    It's pretty clear to me that Bart inherited Mona's criminal mastermind. Some of the pranks he pulls off require more than a fair share of substance.

    No one ever seems to bring up the fact that Bart is also a natural born leader. Seriously the kid has got some mad leadership skills. He orchestrated a massive assault with fellow students to take down Nelson, took over Kamp Krusty, and has taken control of the school several times.

    • @cielo987

      as well as lead the same students to get back Springfield's lemonade tree, managing to get Nelson to not only help but cooperate with Martin Prince and Rod Flanders(who isn't a big fan of Bart and tries to avoid him as much as possible) to join them.

      Not to mention his skill with explosives. He once came up with a plan that would blow up the detention hall, but leave the rest of the school intact, which you have to admit takes some know-how.

    To support Bart being a genius, in one episode he was diagnosed with ADHD. When he took the medication, he apparently acted irrationally paranoid but in the end he was right that the whole town was being spied. He then stopped taking his meds and therefore continued being too easily distracted to show his genius skills

    • @Doctor_Odin
      @Doctor_Odin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      There's plenty of episodes that contradict his ADHD diagnosis. That was mainly written to push the feminist narrative that boys need to be medicated for being boys.

    Hell, you guys forgot right mention Homer solved the God Particle, that's some genius level thinking right there.
    Bart has ADD which makes it difficult for him to concentrate and behave but he's actually wicked smart.
    Maggie is a prodigy, not only does she habitually play classical music on her xylophone but she has also recreated masterpiece artworks on her etch-a-sketch.

      Big O well see it like this if someone is forced into something they will less likely want to do it or even try but if the person wants to do it and puts it on themselves to do it they will try harder look at Bart and school he hates school but in one episode he got extremely interested in chemistry or when he took the test that said he’d be a cop he did better in school and became a better person cause that was a thing that interested him till Lisa blew it for him though shows he’s a good brother as well

    I miss the time when Lisa was _actually_ smart, not just _known_ to be smart. In the first season, she makes a lot of insightful remarks using a remarkable vocabulary. Nowadays her intelligence is assumed rather than demonstrated.

  • @ninja1988able
    @ninja1988able 6 ปีที่แล้ว +147

    Lisa's not that smart. I remember one episode where they put her with children smart as her and she couldn't keep up . Then she chose to go back to Springfield elementary to be a big fish in a small pond . She likes being smarter than whoever she's around as when she's not she gets threatened and jealous.

    • @MrTwentington
      @MrTwentington 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      that was going to the third grade, and in that case it wasn't that everyone was smarter than her as much as she and Bart couldn't coexist there the whole "big fish small pond" bit was just a line to do what the simpsons always does at the end of an episode- put everything back the way it was so it can start all over next week. But you're not completely wrong, Lisa does have a flaw of jealousy which was shown when Maggie's genius shone through or in the crossover episode with Family Guy when Meg proved to be musically talented. While that stayed as a natural character flaw in both cases she does get over it.... eventually. I'm not saying she's not a jealous person, she totally is and there's even several more episodes I can think of that support that- but it is a character flaw they all have flaws however you cannot say that Lisa is not smart just because she gets jealous.

      as mentioned by others he just turned up one day was given a job and no real training as refferenced by the burns buys a university episode where its demonstrated he doesent know anything about nuclear power also supported by the episode where homer stops a simulated meltdown by playing inny miny minie mo both situations wherte he activley monologues how he hasnt got a clue what hes doing

    Both Lisa and Bart would be prodigies if they ever actually focused on anything. I'm not sure if calling Bart lazy would be accurate. It's more that he is very easily distracted and cannot focus. I realize that individual episodes mostly exist in their own universes, but in an episode Homer called Bart hyperactive, and in other episodes there have been implications of ADHD. Bart cannot focus enough to study, watch him try to study in the history episode. Yet he manages to pick up competencies and languages with ease. I have no idea if Bart accurately represents a child with untreated ADHD, but it has been shown that he has difficulty focusing on academic texts. What I'm trying to say is that Bart has a great deal of potential, he just chooses to ignore it or he cannot realize it in his current state. LIsa's genius has always been on display. She can master competencies in a matter of minutes that would take others lifetimes. I cannot believe this, but beyond being academically brilliant she also has a great deal of emotional intelligence. Lisa and Marge are often forced to act as moral and social guides for the family. Oh god, I've just written a paragraph on the SImpsons. I must go and contemplate this in shame.

