    let me start by saying I've been trapping and putting furs up for over 40 years now and I must say you have some great techniques that I would never have thought of. like pushing the carcass inside out that is absolutely brilliant I've almost always have the belly tear open when pulling the hide down this is a cleaner way of doing it, cutting the front paws off never thought of that I always cut around the ankles then pulled the hide down, the tape on the long zip tie that's awesome, and the head in the bolts that looks a lot more comfortable then the old time hanging method that I was thought it has to be easier on the arms. just wish the fur price's were what they were 30 years ago a trapper use to be able to make some great money if he invested his time not today its just a hobby now.
    Thanks for the great info and techniques.

      I found a possum in the backyard that my dog killed and when I skinned it i found out that it had a bunch of white spots on it and when I searched up what that might be I ran across bovine tuberculosis. So im not sure if thats something I should be handling but this was my first attempt at skinning an animal and that freaked me out. Do you think I should be worried? have you seen anything like this before ?

    • @craigtimmons3468
      @craigtimmons3468 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fadynaser3408 Congrats for trying something new especially skinning an animal which can be very tedious around the eyes and mouth.
      I have seen TB in wild animals before and with all the diseases there are today I ware rubber/latex gloves.
      Its hard for me to tell if its Bovine TB by just a description, it very well could be TB especially if the white spots are on the internal organs like the liver or lungs.
      The infection is usually gotten by eating or drinking unpasteurized dairy products or having direct contact though an open wound while hunting or slaughtering an infected animal, Symptoms include severe cough, fever, weight loss, chest pain.
      I would watch for these symptoms in both yourself and your dog or if you have any suspicion that you could be infected go see a doctor.

    Use to trap when I was kid back in the 70's. Wish these videos were around back then. Had books but no mentor. First catch when I moved to Ontario was a nice mink. My dad found a nice guy to come over and help us out. Great guy. Got to talking afterwards and turns out he was also the local game warden.

    Nice video. I prefer wire stretchers, but that's just personal choice. I take my time skinning and handling as well. You'll get more for 50 well handled rats than 100 poorly handled. And it's a pride thing. If you're gonna take an animal be respectful and do the best job possible.

    I'm disturbed, and I don't know how I got here... But I'm not really against this considering I caught a massive snapping turtle when I was around 11. Ate him the next day =P
    But more because it would be a waste not to use up every bit of usable part of an animal for reasons known.

    40 years ago to flesh a rat, we took the rat ,fur side out, stuck his nose in a hand crank washing machine ringer and squeezed the fat out the back end. Most trapping outlets carried them. Does anyone do that any more?

    Don't know if you will see this, but I have a question. Your initial cut is from the tail to the foot. I have seen some guys go from the foot to the vent. Is there any advantage or disadvantage cutting to the vent? When I leave the vent it is hard to clean when fleshing. Any suggestions? Also do you know what would constitute Slight damage? I want to send the best I have any any suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated. By the way I love your videos, keep them coming.

    • @tommyschlegel5653
      @tommyschlegel5653 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Muskrat hides dry fairly fast depending on the conditions. Wire stretchers are much better for rats than boards. Better air circulation. Let em dry for a week then release them from the stretcher to keep the fur from being stuck to the stretcher causing potential damage.
