  • Thinking about a job in construction? Here’s how I became a construction estimator.
    Like I mentioned in a video, this might be one of a little series I’ll do explaining how I got the job and how I can help you to do the same.
    There’s a lot of opportunity out there for estimating but it’s not a job a lot of people talk about.
    Construction management is the spot everybody is after but not everybody may be cut out for it.
    Plus, with everyone wanting to be project managers, that leaves a lot of estimator positions unfilled.
    I hope this videos help you out with your estimating career. Please ask me any questions you have!

    I'm starting as an assistant estimator for the first time on Monday after being a dispatcher here for some years. Don't know what to expect but I'm excited.

    I became an estimator by lying to my first employer by saying i worked at a company that i only interviewed at. F them for not hiring me. Later on i learned on the first job. And when i got laid off during covid, i lied again and found another job claiming i still worked there. And after that i still lie to this day as needed to survive lol.

    Hey, In the next video could you tell what software or program did u use to for project estimates ? I’m done with 4yr college in civil engineering and post graduate in construction project management. I want to start my career as an estimator. Would Reaching out directly to subcontractors or general contractors help? Coz I haven’t got any experience in estimating. But I know a little on how to read plans.

      Blue Beam Revu

    • @unpolishedman
      @unpolishedman  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a good idea! I’ve been out of my rhythm making videos so I’ll have to see if I can back on track. The above comment mentioned bluebeam which I have used in the past and most companies use that. Another one is planswift or onscreen takeoff. Other than those, you’re using excel and Microsoft project for everything else in the GC world. Other trades might have some different programs that make their work easier.

    Hey man I really liked your video! I wanted to ask you a question, what advice or tips do have for starting estimators? Im asking because I got my associates degree in construction management in 2021 and started my first job in construction as a Assistant Superintendent for a GC and I have worked for them for 1 year now. But I have always wanted to do estimating as my career. A chance opened up for me for a entry level estimator at a smaller GC company. So I wanted see what advice do you have or any heads up what to expect starting off.
    Sorry for the long read 😅, thanks if you reply to my question.

      Get on linked in and start networking. Its who you know then can your foot in the door. Get in where you can and as soon as a position opens up let people know you want it.

    • @unpolishedman
      @unpolishedman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for getting back to your question late! Did you end up taking the gig? I would say if estimating is what you want to do, then I would go after it. Starting at a smaller GC would not only be a good starting point but you can avoid a lot of the typical big company office BS that no one likes. Smaller companies seem to be the ones that are the most fun to work for. If you don’t want to work at the GC level yet, I’d reach out to local trades that you like and see if they need help. The above comment mentioning LinkedIn is a good idea as well.

      Grab a book called the National Construction Estimator. There is a 2023 version and will break down all the cost.

    I have been doing material takeoffs using planswift for a plastering contractor in Melbourne as a freelancer for 4 years. Currently, I am working as a contract administrator at a Dam project worth $4.2 Billion USD since 1.5 years. How would you rate my profile to start estimating again in Australia. I have just came to Australia on Temporary work visa. Your words can mean a lot.

    Hey my school does certification for construction management about a year, it says we can find employment as estimators. Is 1 year enough

    • @unpolishedman
      @unpolishedman  ปีที่แล้ว

      One year could possibly be enough for a junior estimating position but more will be needed for say an estimator 1 position and beyond.

    How much do you charge per estimate? Is it per hour? Per SF of the project or per percentage of the total of the estimation ??
    Please

      Do you like details and problem solving? If you do, then I’d say yes it is. More experience means more dollars and estimators are needed everywhere right now.