    • @tacosmexicanstyle7846
      @tacosmexicanstyle7846 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Andrew J
      Lisa is more academically than emotionally intelligent I believe. She often flaunts her academic superiority and isn't very sensitive towards others, acting as though she is the paragon of success amongst a family of idiots. She fails to consider intelligence as a measure of anything beyond academic success and often focuses too much on its indicators (her grades.) she is unable to put her school life into perspective, she melts her brain when unable to process and accept the idea of receiving a B in one case. I would consider that Maggie is more emotionally intelligent because she looks outwards to consider other people's needs instead of striving to dominate them in stubborn argument/competition like Lisa!

      Bart does have ADHD (or something similar) there was an episode were he was diagnosed and treated for it. The funny thing is is in the more modern episodes they tried to say Bart's pranks because of ADHD but in earlier Seasons it showed that he just doesn't care. I hate to say this but largely because of modern feminist politics being shoved in the Simpsons and one of the greatest ones is saying that boys need to be medicated for being boys.

    This idea of these smart members of the Simpsons family choosing lazy, care-free lives over embracing intelligence is very profound. But this also brings greater depth and a feeling of tragedy to this otherwise hilarious and beloved show.
    It makes me wonder how many of us shy from potential and intelligence because we want to remain in our current, comfortable lifestyles.
    “Both tragic and beautiful” is a good way to describe it.

    Yeah I chose the lazy happy path too. As a child, I got top grades without even really trying. I was a teachers pet that pretty much became a substitute teacher since understood things so fast. Show me something once and I could teach it to the other students. Course this led to bullying and being taken advantage of. I went into homeschooling during my high school years and considering lessons were only for a few hours a few times a week, I did other activities in between such as gaming and watching anime. I enjoyed this stuff so much I started to become lazy with my education. My GCSE's were still good, but not as high as I could have gotten.
    I did a couple courses with college and did well, but I hated the stress towards the end of each. It also dug into my enjoyment of life. I have the intelligence to go far, I just don't have the dedication to suffer for so long to get there. I'd rather be happy.

  • @Doctor_Odin

    I do believe the Simpsons are technically geniuses. the only thing with Lisa is her Foolish Pride that make sure the least intelligent member.
    Abe acts like a senile old fool because his high intelligence got him nothing a wife that didn't respect him enough or their child to think of them before being selfish with her criminal activism. Leaving him to deal with the consequences both illegal and the ones involved with homers abandonment issues as well as being a single father during that decade.
    Homer's intelligence partly has to do with the brain damage from the crayon and is on subconscious desire to maintain the childish fool as apart of coping mechanism because of his abandonment issues due to his mothers selfishness.
    Bart's intelligence is shown with his engineering skills where is overly elaborate plans for his pranks which he most likely hides. because only time Marge and Homer ever paid him any attention is when he got in trouble along with the attention he gets from the other students. Most likely a similar abandonment issue but a more childish version for Bart.
    Maggie's intelligence is shown theater her DX Machina abilities which is overlooked mainly because she's a baby.
    Marge is intelligent but what she probably eventually noticed the bigger picture with a lot of the causes is she was fighting for as a teenager weren't really going anywhere. And with homers influence learn to enjoy the simple things in life. while still being able to see their connection to the bigger picture.
    Lisa takes after her grandmother Mona with a high amount Foolish Pride and selfishness. With her constant belittling of her family members and their choice to enjoy simpler things. As well as trying to assert her academic record as a sign of maturity and force her way into more High Society areas. Unwilling to see the wisdom and her family's actions. that in the end academic intelligence does not go far in life. that sooner or later all that hard work will come crashing down in your face was very little to show for it. Most likely dying alone either in a gutter or in a nursing home if you're lucky.

      Agreed there was even an episode that showed Bart having an extremely high aptitude for Chemistry beyond anything Lisa has ever shown. And I agree he was often neglected or rather seen as the problem child at an early age while lisa was the favorite garnering all of the praise. I don't if it is confirmed or not but I am pretty sure he probably has ADHD as well.

      I mean intelligence is great and all but devoting your life to being smart and successful will never make your life as happy as devoting your life to happiness. You should still try to be smart and successful but only as a means to an end for happiness, causing many geniuses to do the bare minimum work they need to make the money to do the things they want to do and they often take poorer paying jobs they enjoy more over jobs with better pay or a more significant impact on human advancement.

