Thank you for posting this! I'm still doing the park and draft method, but this inspired me to pick up my spindle. Because of this I just spent the last hour and a half spinning a nice, even laceweight single for the first time. Yay, I'm finally getting the hang of it!
You all probably dont give a damn but does someone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost the login password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me!
@Maximiliano Kingston i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
it's so cool to see others spin, I've recently gotten into spinning on drop spindles and its so fun. As you said it's very relaxing and I swear I get into a meditation mode when I get going. Thank you for the video :)
Thank you. Just found and started at beginning. Always thought this would be difficult. Went to my first wool festival and can't wait to do all the fun stuff
That was. So cool. I looked this up because I was reading a book that featured spinning and I couldn't picture what it looked like, and I'm so glad I did! I wanna play with ALL the rolags.
Thank you, thank you!! I just bought my 1st drop spindle at SAFF and haven't been brave enough to try it yet! You spin really nice singles!! I think I will need to start with the park and draft method and then maybe move on to the way you are doing it.
Love it, great video and fun to watch and listen. Teach me! I admit I use an electric wheel but I made drop spindles and used them as a kid, really nice to see such interest and an inexpensive way to spin. Most people might be surprised how much you can produce this way. Its not a toy.
Oh!! Saw dropspindles in archeology but couldn't figure out how the finished thread was moved from top to underside of the weight. Reenacters never showed that little bit. Thanks. 🙂
It would be really nice to see how to do the butterfly. Everyone skips over the details of that! Nice video, thank you. The fibres look so glitzy and interesting.
Than you for such a great video! You are very easy to understand and to listen to.I tried several other videos and they were confusing! By the way- the crystal pendant you are wearing caught my eye. Where did you get it? It looks very special.
I need a good tutorial on different types of fiber.. I know that Alpaca is too smooth. You want something that has some tooth to it. there are sooo many types of fiber! and sheep...
Hi Kristin, thank you for the tutorial, I have never had much success with my drop spindle - I prefer to use the wheel but I was wondering if a top whorl or bottom whorl spindle makes a difference also the weight if the spindle, any ideas?
+Emma Brown Hi Emma, So glad you enjoyed the tutorial! I learned to drop spindle using a top whorl, and have yet to try spinning with a bottom whorl ... so I can't really say which one is better to learn on. Though, I've heard some say a top whorl is easier and then some say it really doesn't matter. I would recommend starting out with a spindle that weighs around 1oz, as it's not too heavy and not too light. I would also suggest spinning with lofty fiber such as Polwarth or Corriedale, since I find they're easier to manage than Merino and silk. I hope this helps! :)
I had a top whorl that I never used.. but I heard that a bottom whorl was easier. I did end up buying a Turkish Spindle that was SO much easier to learn on. I have also owned an Ashford Kiwi for years that I have barely used but I am learning to draft on the Turkish spindle. Also, I just bought a super heavy bottom worl that obviously cannot be used for fine yarn! (fiber breaks too much). so that is for a thicker yarn so I would say yes.. weight matters :>) (NOvice here!)
It's a yarn swift! You wrap a hank of yarn around it, and use a ball-winder (the small contraption attached to the opposite end of the desk) to wind it into a ball or "cake", to knit from. As you crank the ball winder's handle, the swift rotates around and around. :)
+Janna Hubbard Hi Janna, Apologies for the late response! Just seeing your comment, now. The sweater in the background is the Waterlily top by Meghan Fernandes :)
I found you by chance (I started at Purple Reign) and now I'm trying to watch the older podcasts. My question is where would one find your podcast notes?
Jose A Morales The general rule is a heavier spindle for thicker yarn and a lighter one for thin yarn or thread. I have a tiny Snyder Turkish spindle that weighs 8 grams and lets me spin really fine thread.
Hi Sarah, to make lace or fingering weight yarn, will depend on how fine you spin your singles. Once you fill the cop, you can unload your singles onto another bobbin, or use an empty spindle to spin another bobbin. Then you can ply together the singles from both bobbins together on the spindle, in the opposite direction. Or, if you just want a single-ply yarn just wind the spun singles onto a niddy-noddy, tie, and soak to set the twist. :)
Great question! Lighter spindles are more ideal for spinning fingering - lace singles, while heavier spindles are more ideal for spinning thicker singles, like worsted and bulky. :)
Thanks Cherie! I purchased it from the Spanish Peacock: www.spanishpeacock.com/catalog/ The best way to hear about shop updates is to follow him on Instagram :)
My spindle stops spinning after 2-3 seconds :( And the "yarn" curling uncotrollably :/ It is so hard, but this video is good. thank you... i wish i could do this so easy.

I've been really interested in seeing a clear video on how this works. Thanks so much!

Yay! I'm so glad you found it helpful ☺️
I agree. I might just try. thanks!
+MaryLee Castillo Me too
Very informative and I TOTALLY want to get my own drop spindle now!
Oh!! Saw dropspindles in archeology but couldn't figure out how the finished thread was moved from top to underside of the weight. Reenacters never showed that little bit. Thanks. 🙂
This video made me want to learn how. I'm currently looking for my first spindle. 🙂

Have you tried or seen silly salmon designs spindles from Etsy? They are excellent. Worth a try!
Thank U. Very good tutorial.
Can you explain how you start off your spinning?
No worries! Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing.
Excellent video! How do keep the spindle turning the right way and draft??
Fan of yours ☺️

You make it look SO easy....maybe I'm starting off with wrong type of fiber for a beginner.

For your lace weight, do you have to do anything else after you spin it before you knit with it?
what is that wooden thing attached to the end of your desk? looks like a foldable clothes line?? Now want to try a drop spindle! great video

Thank you!
Hi can you recommend how I could spin a 100% cotton ball into a 4mm thickness please, by hand I do not have a machine and it is for a small project
Hi I have a question
what is the tool to make fine threads?
Or
Could you use any spinning tool to make fine threads?
Jose A Morales The general rule is a heavier spindle for thicker yarn and a lighter one for thin yarn or thread. I have a tiny Snyder Turkish spindle that weighs 8 grams and lets me spin really fine thread.
Does the type of roving make a difference in how fine you can make your thread? I have tried and it (Romney) just keeps breaking.
How do you make yarn out of this into lace and fingering weight yarn
Hi Sarah, to make lace or fingering weight yarn, will depend on how fine you spin your singles. @@Voolenvine thank you 😊
What does the spindle weight have to do with yarn thickness? I'm new at this.
Great question! Lighter spindles are more ideal for spinning fingering - lace singles, while heavier spindles are more ideal for spinning thicker singles, like worsted and bulky. :)
YarnGasm Podcast how do I know which spindle I have? I just got one.
You almost inspired me to give drop spindling another chance. Almost. #wheelforlife
+The Dyer's Notebook Maybe not this time, Laura ... but I'll find a way! ;)

Thanks Cherie! I purchased it from the Spanish Peacock: www.spanishpeacock.com/catalog/ The best way to hear about shop updates is to follow him on Instagram :)
