Great episode. I’m doing my PhD on the use of plain language summaries as a way to communicate health research to a lay, non-expert audience because I saw so much misinformation in Facebook groups for people with chronic illness.
I hope your PhD is going well. I think plain language is very important. I'm a teacher/tutor and quite recently I was teaching a 7-yr-old boy violin and when he played many wrong notes over and over he got frustrated but suddenly spoke up to his mother (who was sitting in on the class) and said "Mum, I'm getting my anxiety attack!". He then ran over to her and she gave him his water bottle and gave him a hug and a moment to breathe.... I just thought that *that* was a little bit too much to be coming out of a 7-yr-old's mouth. He'd obviously heard the word elsewhere... and it's also completely normal to be frustrated with a task that you can't quite achieve. Literally everyone goes through these times. To call it "anxiety" though, just straight off the bat. I wasn't completely comfortable with that. Another instance was (just as a little experiment for myself): I put my coffee cup on a table during a lesson and asked my (9-yr-old) student if that was okay and they said 'yeah that's fine'. I then put my cup on the very edge of the table and said "what about if I leave it here?" and they replied, "UGH! NO! That's giving me anxiety, I wont play if you leave it there the whole time!!!". I moved it back of course. I think young children are using this word a little too much and at points when it's totally unnecessary. The world is changing and I'm not liking it.
Ahh now my addiction is complete. 3am a bunch of weed and my favorite people on earth. Jack, Jim, and Kelly. Even Forrest. Try to smile bro it's not illegal.

I’ve had the nettle rash. I grew up living my summers in England and was playing kick ball with the other kids. No one told me. Though I did learn that there’s a leaf near it that helps. I find it a bit unfair because I warned my English family who stayed with us in the states about the goats head prickers. They’re the worst!

I would like to see an episode on Money Laundering. As an AML employee it would be awesome to spread awareness of stuff like how young people are being used as money mules and stuff like that.

Many journalists also report on self-published academic preprints, which have not yet undergone any kind of formal peer review, and are, until peer-reviewed, no more reliable than some idiot ranting on a blog. Dressing it up as a paper doesn't magically bestow any kind of merit upon the findings. This can be especially problematic, as often the initial claims and conclusions are made as fantastical as possible by new researchers and only later dialed back in when it's clear there's insufficient evidence to support them. It's as Jim says, the whole method of reporting on scientific findings needs an overhaul.

This guy thinks the FDA takes too long to approve medicines, AND is pro-medical advertising? I have a feeling this guy is paid by some of these pharmaceutical companies (which is why he gave a word of defense for propaganda). Now, to be clear, I am not saying that my feeling is correct -- just that Jim would be wise to not change his mind so quickly when faced with this one person's opinion. It's noble to change your mind when faced with new information; but be careful that the information is correct (which is an ironic point for this episode).
you could use the last set of encyclopedias to chronicle what the four of you don't know; it would be remarkably incomplete. whatever happened to jokes jim? remember, things that are funny... that you thought of... & told everybody? those were good times