    I think Bart is more street-smart than school-smart but only sees school-smart as being valued and the other option taking after Homer, so doesn't focus his skills. And in a few episodes it was suggested Bart had ADHD, which would distract him from staying focused... And Marge was smart at school but stopped challenging her brain so much after marrying Homer and having kids, which obviously wouldn't help anyone get smarter. And maybe Maggie is mute or has another speech issue that wouldn't necessarily affect her intelligence...

    the Simpsons are smart but Springfield isn't. I didn't fully understand everything Lisa was saying to her references and even vocabulary until I was 15 and she's 8. She's proven to be smarter than college students, arrange poetry in a way that impresses some of the best contemporary American authors and is a member of Mensa. I love your thoughts on how Homer still manages to do some genius things even with his genius cut off. Bart to me reminds me more of his grandfather in that he is a hellraiser, he does have a mind for strategy and he just uses it for fun. Like when Bart and Lisa are both in 3rd grade together he gets higher scores on tests because he already did it once but his memory retention kept the mark scheme, I don't know many 10 year olds who could do that. But then Maggie is clearly the most intelligent Simpson having both the hellraising qualities and strategy and musical ability that the others display and Marge's skills with construction and architecture and art. But I wouldn't be so quick to write Lisa off as a fool for taking pride in her brilliance. She finds genuine joy and happiness in what she does, and she does it even knowing that she gets ostracized she states numerous times that it can be lonely doing what she does and is aware that no one presents her with an academic challenge but she does it her way anyway. I think there's something beautiful and admirable in the rest of the family choosing happiness in laziness but I think there's something quite noble that Lisa finds her happiness fully aware of the consequences.

      While we generally see a pet as a part of the family, a pet is never actually a family member. It's not married to them, its not birthed by any of them, nor a parent of any of them. It is in fact the wrong species to be a family member. Sorry, I will go be obvious somewhere else now.
      - And while we say we adopt animals, you are its keeper, not its mom or dad ( even if you think you are ).

    • @adambartlett114
      @adambartlett114 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, (Do Not Misunderstand Me) but torbk is 100% correct though could be a bit more diplomatic. It has nothing to do with how much you love them (or perhaps exactly why); dogs are not humans & putting such on their shoulders is wholly unfair to the dog, a dog who may have been the greatest dog but instead fails at the impossible.
      You will be hard pressed to find someone who loves dogs more than I (I’ve chosen to be paired with dogs 24/7/365 for decades), I believe that dogs are the most closely linked species to humans & for as long as humans have been humans, dogs have been with us. My life has been saved literally countless times by my dog being himself & I believe that dogs can be taught to understand/communicate with us but still, lassie is not real & it’s cruel to expect any dog to be a lassie.
      It’s the same way that it is very bad bad to carry any dog around (apart from legit health issues), ALL dogs NEED to walk on their own 4 paws all the time. Indeed, it’s been shown the quickest way to get bit is to be in the dogs face that is being kept off their paws & ground, except maybe picking same dog up. It’s literally a recipe for disaster & certainly a horror to the dog. To say nothing of the damage to the dogs health!
      It’s very important to understand the difference between a dog being a member of your family unit & a dog actually being “family members”. I love my dogs with all my being but if 1 of them ever was say attacking another person (without appropriate justification), I will be the 1st to be doing whatever is needed to stop them, even hurting or killing them (if needed to stop them ). I would do that for a general adult, much moreso a kid or loved 1. Reality is I have massive powerful dogs that can be over 200lbs solid muscle; they can easily kill a capable adult or amputate limb or other very serious injuries. My current baby can chomp straight through any bone in any animal under 500lbs, he chews through frozen pig legs with ease.
      Obviously, it’s my job as the human to maintain control of them & to properly train them to not be dangerous. It’s like its equally my job to protect my dogs from any one or thing that will harm them. I don’t care if I have to seriously injure or even kill (if needed) any that tries to harm them. So I carry a couple pepper sprays, bear bangers, extendable baton, knives, leashes, etc. on my person to enable me to protect my dogs from any that try to harm them.
      I may be wrong but I think that this is what torbk is trying to say... not that they don’t love & appreciate dogs...
      Adam
      P.S. look for trainers that understand this & the need for a balanced approach... it’s beautiful what a good trainer can do with this & patience!

    I don’t think choosing to embrace her intelligence makes Lisa unhappier, I think that she’s different from the rest of the Simpsons in that embracing her intelligence and openly using it for the benefit of the world is what makes her happy. Unlike Homer and Bart, she has strong ideals, and it would be harder on her to not act on them.
    And I also think that being silent isn’t Maggie being lazy, she just chooses to reserve her genius because she can get away with more that way! She’s really really underappreciated and she oftentimes seems to take advantage of that! (She’s my favorite character 😊)
