  • This match is remembered because Chelsea fans were supposed to be banned after causing trouble everywhere they went this 1977 season in Division 2 (now the championship). The promotion party turned into a full scale riot and we have the stories from the people involved in the events of the day.
5,000 Chelsea fans including some of the notorious Chelsea headhunters invade Molineux for a promotion decider.

I'm Chelsea and was at Molineux that day but some of the comments here from other Chelsea fans embarrass me... It may have been over 40 years ago, but Chelsea did not "batter Wolves" this makes Chelsea sound like West Ham and their "30 Years Undefeated" nonsense. Every firm has been turned over and its no shame to admit it. Wolves away in the 70's could be a very scary experience and Chelsea held their own until the police intervened but those days are long gone and Wolves were always game and definitely deserve more credit!

We went up there in the back of a hire van with 20 others meeting at Ealing Broadway station. All had tickets in the Wolves end as CFC were not meant to have any. Throughout the first half we were surrounded by old bill while Wolves fans kept singing “you will die” over and over again. We got escorted up the CFC end at halftime. Went on the pitch at the end and the majority were all well behaved.
The team that came up third was Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest and look what they did the following three seasons......

There was 111 arrests at this game, pretty evenly split between both clubs. Depending on which side you were it probably felt like you were the main aggressors. No doubt about it, Chelsea were crazy but Wolves had a right go and no one really won the day.
Leeds at Molineux that year in the FA Cup QF in front of 50,000 was another crazy day with 79 arrests. Forest game also mad. All 3 games involved two sets of fans having a right go at each other.

Just remember Wolves singing "we all agree Wolves and Chelsea are magic".
Arselicking trying to save a kicking, this fan lies, Wolves got battered everywhere.

They certainly didn't get battered, neither did Chelsea - it was even-stevens, no one really budged on the South Bank and outside it was also fairly even.

Mate, no one saying Wolves good away from the midlands at least, but for a relatively small town/city they were no pushovers at Molineux as many clubs found out

I went to most away games back in the day, if you say wolves fans were up for it you must have been at a different game, we went up there on a Friday night and Chelsea fans were everywhere. As a wolves fan saying it was evens, we know what that really means😂,KTBFFH.

You'd think they would have taken the South Bank with Chelsea fans everywhere and only one set of lads up for it (:-

If I remember right, after the match, both teams appeared in the directors box to celebrate being champs and promotion. When does that ever happen? A mad day all round. This was the first of two away fan bans, the other in 81/82 and neither of them worked.
