud refuse 2 do a job if somebody said they wud never do that 4 me.
you may not like it but I feel nash I ride with my brothers thick and thin
Can I have the minutes of my life back from that hotel story?!? lol wtf he’s gotta be currently high.
WCW dropped the ball on the biggest angle ever
I always wanted to know how Diesel would have fit in doing the attitude era
And Razor Ramon too
They would have been epic!
Like a hand in glove
@bobnichols3233 yeah I think Triple H could have kept Scott Hall in check better with his drinking and Drug addictions
@ also when you think about it, Diesel and Razor were both characters that had to be turned from heel to face because the fans cheered them. A lot like Austin and Rock.
Bret was in WWF at the time for another number of weeks. Henceforth he could not have been on the next nitro.
A lie
Kid and Hall said they thought it was a work.
Either I have the worst case of Deja Vu or…Nash has definitely told that story before 😂
Hes told it before
They recycle some clips sometimes by combining shorter ones into a longer one. I think that's what this is.
Bret wouldn't even let Nash powerbomb him. You think Bret was going to listen to him to drop the title!
No Bret wouldn’t let Nash cover him and have Taker make the save. As it didn’t make sense going into Mania 12, with people thinking a Heel diesel was the legit champion.
The always elaborate Nash.
9:14…. Kevin nails it right there. If the Montreal Screwjob was a work, it was the greatest work in the history of the business. It’s the Mona Lisa of worked wrestling storylines. The people who were deeply involved and in the know… Bret, Vince, Shawn etc…. would never want to come out and admit it was all planned and staged. Why would they?
Bret didn’t get in the way of business he would have dropped the belt to Taker , Austin or Shamrock.
It was a WORK
I swear, it's like pulling teeth with Nash sometimes. When you give an answer, big man, Explain. These are not yes or no questions. We want the details. What was happening back stage? What was being said in the meetings? What was the plan? Who was involved? This is a Talk Show. Talk.
If Shawn never told Bret he would never drop the strap to him. This wouldn't be a problem, and you should know that Mr. Oliver and I have mad respect for kevin, always going to bat for Bret
But if Hart had creative control like he said in his contract then he had reason to say screw this
"Does Brett have a sense of humor?" Just watch some of the clips of him doing the shoot interviews in England.
Montreal screw job was vince Bret was the second time Wendy Richter was the first time
The argument over Vince selling has never held any water and Nash and Sean should know that having worked on films. WWE didn’t have creative control over Wrestling with Shadows, it wasn’t their image to manipulate. Then WWE tried to stop it from airing
Forget about the screw job, that shaving cream story is hilarious 😂
First of all he's from Calgary not Montreal. They aren't even remotely close geography or culturally. The next night Raw was live from Ottawa which is an hours drive from Montreal and the next night was a Raw taping from Cornwall Ontario, the famous Bret screwed Bret episode which I was at. Bret has stated that he wanted to surrender the title on Raw in Ottawa the following night even though he was no longer under contract to the WWF. Vince couldn't take that chance.
I will never put you over..now put me over in Detroit..please🙄😂
I doubt it would have happened because I reckon it wouldn't have reached that point. If Nash and Hall were there Austin doesn't get KOTR and he would have had to play politics against the Kliq. Would DX have formed as it was, under that name? They only get that because Hart named them it, and does the whole America vs Canada thing happen? The whole chain of history is out the window as well know it if The Outsiders stayed.
HHH kevs friend put over Warrior, I thought the kilq had each others back? lol, I guess that's why HHH is where he is. ;) .
It wasn't Brett hometown, though, or just his home country. That'd be like you not wanting to boost a belt in the united states
But scott said he thinks it was a work
Yeah, I’d totally trust the opinion of someone who wasn’t even there…and if it was a work, then Shawn, Vince, hhh and Bret deserve academy awards for their performance, including lying to friends and family
This answer epitomizes why I think Kev is great. As a Canadian it is government mandated I must side with Brett (although Owen has always been my favourite Hart). The “I didn’t grow up in this business” comment is as poignant as “if you’ve been working the people that long, why would I stop the work.” No animosity, no hate just an honest perception of this “incident.”
Side question: did the weed that Kev and Brett smoke supplied by Teddy? 😂
Nah, HAD to be Canadiavley motivated.
I never had a problem watching Bret get screwed.
He already told this story before.
People who still think it was a work are the same who think Benoit is innocent.
"No."
1… Vince could have picked anybody else to beat Bret and Bret would’ve been fine with it
2.. next night on Raw, Bret could’ve dropped it or given it back. He would never take it to another company and throw it in the garbage, it’s BRET
Bret screwed Bret .. You don’t get to determine when/who you drop the belt to you drop it when your boss tells you to PERIOD Bret could’ve saved everyone the headache and just did business
Bret didn't leave for wcw the next night
Nash would have been a force to keep the peace between Shawn and Bret. There would have been no screw job without the nWo killing WWE in the ratings. Bret vs Shawn was money for everyone. Nash would have kept them on the same page.
“Hal Hal” 🤣🤣🤣
Vince was an idiot for not having Bret drop the belt to someone else before Survivor Series, knowing that the personal animosity between those two has reached a boiling point. Even legal documents showed that Bret offered to drop the belt to Austin willingly but not Shawn. Add to that Vince asking Bret to restructure the contract he had just signed less than a year before all this nonsense started.
Ill also echo Cornette when he said "this was a heel program. A bunch of grown men acting like fucking children unable to do business.".
I'm still Team Bret on this. Why was it so necessary to have Shawn win that night? Why couldn't Bret have dropped it to Undertaker or Mankind or Kane? He was only going to lose to Steve at Mania anyway.
