I'm actually surprised nobody's talking about the continuation of the Byzantine successor states. Both epirus, trebizond, including nicae tried to survive or if not, reform the fragments of the former eastern roman empire!

Also don't forget Theodoro, it used to belong to the Crimean Goths, until they were payed by the Eastern Roman Empire, and so they became part of the Empire, also even the Anglo-Saxons who fled from the Normans were given land in Crimea, and they named it "Nova Anglia",
      and survived until 1475

Because of the battle of Manzikert in 1071, and the fourth Crusade of 1204, it split Byzantium, and it didn't have any competent leaders, and also I think Byzantium could have been in a better state if the Komnenos dynasty managed to return to the throne and reconquer what was lost from the crusaders and Angeloi and Laskaris, and since Trebizond got richer from the silk trade, while having good or decent relations with Georgia, it could have a good army with Cuman-Kipchak horse archers and maybe Georgian auxiliaries
And also the same could have happened with Theodoro against the Crimean Tatars

The Toparchy of Maina which was a military district of Morea never fell to the Ottoman Turks. Many officials fled to Mani when Constantinople and Morea fell and continued a sort of government in exile.

As someone from Trebizond, I must say that there is a huge misunderstanding about the history, and the current situation of Trebizond. First, the people in Trebizond, which is Trabzon with the modern name, are not Laz. The Laz people are living in Rize, Artvin and the country of Georgia. The people in Trebizond is either Greek, or Turkish. However, we can't exactly know what people are which because there are plenty of speculations about that. If someone runs a DNA Test in Trebizond, they will probably be seen as Greek, but this is almost true for anyone in the West side of Türkiye. Anyone in Türkiye has Greek gene in their blood. But what is different about the people in Trebizond, they are more likely to have this percentage of having Greek gene. There are still people in Trebizond speaking Old Greek about 4000. They are certainly Greek, but we don't know the people about don't speak that language. Trebizond Empire is the last Greek Empire, and many people see it as the third Rome. Today, the people in Trebizond, even if they speak only Turkish, live with the culture of Greek. They still play Kemencha, which is a instrument belongs to the Greek, and plays Horon, which is a kind of folk dance also belongs to Greek. I can answer the questions about Trebizond you wonder, I would be appreciated 👍🏻 have a nice day everyone..

I like Trebizond history, did a tweet on founder David a couple hours ago. Trebizond, part of the Roman Empire.
A lot of unfortunate pronounciations in the video. Despite that I enjoyed watching it.

People of modern Trebizond are Romans, and every single one of them is aware that their proper ethnicity is "Roman" and many of them still speak Romeyka which is Pontic Greek.
Turk is like American, just invented nation with Turanic culture, but they are not Turkic people just like French Speaking people of Algiers aren't Frankish Germanic in origin.
I've talked with guy from Trebizond and he told me that Turks are Romans, all of them with few exceptions here and there.

@@arandomdude9982 Romans are human beings not culture or language. Romans are a group of inter-ethnic tribes that descended from Anatolian and Balkan ancestors.
You can not become Roman by learning their language or culture.
Culture has nothing to do with Roman people as they have evolved just like any other people on earth.
