I agree with you on all points. I own a Tom's Studio fp with a stainless steel flex nib to play around with. For serious copperplate handwriting and calligraphy, I use the traditional tools (oblique pen holder plus one of the amazing nibs in this segment) that give you the ideal angle so writing is more comfortable. - I like being a little old-fashioned 😉
And you’re so right: it is also a question of dedication. No matter how much time I would have left in my life, I will always spend an unlimited amount of it on calligraphy. I regard this slow process as a treat that appeals to the senses. For me, that writing is the most beautiful, contemplative activity. 🥰

I also eyedropper my mag600 - you're right about the ink-capacity on a nib this wet.
I wish Magna Carta had made the black acrylic clear, for a Vaccumatic-like ink-window.

You can get a vintage actual "wet noodle" for much less. A lot less if you don't mind the hunt, or know what sort of thing to look for when it's not expressly stated in a listing. You would even have enough left over for a restored parker vac, and honestly probably some left over. Thanks for the review!

Beautiful! When I saw it on Doodlebud's channel, I was immediately reminded of the celluloid of the Parker Vacumatic. I can imagine that these pens can be temperamental. Thank you so much for the review!

I had the same experience with my Mag 600 burping and blobbing, which was a major disappointment at that price. Worse, I got no response from MagnaCarta at all, until the seller gave me a secret contact to use, and then I was able to get a replacement. The whole process took months. A very foolish part of my brain was thinking that, hey, I see they have an updated version with reportedly a better nib, so maybe, MAYBE, I might think about trying that one and forget the past bad experience. But I see their quality control is no better now. Thanks for all of the details and thoughtful review as always.

  • @kristiw.1823

I've had a nearly year long journey with the original Mag 600, with mixed results. Hubs surprised me with it last Christmas (such splurges would have been unthinkable in our first 2 decades of marriage - heck! The first run of these was less than the 650, but still cost more than my vintage engagement ring did!). But after nearly a year of working with it, I had to sell it. It is a huge pen in my hand and between trying to control the grip on it, plus the very wet-noodle nature of the flex, I could never get it to function like I wanted it to.
Love that you reviewed the newer ones, as I think there is a genuine market for these, and Magna Carta is really the only company doing such nibs. They do have some QC issues that need to be worked out, tho.
On a side note, if you ever come across a stray Waterman Stalwart - either a #2 nib in good shape, or a pen with a proper little bit of flex, I'd be very interested! The little unicorn beauty I bought from you last year, is still my favorite amount of flex, but the tipping is nearly nonexistent now. Tho, after seeing the size comparisons of the Parker Vac with the Mag 650, I might need to do some research to see if they ever made those with semi-flex sorts of nibs.
Thanks for a lovely start to the weekend.

My first experience with a flex nib was from Fountain Pen Revolution. I had read glowing reviews and decided to try it. Talk about gushing and ink spillage!
Then I saw this pen. What a beautiful pen. I marvelled at the stacked acrylic. I have two other pens made in this fashion, the Visconti Wall Street and the Montegrappa Otto Extra and fell in love with the design. When I saw this pen, I wanted to buy it. It was sold out. Now it is back in stock. I asked Tom numerous questions, one being if I could write with this in a normal fashion. He said yes and your demonstration confirmed it. But then you mentioned the gushing and uncontrollable leakage. I thought why would I spend that kind of money for a pen that did the same thing as a pen that cost 10+X less? I am glad to see the nib swap worked and you can indeed write with it at normal speed. Do you think one could grease the nib assembly to seal the assembly in the section as well as greasing the section to the barrel as the idea of eyedropper fill is one that I would do?
Thank you for your excellent review, Doug.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I wouldn’t. I doubt the blobbing came from a poor seal around the nib unit. More likely internal feed issues.

I must have been the other one he was talking about. I got the amber one. Mine leaked all over and there was a big non-shiny spot on the nib. 😭It was my first gold nib. I wasn't confident enough to even fiddle with the nib to try to make it work right. I'd already messed up my little limited edition amethyst Sport nib from Tom on a fingernail buffer. But I could replace the Fine with a Medium for $15. Not the gold one.
When I was trying to decide to replace or return, I came to the same conclusion. For the price, I probably wasn't going to reach for it much for long writing. I'm gathering dip pen supplies now.
I was crushed, but in the end, I didn't need a fountain pen that made me cry. I already have a riding lawnmower that does that when it won't start.

Now that I know it may have just been the one pen I had, if I change my mind, I would get the malachite instead. Maybe I'll let my rewards points with them build up again and cash them in on that. Luckily it's not a limited edition

I'm still looking at vintage flex nibs that they all seem to have a very fine downturn beak and shaving-shaping on the gold material itself, I like my Waterman Junior which has it, where it seems to be flexing effortlessly when I only intend it to, but will write normal with stable soft feeling without pressure, this doesn't have that shape, or other Indian flex nib I own(a kanwrite) which in my experience, it has none of that generous no-flex zone like the vintage Waterman, making the nib unwieldy 'flex or no writing', I think its still a lost art without that

Well, it's kinda cool that Goldspot did a collaboration for what's supposed to be reminiscent of those terrific old stacked material fountain pens, but considering that they had to be tweaked after Doodlebud submitted his evaluation, and then you got a problematic nib, along with the stingy appearance of the gilding on the clip, it speaks ill of the manufacturer or the designer or whatever the q.c. department has been smoking, um, drinking, you get it. Especially at the price Goldspot wants for this big baby, one would want it to work the first time, every time. But you gushed over it nonetheless. Atta boy, Doug! Which reminds me, what progress have you made with the gold nib/not gold nib on the Admok M800? Since mine was not only from a different seller, but a different platform, best guess is the deception was either intentional or the result of another bad translation/cut and paste/or some huge problem in the assembly process. I'm curious, did you use Émeraude de Chivor with that first nib you had burping issues with as well? I have mostly pens that write very wetly, no burping issues, but Émeraude de Chivor sends all the ones with a large ink capacity filling system over the edge. Could that have been the issue with your first nib?
And an unrelated question: If you look very closely at the stacked celluloid on your Vacuumatic versus the stacked acrylic on your MAG 650, do you see any difference in the layering? The old stacked celluloids used to have alternating transparent and pearlescent layers, but there would also be thin strips of black celluloid between those layers to separate them. Do you see that on the MAG 650 as well, or are they just alternating black and pearlescent layers without the boundary strips? Thanks for the review!
